I just bought the R3 2 weeks ago. I have 2 weeks option to get additional 3 year warranty on my R3 which would cover mostly anything from what i read (amazon) so they will fix it. or save the 35$ for 3 years and just use the 12 month manufacturer warranty, etc.
I read about it very hot running temp(concerns me long term) and speakers do go out.
Anyways, after 12 months of free warrant, I would roll the dice. I have found usually for me anyways my redline was 6 years old and still running when i sold it and bought the r3. But if there are issues I find for most part 12 months a bad speaker should reveal itself, etc. Anyways, anyone have Uniden customer care information if they are good, etc. Dealing with an issue inside the 12 months for example. Or the ext. warranty.

Well, I decided after reading mostly good but some a complete speaker fail, voice cutting out, i mean lemons happen. Its running so good now and only 3 weeks old had to decide to spend the xtra 33$ for 3 years replacement guaranteed if speaker or heat whatever its covered from amazon for 3 years. I feel at peace. Not worrying now. They make you get the warranty before 30 days or you cant get it. I wanted to make sure I wanted/liked the R3, and my redline sold that day so i was really hoping i liked the r3 and i do i love it. The way they have it set up to be quiet, and their filters are great with the advanced mode and correct settings its an awesome detector so i protected just in case of heat, it doesnt have 3 years since its been out so i played it safe. Amazon will replace and are good when you get this plan from them. not a squaretrade. from assurion amazon. speakers, electrical all of it covered.
I mean my old redline was 6 years old, light never came on, sold in 1 day on ebay(amazed) so it was always destine to be with the r3 i guess and it turned out excellent buy. I just like the peace of mind not knowing if this will hold up even half the time my escort redline did before replacing with the r3. Anyways, better safe than sorry.

I have had mine since September of 2017 and it has been flawless. No screen burn in and is still giving me great detections. The first one I purchased in July of 2017 went bad on me and Uniden replaced it. The replacement unit they sent was bad too but I got in touch with Tom at BRD and he got things straightened out. Let this serve as a reminder that who you buy the unit from can be just as important as the manufacturer.

Mines still working... it’s well over a year old. I think I bought it with the first batch.

I had my R3 for about 1.5 years before I sold it and had zero issues. TBH though, I only had use for it 2-3 times per week, always ran in dark mode, kept volume at half level, and it was only in the sun when in use.

My R3's been fine for over two years. Some screen burn-in though. I've always run it on bright and blue. Probably the worst combo to exacerbate the problem.

So what is a good color to run instead of blue traditional red like the redline? I mean i do have a 3 year warranty now from amazon so if something breaks they replace. worth the 33$ just in case since my 30 days was next week so either buy or not buy a warranty.... i decided based on reviews too risky not to have one

Regarding what @Brainstorm69 said about the blue color, @johnboy00 also stated this in a post over in the valentine forum. Pixels, OLED, LED, or color is not my thing so I have learned from those that are knowledgeable.

I purchased my R1 in March 2018 (8A serial #), I’ve had no issues. I did run it in blue color but did switch to amber (orange red) about 11 months ago. Running firmware 1.48. Amber is easy on eyes and shows up well.

Mine's almost two years old, no problems, tho I haven't updated to the latest firmware after reading of some negative results. I frankly don't follow this board that often, so I'm ignorant of any more recent updating issues.

I got my R1 in Feb. of 2018. I ran it on bright blue for at least a year before I knew about the screen burn in issues. Now I run it in dark mode till I get an alert, then it's still very bright with no sign of burn in. It's still a monster on range as well. I have since picked up 2 more of them! One from a member of the forum that was from the first batch of R1's and a brand new one that was only run for one hour! They are all monsters! The second R1 has screen issues, but I think it had the early screen before they did that update on the screens. All of the colors are washed out except for red and amber, they look just like new. I am running 1.48 in all of them. I run the other 2 in dark mode as well.

No ones mentioned the new FW drives the display differently to mitigate the burn problem.
Just released on Uniden site. 1.46

  • TSF returned to v1.25, better for drivers in CO
  • Dark mode blinking dot
  • Brightness setting for dark mode
  • Uniden boot logo color now matches main display color
    (
  • Default display color is now red (helps with burn-in))
    (
  • Maximum display brightness reduced slightly)
    (
  • Voltage display location slightly shifts around over time)
  • AM/PM design changed

All I can tell is the voltage indicator spreads out the display digits on some sort of time internal, example- 13.2 volt and then 13 . 2 volt

Thanx man. I'll try amber. I had read the last 6 years with my red line so I want something different and right now is under blue which is kind of cool under automatic dimmer so I don't do anything I think it automatically dims anyways thank you.

I had my R3 since late August 2017 and it's been a solid performer ever since. I haven't had any issues with the screen.

If the unit does go bad on it or you want to make a warranty claim, $33 isn’t bad at all. Consider that Uniden’s out of warranty cost for repair or replacement is $80 for the Uniden R3, and that $33 is less than 10% the cost of the R3’s original MSRP of $399 USD, it isn’t a bad price to pay for an extra two years.

I bought mine in december of 2017, together with a $100 gift card from the GM of the dealership I worked at lol. I sold it to my friend when the R7 came out a couple months ago. No hiccups at all. No burn in, no weird failures, nothing. This is what lead me to getting an R7, which has been the same for the most part, besides the arrows acting a little weird and a few things but nothing that was hardware related.

My friend being the stingy skeptic he is whenever he spends any money thought it was broken because we passed cops and it didn't go off a few times, but it's not assured that they were radaring anyway.
