Hey Guys,
After a little over a year of owning my R3, bought new from Amazon, I have run into a serious technical issue with it.

A few days ago, I turned on my car and my R3 went directly to a false laser alert that stayed on during the entire drive of about 40 minutes. This was a warm, sunny day, but not too hot (about 80 deg). The next day, it happened again. This time I unplugged it and did some searching around online. I plugged it back in with the intent of doing a factory reset, but it turned off just after plugging it in and it would not come back on.

I checked all fuses and found no issues. I noticed that the LED on the power cord lights up orange while pressing the power button. I also tried updating the firmware, but my computer will not recognize it when connecting with USB cable.

Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated. I am very disappointed that it has completely died after spending so much money on it just over a year ago.

Thanks in advance!

Might try a different USB cable, if you are not already using the one that comes with it. If you can get it to talk, try an upgrade/reflash; might require a recovery reflash.

Otherwise, it sounds D-E-D. Personally I don’t think the Unidens are built to last very long at all.

But Uniden support is pretty easy, just call the number and send in in (around $100 since you are out of warranty). Or if you got the protection plan from a major vendor pull your card. Warranty process took me around 2-3 weeks to get my R1 serviced (replaced).

Sorry about your luck.

Could be a physical logic circuit that failed in the detector? If you can't get it warrantied it would be cool to open it up. Usually the warranty process is a bit easier in the US compared to Canada.

I don't even know which USB cable came with it, but the one I used works with my external hard drive so I know that there is nothing wrong with it.

No, I didn't turn off laser before it died. I was going to factory reset and update firmware before it happened but it died before I got the chance.

I think it might be physical circuit damage. I will call them Monday and see if they can help me out as im only about 2 months out of warranty and, frankly, its BS that I have a completely dead unit.

Thanks for the help everyone!

I actually had an issue with USB cables. They are not all pinned out the same. I was updating my Pro M for redlight database, and updating my R1 for version 1.50 and had to try a few cables before it worked. Then what worked on my detectors would not work when I hooked up a GPS to update the maps.

And Uniden support here is not the same person anymore. I think the lights are on and nobody is home these days. If you can’t fix it yourself you are probably going to have to call the corp hotline.
