I tested it out last night while at home, as well as on my way to the office. I found that while I was at home, I was able to select other users reports and enter a comment. When making a report myself, I didn't have the input field to add a comment at the same time as making the report. A few moments later, while stopped at a red light, I found I was not able to enter a comment on a police I reported myself moments earlier. I have Waze v4.53 for iOS.

Sorry for the delay, took awhile to find a thread where they changed the police commenting. It wasn't discussed before release, but the thread is up to 13 pages. It was changed without going to the Beta platform for testing. Plenty of people commenting asking why but nothing from staff explaining the reasoning as of yet. I'll keep monitoring to see if they explain why. It was a deliberate change it appears.

NY police were complaining about Waze messing up their DUI check points a year or so ago

If it's a LIDAR trap, I will usually leave a comment. But, any and every freaking time I've seen a comment and looked at it. It says "not there". So idiots, don't even know how to use the comment part and it's basically useless. I'm fine with them taking it off.

It's more the description box that you can fill out when posting the pin that I miss as that displays with the banner pop up when the alert is announced so it's right there on the screen to read... The comments are less useful but nice when someone else gets a pin up before me
This really sucks

Older versions still allow this and it still displays for people with the newer version so I just downgraded a couple versions and left it there for now... If it gets sorted I will update.

You just Google for old versions... Sites like uptodown have a ton of older versions, just uninstall the current one and install the older version you want... It will loose recently used addresses that are not saved. Then you just have to turn off auto updates in the play store settings.

Sigh................That sucks. Probably removed it because of either "safety" due to people crashing when trying to enter a comment while driving
Might be the result of the pressure Waze was getting from police departments a few months ago regarding this.

Really the only ones I care about are the ones for marking aircraft traps, with no description people just vote "not there" as they have no idea they need to be looking in the sky :)

I agree with @NHGuy .

Police departments have been putting a lot of pressure on Waze to eliminate police reporting, particularly on DUI check points. If anyone remembers way back in the days you used to be able to report check points and some high level senator got Waze to remove that.I assume that the ability to write comments on the report and people able to say it was a check point was hitting the police profit margins.

It is just Waze trying to not remove the functionality from the app by trying to remove the pressure from the police to take it off.Waze gives them a little bit so that they can't legislate a whole ban on it.

Everyone here talks about how the police hates detector users, but trust me when I tell you that although detector users are mildly annoying to them they hate Waze to a fever note. They switch locations, hide behind bridges, and even find ways to "unreport" traps to avoid people seeing it.

I would not be surprised that the people writting "not there" are the cops themselves.

I've confirmed commenting on other user's police reports was removed late July 2019. You can still comment on your own. It's a deliberate "feature".

and I can confirm if you use an older version it still works and shows up in the newer versions :) they just removed the ability to add the description in the new versions, the functionality still exists and functions in the older versions and the new version still displays it correctly. I just have to keep my spare phones on an older version for aircraft traps.

@Allen Dockery is our inside man with \/\/aze as an official inside beta tester for them. He informed us that they didn't list it in the feature change log; so the change was intentionally implemented and purposefully omitted from the public eye.

Yes, Waze beta is where I confirmed the information I posted. The change is in production and not a secret, though the exact reasons may be.
