I hope this post is not inappropriate. I am not trying to denigrate Uniden, but rather just to make them aware of some concerns that I have. I have thought about this for several weeks, but Charles leaving (not to imply at all that he is leaving because he shares my feelings) it just seems like a good time to post this for Uniden to see. And, maybe it is just me reading too much into things recently. But it just seems like I have seen a change in Uniden over the past several months. Since the head research guy left. They do not seem as willing to communicate with us here. We hear almost nothing. I do understand that the early release of the R7 due to disclosure of communications that Uniden didn’t mean to have released probably changed their philosophy a bit, but it wasn’t due to anything released here. The silence around the auto lockouts is one example. A lot of us upgraded due to their including that feature. Now, it is overdue and Uniden’s silence is concerning to me. I understand that some of us say that Uniden didn’t promise anything, but I believe they did and that they used others to get that message out. Another issue is that it seems like their update policy has slowed drastically after the research guy left again. Only one minor update since the R7 was introduced is also concerning to me. I also noticed that their rep. did not participate nearly as much and when he did, he wasn’t able to provide any information for us.

So my point. I do love my R7, but Uniden simply seems to have pulled away, I hope I’m wrong and I hope that they get back to being the Uniden of a few months ago. I would sure welcome that and them.

Hey I'm not sure if my reply is really necessary but I have being a Uniden costumer since they came out with their cellular phones early 90's. On the contrary I am fairly new to RDF and the direct link to manufacturers over here is tremendous.

As you said it they are going through some changes and it will probably take some time. Let's just keep the support because they are already doing so much for all of us.

These "changes" are completely acceptable; and not just that, it's needed for a corporation with that long of history. Let's be patient.

All valid concerns.

I have some concerns of my own, but I have already expressed them and I am not the one to beat on the dead horse.

Companies go through changes all the time. Not to downplay Charles’ contributions, but it sounds like he’s training his replacement and I expect we’ll get the same kind of responsiveness as we always have.

Uniden is active on other forums (like for their scanners) with the same level of engagement as they have here.

I don't get a good vibe coming from them anymore.
Did we ever get an answer on how the Notch Filter was implemented ? It was requested at least a couple times.
Why not let us know some of the details. Nothing super secret there.
I think we were spoiled with the meteoric rockstar rise of the R3 and lately its back to business as usual.

The guy that left Uniden was a PM, a Project Manager not a research employee, he facilitated user feedback to the development team mostly gathered from this forum from testers and some users. albeit he was very good at it and probably offered some direction in priority.
These shifts happen all the time, the only difference here is that we're lucky to have a forum involved enough that we actually have representation from a company like Uniden to gauge issues to aid them in their development map for bugs, etc because of the knowledge here and participation to help in real world testing.
I don't see anything here out of the ordinary except we're privy to what we would otherwise never know.
As for auto lockouts, there was an expectation that the patent expiration would be the leading factor in when that functionality would be released, but there has been divided opinion on that expiration date, some thought it was this year in June, but there's been some rumblings it's not until 2020.

I'll guess I'll just keep my opinion short and sweet.
I love my R3, but I'm glad I didn't buy into the R7 hype. If updates and features are added in the future that would be great, but right now they're nowhere to be seen.

Corporations have regular turn over, retirement, leaves, deaths, promotions and many other factors that contribute to a stable employee base.
They are to "manage" these things and have contingency plans.
Uniden is a large enough corporation to be able to fill these gaps as they appear.
Give it some patience and keep in perspective how much difference it makes in your life. Not much I bet.
Good luck to those moving forward in their career and welcome to those stepping in to fill the empty position.
Tough crowd here sometimes, carry on.

The R7 has been out like 3 or 4 months and already has had an update with some pretty nice features added (K notch filter, power button off delay, volume changes, custom memory allocation). I may be wrong but I think they have said they will not pre-announce new updates but for just being released a few months ago how many updates are people reasonably expecting and would they rather they not release the update and hold it back for auto-lockouts? The updates in the latest firmware were nice and imo better than auto-lockouts but we will probably get those as well so all the better. After a few weeks I already have the lockouts well set so the other features to me were higher value adds but I do realize that some put the same value on auto-lockouts.

There is another brand that hasn't even had their only model to sell since before the R7 release and had a subsequent firmware update with new features so relatively speaking Uniden could be a lot worse with things.

-Bigger easier to read screen.

-Rear detection With arrows.

-Much better laser filtering (the R3 had some nasty falses)

-K band Block .

-Superior range than the R3 both directions.

-More memory and faster processor, means more future features.

-lower MRCD range.

-The stealthiest arrowed dash mounted detector ever made

You are right, no extra features at all ...

I apologize about all of the frustration this has caused.

We have been relatively vocal about the Auto Lockouts. While its true that we haven't said much about when we're expecting them- it is just something that we do not provide. We keep release dates close to heart because there is a lot that can go wrong before we actually release the update.

When it comes to updates for our scanners, we have been adding functionality to the R7. As well as looking at updates for the R Series Detectors. We always appreciate the input, and we're here to accept critiques and concerns. Some of these things just take time, and try to get these issues resolved in a timely matter.

I just purchased an R7 and really like it. I gave my V1 to my wife. I do have a question about Auto Lockout implementation in general. I realize everyone's situation is different but I would like to have some control over what gets locked out.

For example, Scottsdale will often deploy a Photo Radar MRCD Van and leave it in the same location for a week at a time. If I drive by it twice a day to and from work - could a typical Auto Lock out algorithm potentially lock it out while it is still a valid threat? Or is it typically K Band only that would get locked out.

You do already have a setting that default X & K bands are the only ones you manually lock out.
Ka is an option you can choose.
MRCD I can't confirm but I highly doubt you will be able to lock it out. Or laser.
I believe someone here tested it but I think you can turn K band off and MRCD set to on will still work. Even though it uses a form of K band. (multiradar)

The notch filter is exactly that. A notch filter. The fact that it didn't work exactly right to begin with caused questions about how it worked.

I wouldn't worry too much about something which isn't available yet (auto lockouts).

BTW, those white Euro-looking vans which Scottsdale has aren't MRCD, they're very low powered K, even harder to detect that the competition (Redflex). Manufactured by ATS.

Those mini-towers which they deploy are MRCT. Saw one yesterday on Goldwater just west of Fashion Square.

What R7 settings do you recommend for the ATS vans?
Is it even practical to try and receive these signals?

Thank you for the info Mad Hatter. It's much appreciated. I am getting about 100ft on those mini towers. It starts out as a brief K band detection and flips to MRCD at 24.119GHz. There is one posted up by the schools on 60th St near Carefree Hwy. Those white Vans I get very little warning too. I just need to pay attention to the signs they put up. There has been a Van all week on Pima just north of the 101. My R7 did read MRCD but who knows since I have read that MRCD detection on the R7 is a work in progress :)
