I have had my R3 for quite awhile now and I loved this little unit, but to my surprise it is not working. The issue I have is the unit appears to be working, but does not alert to anything. By this I mean GPS, voltage, display, and outside appearances work, but it will not alert to anything (Laser, X, K, KA). I've done a factory reset, tested a different power adapter, and even did a firmware update with factory reset to no resolve.

Has anyone had such issues? At this point do I buy a new unit (R7) and have same issues??

I don't know I got mine off Amazon and I got the 3-year free replacement for like an extra twenty bucks so I I'm glad I got that I guess it just in case

Yes, a few of us have had this issue or similar - it is not widespread by any means but enough are out there. Uniden does have good CS so they should be able to help you out in a repair. If you want the R7 have the R3 repaired and sell it (the repair will cost a lot less than what you will sell it for)...or just keep the new unit.

I would fathom to guess they would send you a refurbished one. Their customer service is really good. I bought mine a year and a half ago from BRD. Their customer service is very good too.

Warranty support is really easy and much cheaper than popping for a new unit. A new unit even as cheap as you can find is still going to cost more than double to replace versus sending yours to Uniden for repairs or replacement.

And the R7 is a bad dude. But yes, built by the same company with a lot of the same parts.

My R3 literally went up in smoke last week and was behaving the same as yours afterward. After the smoke cleared and I restarted it, everything appeared to be fine, but I had no alerts of any kind during a 5 hour highway drive, and no response to some known K band sources in town.

Uniden customer service was great, and it's on its way to Texas right now for a post mortem. I'll post the rest of the story when I hear back from them.

I would love to know what burned up enough to cause smoke. I think you might have gotten away lucky that it was just smoke and didn't burn into flames..

Yea, let us know what if anything, Uniden says..

Will do. I was stunned for a moment by the fairly heavy smoke that started coming out of the perforations in the bottom of the case, especially because I have it mounted almost in contact with the dash of a brand new company vehicle. My first reaction was to get it off the sticky mount and unplug it. When I squeezed the tab on the connector and pulled it out, the tab immediately fell off and dropped somewhere down the side of the seat. I haven't located it yet.

A sniff test confirmed something fried internally, but I wanted to confirm the severity by plugging it back in. Surprisingly, the R3 powered up normally, even running through the "self test" successfully. I was able to get the connector to stay in without the locking tab and decided to drive off, ready to grab and toss it--in flames--- out the window. It stayed powered on, reliably reporting m.p.h., for 5 hours through Ohio and into west Michigan, but never once sounded an alert of any kind. I was even running X. Back in town, I drove by several known K sources and the R3 was quiet there, too.

I bought the unit new and have never had an issue since the purchase in May of 2017. I recently updated to 1.50, but I don't think this problem is related to the firmware.

The detector and power supply should be in Texas this week, and CS directed it to a gentleman named Kubo for examination. We will see...
