Just a heads up, Speed Cheetah has a small memo on their home page indicating that their membership prices will increase beginning August 1st, 2019.

Membership price increase
From 1st August, 2019, we will be increasing our Membership prices. Renew today to beat the price increase!
Edit: as of July 30th, the new prices have been revealed; Platinum (Lifetime, up to 3 devices, all regions) is now $99 USD, and Gold (3 years, 1 device, single region) is now $59 USD.

They don't actually say what the new prices will be, or if they will be discontinuing their lifetime membership plan.
They offer two purchase options right now, Platinum: $50 USD for lifetime access to database updates, all regions, and up to three devices; or Gold: $30 USD for 3 years of updates for 1 region, and only one device. Their Platinum lifetime is a good choice.

Some of you may not care about this as free apps like Google Maps & Waze can alert you to speed cams as well, however there are a few people I know, myself included, that prefer the dedicated hardware device for speed cam and red light cameras to alert us.

I already have three devices on a platinum account, so I am actually considering getting a 2nd platinum account to get an additional lifetime access for my 4th Speed Cheetah device, and to ensure I lock myself into this plan before they possibly discontinue new sales of it.

Current Price up until August 1st, 2019.
Platinum Membership
Lifetime updates with all region access
£34.99 | €44.99 | $49.99
  • Lifetime unlimited updates for all regions
  • Covers up to 3 family owned Cheetah units
  • Gives extended 3 years manufacturer’s warranty on first Cheetah product purchased at the same time.
  • Updates access transfers to future Cheetah products.
Current Price up until August 1st, 2019.
Gold Membership
3 years updates for a single region
£19.99 | €25.99 | $29.99
  • 3 years unlimited updates for a single region Choose from: USA and Canada, UK and Europe or Australia and New Zealand
Edit notes: added pricing information as discovered on July 30th by member @colink . Thanks @colink !

Thanks for the heads up. Could you share a little more about why you like their devices over an app or alerts in a RD?

I'm thinking their market is where RD detectors are banned/have massive penalties and/or the same with using your phone?

Isn't there places in Oregon that have severe penalties for using your phone?

For me, I like the idea of a dedicated device in the event I fail to open my navigation app.

Also, the Speed Cheetah devices use very descriptive dialogues clearly letting you know what the threat is and where. They will tell you things like "Speed Camera, Ahead, behind the overhead sign." or "Average speed camera ahead in 600 meters. Speed limit 60, your speed 65". Just like Waze and Google Maps, they won't alert you to surface street RLC's and SC's when you're on the freeway, and also won't alert you to cameras that don't apply to your direction of travel (such as if it's on the highway but only for the opposite lane of travel).

This is from page 10 of the product manual of the C50, an older unit, but the examples are still relevant for their newer C150 and newest C550 models.

That's true. There are a lot of places that ban radar detectors, making the GPS enabled RD's risky to use. These so-called "speed camera detectors" skirt those laws as they aren't radar detectors at all.

Some places do have differing restrictions on mobile phone use, and this is another device you can use that can't be confused with a phone.

Have you been buying them direct from SpeedCheetah, or another source?

That quality of alert information is very useful, and $50 isn't bad for a lifetime membership.

I actually bought all mine 3rd party. I got my C50 via eBay, my C150 from a member here on RDF, and my C550 from an authorized retailer out of Europe via eBay. If you keep your eyes out on eBay, you can find ridiculously good deals for them. I got my 4th C550 Silver via eBay as used for just $60 USD.

You can always just get the lifetime membership, and then track down the device later as you wait for it to show up on eBay for a good price.

The C550 is their newest model. They have it in two colors, black and silver. It is the same device. Unlike their membership plans, the color is not a reference to any hardware differences or capabilities.

The biggest differences with the newest C550 is that the screen is still able to be read when it has sunlight shining on it.

It looks like they changed the prices a day early :(

The prices I posted above were the current ones at the time. They stated they’d change them August 1st, as copied above.

Maybe you can email them and tell them you tried to place your order before August 1st but the price change happened before they said it would?!?

If you add the membership to your cart the price drops to what @sdrawkcaB quoted above.

Does this seem right on this Amazon listing?

Easy to update – using the included Platinum lifetime membership to Trinity 3.0 database updates,

Not being familiar with the pricing of this unit not sure it is added on to the price or one will need to purchase the lifetime package as well...

thanks

What price are you seeing? I see only one seller listing it for $249 + $5 USD shipping.

For what it is worth, they allow a few authorized retailers to sell it with different packages.

The cheapest I've seen the authorized sellers list them online has been roughly this:

C550 only: ~175 USD + S&H - CHEETAH C550 BLACK EDITION, SPEED CAMERA DETECTOR, SPEED TRAP, RED LIGHT CAMERA | eBay
C550 with Platinum Membership: ~243 USD + S&H - Cheetah C550 Black Platinum Edition Speed Camera Detector | eBay

Pay attention to the prices at the different sellers, as depending on if you add accessories such as the hardwire kit, gps antenna, and etc - it may turn out to be more expensive if the seller doesn't combine shipping.

Yes that is the listing I was referring to

Seeing other prices being posted now, seems to indeed include lifetime platinum updates....

Now you got me worried about accessories, I see unit comes with

C550
Power cord
Windshield mount
Magnetic dash mount
PC download cable
Quick start guide

I have to buy a separate gps antenna as well?

The GPS antenna is only needed if you have trouble in your specific vehicle. It's optional. Their normal product kits don't included it. I haven't had any trouble with the built-in antenna on my C550. It isn't as strong as an Escort or Uniden radar detector built-in antenna - those will connect to GPS while my car is still inside my garage. The Speed Cheetah C550 connects usually within 10 seconds of me backing my car out of my covered garage.

The other accessories you may want to consider are:
  • hardwire cable, connect it by a permanent power source instead of the cigarette adapter
  • stereo mute cable, mutes or lowers the volume of your radio when an alert is happening, provided your radio supports this

For those who prefer to use a phone, SpeedCheetah also has an app called TagACam. The annual membership is about $46.00 CDN but no lifetime membership is offered. It does have the advantage of over the air database updates though, and can run in background. I've found their Trinity database more comprehensive than Daze, especially in Europe and New Zealand.

I just got it for the phone. It’s $29.99 per year for USA. Since I was late to the party on the lifetime membership which is now $100, plus the unit is another couple hundred, it would take me over 10 years to get a good value out of the lifetime membership and device. By that time, this database might be integrated into a radar detector.

Watch eBay around Christmas time. Sometimes people will sell their gadgets to get some extra Christmas cash. I saw some crazy deals last year on used model C550’s.

Also, there is an authorized reseller from the UK selling the device and lifetime subscription together on eBay. With the price change now in effect, it is now a decent deal if you’re going to buy it new.
