I've had 2 R3's since Day One and the single suction cup has performed flawless sans over 100° it would sometimes fall but even that was rare

I screw it down just enough where it won't move and about 1/16th more has worked like lucky charms

But I've had 3 units mid ws and they are breaking after about 9 months of use and I'm not switching between cars
I would go so far as to call it a defect and how much extra cost would be involved to get a metal nut
The separation is the same it splits right at the top of the nut seam and unless you have a gracious friend you're stuck buying the whole sticky cup

I used gorilla glue and cut right through
I'm considering epoxy of some sort

Thanks guys for any helpful input

I ditched the uniden suction cup mounts for a permanent windshield mount off eBay for like $8. It works great, and fuck spending a fortune just to mount it.

As a side note the ball joints on the uniden stick suction mounts are a standard size, same as Garmin and many cell phone mounts... I swapped over to using an arkon sticky cell mount and just used the bracket that attaches to the detector the rest is the arkon mount and I have yet to have much fo issues... We have like 6 of them between cars and they are pretty solid. Its a little bulkier but if you are mounting behind the mirror it's not a big deal, it's way more flexible if you have odd angled windows too. Also they have a two year warranty on the mounts : https://www.amazon.com/Arkon-Holder-iPhone-Galaxy-Retail/dp/B00I58VAZS/ref=mp_s_a_1_7?keywords=arkon+sticky+cell+mount&qid=1564868758&s=gateway&sr=8-7

I have a couple of them, brand new ones that I'll never use. I went to the Ebay tape mounts a long time ago for my R1's and Redline and they are bulletproof! If you want it I know I have at least one if not 2 brand new suction cup mounts that I don't need that I'd be glad to send to you for free if you'll PM me and give me your address.

That's really nice of you
Another member sent me one just a month ago and it broke
I'd much more like to get the bottom of this than take freebies
But in this case
I will

Any of them like this. They're all around $8 and I have one in 3 different vehicles. Mine had fallen off the glass once in the heat, but I had already removed and moved it once, replacing the mounting tape. Never had an issue with the included tape.

If you clean the windshield really good with alcohol and press it very hard and then let the mount set for 12 hours or so you'll almost have to break the windshield to pry them back off! And that's in NC heat! I've run them for years and will never run anything else! Just make damn sure you really want them where you mount them, cause it sucks having to move them if you install them right!

I tried the Garmin mount and it immediately fell off the windshield. It didn't work all that great for the Garmin either lol. Must have come from a batch where the suction cups did not stick as well. I know it has worked well for many others. That is my biggest complaint about the Uniden RDs is the mediocre mounting hardware. If that's all I have to complain about that is a good thing!

@Kennyc56 it is good to see that the permanent mount is back on ebay. I have one of those just did not get around to installing it yet. The single sticky cup works well and the nut hasn't failed (yet). I'll have to watch out for that. I have the dual suction mount cup as a backup.

They can be removed with a heat gun (WAY hotter than the sun though) and some elbow grease followed by cleanup with alcohol and a microfiber towel.

That said, I don't recommend removal if you can avoid it.

I've had pretty good luck with a thin plastic spatula we got from Home Depot, then I use my bench grinder wire wheel to grind the old tape off. Then I use a lot of alcohol to get every ounce of it off the mount. Gorilla 2 sided 30 lb. tape works great if you want to re-use the bracket.

I have a roll of 3m mounting tape in my truck that I used because I already had it. Redid it after it fell off, and it's been good through many hot days. Probably just hadn't cleaned it well enough.

I have used the big suction cup since R3 release. Mine died the same thing about a month ago. I went to tighten it and the ring said "See ya!" I still had brand new one from my R1, so I'm back in business........until it breaks! lol

I don't suppose there is any source where we can get a replacement nut? Uniden??? This mount sticks really well in the hot weather and I would hate to give it up just because I can't get a replacement nut. My R1 was one of the first ones that they shipped so theoretically my mounting nut could fail at any time.

As far as the suction cup mount is concerned for the R1/R3, I noticed the suction cup itself had to be clean and free of debris and of course the windshield clean...
