What happened to the feature allowing you to edit your own posts? Was there earlier this morning but now is no longer visible.

Hmmm. I just posted a reply in a topic 5 minutes ago and I can still edit it. I can't edit a post from earlier in that same thread though. I'm glad I can edit a recent post at least. I sometimes really mess up on typing and need to edit after posting!

Yep, there are certain time limits in place for the moment due to a mass editing issue (and replacing content with "."). This will not be something implemented permanently.

Got it. I was starting to wonder if it had always been that way since a lot of forums are set up with a similar limit.

I wasn't deleting any of my posts but to be honest I can't even say I'm surprised. You threatened to monetize and censor the forum. What did you expect would happen? Maybe you should address that and people might not be so quick to delete their posts.

I'm not sure how preventing edits temporarily for posts older than 24 hours is censorship, but anyway.

If you want to contribute to this forum in a respectful manner then by all means do so, but we're done with the accusations and trying to move this forum forward in all aspects - if you cannot get behind that then please reconsider posting in the future.

No one was accusing you of editing posts? But there are clearly people out there that are deliberately attempting to disrupt the form and flow of conversations.

No, thank you. Please see my previous post about moving this forum forward and not backward.

I would like everyone to know that I what I am about to say I am saying with 100% respect here and have no intention to cause grief to anyone.

The whole decision to deny people the ability to edit their posts, even if only temporarily, really upset me. I have no intention of editing my own stuff and I do well recognize that my contributions here are now the property of RDF. This is not a clause specific to this place but also to all of social media of course.

That said, I have and had no intention to mass edit/delete my posts, but part of moving forward is to have trust in the members that you serve. This means that if you are confident about your positions and your own leadership abilities that you leave people with the right to do with what they want with their content.

I understand the position on both sides, but I guess I just found the removal to edit one's own posts to be pretty disrespectful to me/petty and a sign that there is a clear breakdown of trust even as those remaining are trying to move forward.

I truly wish everyone the best of luck!

You can find “disrespect” anywhere, anytime if you are actively looking for it. Most of us honestly just want to get back to a place where this site is about CM’s and not the other drama. I am sorry if you decide to leave, I wish everyone would stay and talk about CM’s because that is what drives the site and that is what drives people to the site. I won’t say much more, I don’t want to inflame anyone and I am weary and confused by being accused of trying to buy my way into something here because I support the current staff and the board. I apologize to everyone for anything that I said if it upset you. Again, I’d love for EVERYONE to stay here AND talk about all the great CM issues and products. The drama is blocking that and I support whatever the current staff feels they need to do to get us back to that and to that alone.

And that is the last from me on the drama. I too will move forward to the CM threads and posts.

Any timeline you care to share?

My videos and testing results in the testing section are mine to share with the community. I would appreciate them to be unlocked for editing to add content or change things as they come relevant as I see fit when I see fit.

So, once again I ask, respectfully on a timeline.

No there is no timeline for this.

Being unable to edit my threads in the classifieds is seriously not cool.

Honestly I find the idea of edits with no time limits strange at the least, in any media where more than one person is present and/or the author is not also a moderator for the thread.

In most forums I've seen, there are quite draconian editing restrictions, usually up to around five to ten minutes after posting, IF there are no further posts after. In many cases - with a limited authorized amount of individual edits even within the time limits.

And immediate lock of the post if there's another post after it. This is the standard.

Without that, any two bit troll can rip a huge smelly one, gather appropriate responses down the line, then edit the original post to something completely innocent, letting the responses below make their authors look like the jerks in the story.

Affirmations in an original posting can be edited out, leaving the argumentations following them moot, or better - sabotaging them.

Editing a post AFTER there have been posts following it is like editing a printed newspaper after it has been read.

It surely helps being able to edit posts in classifieds, but even for that in most forums there will be simply bumps down the line with "Item X: Sold", "Item Y: Sold" by the seller, and a moderator coming to clean up and consolidate the original post from time to time.

Even Ebay doesn't allow editing the description of an item after a certain time. It allows additions to the description, yes.

A system of unlimited edits would require an army of benevolent, good minded, honest and self controlling thread/post owners, and still an army of moderators just in case.

Cheers

PS: I edited this post a gazillion times :)
PPS: I edited the PS as well
PSS: I am also adding a Post Scriptum Scriptum to my Post Post Scriptum :quagmire:

Ok. Let me know when it’s back then.
All set! Edit ability reactivated.

You make a lot of good points, I think a lot of our members have forgotten how good they've really had it in terms of this kind of stuff.

Which is really dumb, and I'll give you an example why. Here is one of my posts: Hit A Ladder - Late Waze Alert

Note the date of original post, and note the date of last edit. What happened? Well, take a look at this other one (I'm deliberately NOT going to edit it so you can see the problem):
Running A Red Light Intentionally (Santa Clara sucks)

See, ALL of the old video links are broken like this. When I come across one of my old posts in which the link is broken, I'll typically edit it so that the video works again. Which may be many years after originally making the post. The same thing can happen with web links that go stale and must be pointed somewhere else.

I am no reference, I'm toxic :)
I was one of the supermods/admins of a (foreign) 150000+ users forum with solid semi-pro Russian troll presence and a Politics section which had become the main pivot of said forum, and from the crosshairs of the industrial strength fire hose, padlock and chains that had to be my main moderating instruments the tools available in this here forum are deliciously sweet :)
