Hey all, just bought an R7 recently and basically am wondering why MI State Police in the Detroit area are not detected on my radar at all. Usually they are sitting on the median so maybe that is why because they aren't driving around? IDK

I thought it was a fluke at first but I've driven past 5 or so of them now on my normal route and the detector just acts like they are invincible. I am running 2/5/6/8, Ka narrow, and all of the other recommended settings from Vortex

Not sure what's going on. Any help is appreciated.

they may be running instant on radar or laser.

only way to find out is if someone shoots you with radar to find out .

Either they are not transmitting radar or they are using laser. It is common for State LEOs to just sit in the median with radar off. They are probably doing paperwork and their presence slows traffic down. LEOs using laser will usually have the windows open and you will see them aiming a device at you and/or other drivers. Radar detectors are not particularly adept at detecting laser. If you have K band enabled you should be getting K band alerts from BSMs, door openers etc. Please keep us posted.

Not every police car you see is running radar.. I pass them all the time. If you didn't have a bad ass radar detector on board and noticed a police car wouldn't you slow down? Most people don't have a radar detector and do slow down.. If your picking up any detection at all (K band) its working fine..

Only time I see MSP running c/o is at night.Other times they're selective on targets.

Unlikely you got a defective unit.

Try reflashing (updating), then perform a factory reset, then try your settings again. Verify your bands (x,k,ka,laser) are enabled. Also, pretty sure you are either segged or narrow, not both. I would recommend running narrow until you know your local frequencies, then segment down what you can. Possible you need segment 4, but I didn’t take the time to verify your known local frequencies.

Go test with a grocery store or with a forum member near you. Heck find a police station or two and go make the block, something is bound to light you up.

A lot of times they just sit there. If they are cross wise they're probably not in radar mode or are using laser, however laser is sparse in most Michigan areas.

Yes I get K and X band alerts all the time driving around by grocery stores, industrial business areas, and driving in general. The R7 has saved me a couple times already with accurate Ka band alerts so I know the device is working (thank god, was hoping I wouldn't get a defective unit before buying), the only thing is just with the State police (Local PD I usually always catch). For sure will keep you guys posted, thanks for the help!

Yup I pick up K and X frequently, and I have had a local LEO drive perpendicular in front of me at an intersection and it didn't go off at all so he must have not been running radar.. And of course I would haha, the reason why I bought this to begin with is because of a speeding ticket in which I have a court date in a couple weeks for. Was going a healthy amount over 70 so hoping for the best.

I have updated my R7 to the 124.124.111 (most recent) firmware update and did a factory reset after. I know it is working for sure, but run segmentation normally 2/5/6/8 which I got from here:

Thanks for the reply :) Will update you guys for sure on how everything works for me. Will probably post my R7 settings in this thread sometime this weekend.

Great information, thank you. Love Vortex's channel, he is doing God's work.

Good to know fellow Michigander! Thanks for the reply! :p

So, based on the RDF Geographic Survey, Detroit (Wayne County) runs QT, I/O, K and Ka.

I got this from another site, but here is the gist of it:

"QT, or I/O, according to the chatter, is when an officer using non-MPH radar places the radar on standby (called RF Hold in the trade) and not transmitting, and then transmits in similarly short bursts. The result is the same—no warning."

Hope that helps a little.

In the information I have, they do not run laser. However I would not count that out since I do not know how long ago it was updated. So as you pass them, see if the are using laser.

I live in SE Michigan. I get hit with State Police radars off and on. My R7 is wonderful. Many times the Troopers aren't running radar. Just sitting there and doing paperwork. Just seeing them slows most people down. Michigan uses Ka, and K 99.999% of the time. A few X off and on too.

I thought the same thing when I bought my R3 here in Ohio. Every sheriff or local Leo I passed has his off. They tend to only have them on when they’re really looking to nag someone. The rest of the time they’re usually on I/O
