The force of an object in motion from rapid deceleration is much greater than most people think. People have been killed by tennis balls and even stuffed animal beany babys coming off the rear deck lid (though umbrellas are the number one rear deck lid killer). The stuffed animal had enough force and momentum while hitting the victim in the neck just as snap back started and those to forces together in opposite directions of each other cased the neck to damage the spinal cord killing the victim. The ME said the victim would have survived a normal snap back but the opposing force of the stuffed animal caused the fatal injury.
The safe thing, don't use ones read deck lid for storage of anything.
