Had to take a trip up to Charlton, Mass for a visit to my storage unit and decided to take I-84 instead of I-90 (Mass Pike) to try and get some LIDAR action. Not really wanting to exceed PSL on this trip due to maximizing MPG for non-ethanol gas experiments, the a-holes on 84 were getting me pissed. Besides the constant lane hogging and knee-jerk breaking to a full stop in the left lane, these buttholes were dangerous to be near. I saw a woman park her car in the left lane on a small bridge where there was no shoulder instead of moving it off to where she could get off the road. That caused several people to lock up the breaks and almost caused a pileup. She sits on a guardrail talking on her damn cell phone. STUPID! Then there was this yahoo in a pickup truck pulling a lawn mower type trailer loaded with cheap furniture that was not secured down. All of the sudden one of his living room chairs flies out the back and is rolling in the right lane down the interstate. WTF is wrong with these Connecticut people? Most dangerous day of driving I have ever seen.

I decided I had enough of this $#!+ and went into Sport Mode. Time to blow these a-holes away. I'm weaving and punching my way through the idiots around 80~85 (in a 55 zone) somewhere east of Toiletbury when I got my TMG alert, "Rear Laser. ???XR" (couldn't hear it over the music)...maybe XLR? I was cutting to the right lane to blow by the turd jam in the left lane when I got hit. I hit the breaks quick and came down to 60 when I let off the break. Auto JTK engaged and I made it down to a reasonable speed in time. NO CHASE DOWN, so I was saved. I didn't see the shooter, but I think he was on an entrance ramp. A couple of tenths of a mile down the road someone was pulled over on the left shoulder.

So there it is. My first hit "in the wild", and my first TMG save. ;)

PS - I took the Mass Pike back home and had a nice relaxing drive. No A-holes. Wedged a small water bottle in the steering wheel, turned on "Auto Pilot", and let ACC and LKAS drive my car, "Birdie", for me. It went many, many miles without me touching the steering wheel or gas pedal. Couldn't help showing off a bit by keeping my arms behind my neck and occasionally cracking my knuckles. :D

Hearing the words "Mass Pike" and "relaxing" in the same sentence is quite amusing. That road is so miserable to drive on, with the constant construction, idiotic drivers, and terrible road quality. I avoid that road like the plague ;) but I will give you the fact that 84 isn't much better. Connecticut drivers are the worst blend of MA and NY drivers.

Regardless, awesome to hear about your first save! Good thing for Auto JTK too, as you don't wanna risk jamming for too long. Interesting to hear if CT is using Stalkers now. I've only ever seen them using Truspeeds, and mostly TSS's at that.

I do have one, so I'll upload it in a minute.

I also have a long video of this, but I'm not far enough back to really capture it with a wide enough view. Need to get some cameras in this car!

You can sort of see it in the lower right opening. It makes the car think you have your hands on the wheel. Works very well when the lines are clear on the road. The section around Montgomery was the only section that had bad lines, so I had to steer there. Neat trick!

He wasn't sure what exactly TMG reported, so it easily could have been a TruSpeed LR.

I'll have to try that placement. :) I've seen people tape a bottle to the top of the wheel to keep the motion going. This looks better. :)

Honestly, I keep thinking someone needs to build a circuit that feeds the CPU micro-movements so that it thinks the wheel is being moved. Geohotz could probably do it but then some wouldn't spend the money on Comma.ai.

Yes, it's fun to watch it take the curves and all without me touching a thing. Most sections had good markings, so it just went automatically for many miles. I was ready to take immediate control though. And there were some people that passed me and took too long, so I lightly touched the wheel.

Yes, it could have been Truespeed LR

There are two types of NY drivers. Southeast NY, and the rest of NY. Your typical SE NY driver is fast, doesn't touch the breaks unless it's a real emergency, and will let faster drivers pass. They will also give you a break if you need to get in or out of a lane. My favorite drivers of anywhere I have driven. NNJ drivers are usually the same, but some of the snobby ones in the uber rich cars barge in and are rude. I usually see them coming and deny them that behavior pretty quickly. The rest of "upstate" NY drivers are slow in the head (and on the road) and intentionally rude, and actually looking to jump in front of you when you are trying to pass. They see you coming and just have to jam you. Major a-holes! F**k them!

Massholes? I haven't had a problem with them yet. They are usually trying to go as fast as they can...and so am I. BTW, no construction from where I entered to the NY line. Nice ride! I only wish the lines were painted in that one section so I could have gone to sleep and let the car take me home. :D

If you heard XR it may have been a false to traffipatrol XR ( a few people have had these falses with TMG and I got them with my LIs as there is some car cruise/anticrash system that's caused them, I disabled them in LI since we don't have them in the US). CT is mostly LTI guns and rear shots are rare. I believe TMG stalker alerts are "rear laser: Stalker xlr or RLR". But if it was a legit stalker gitnthen that's a good save. And yes CT drivers are a terrible mix of mass holes, oblivious RI drivers and self import at NY drivers. They don't mix well at all.

I tried it out for many miles (100+ off and on out of 500+) the last two days and it definitely works!
I always thought the water movement would have more to do with it but now I wonder if any sufficient weight on one side of the wheel or the other would accomplish the same. I've been slowly drinking the water to fine tune the results and then I can weigh it.

What appears to be happening for me is that the extra weight pulls the car closer to one side or the other and then the CPU corrects for it repeatedly.
Since that is probably causing more wear on the motor, I'd still like to ultimately see a software fix or trick.

I enjoy gripping or barely holding the wheel. Maybe I misread. Does not seem like fun driving. Unless, never mind.

[Edited to add] The LKAS system can be turned off and the vehicle driven like normal. The feature exists though so it's interesting to see what can be done with it.

I agree with you, but Honda's implementation is flawed because of the nanny-type safety junk that has been added. I've heard that older Acuras didn't have the nanny stuff and it worked as desired.

What happens is that you can be driving with a light grip/touch and doing so really smoothly and because the steering wheel isn't being moved every 15 seconds, a warning will display on the instrument cluster and the steering wheel will shake a little and then the system gives up.
Without those little wheel adjustments every 10-15 seconds to prove that there is someone paying attention, the system quits.

Adding weight causes the wheel to move, but then you can get an oscillating behavior. That's why I'd like to find out what type of signal the CPU gets and artificially inject enough of that signal to fool the system into being happy.
I seriously doubt Honda will be allowed or willing to disable the nanny stuff.

Congrats on the save! You guys are going to make me spend even MORE money, thanks a lot! Jammers front and rear will be my next investment on the Boss 302.

Reminds me of a trip from Denver to Colorado Springs. Big lifted truck spewing coal by everyone as he was going down the left lane then his lawn furniture comes bouncing off. I watched that nasty chair go through the person behind me windshield. I hope they found the a** hat.

Rear shots are the most surprising especially if they are being sneaky. Nice save!

@thebravo I think you may be right about the Traffic Patrol XR. :(

I think I did hear "Traffic Patrol" in the message. So, if nothing else, I did get some practice reacting to an alert, and did come down to tolerance speed in time. But what does it take to get hit in CT??? I can't get shot for nothing!

Thanks to everyone who congratulated me on the save. Sorry for the "false save" report. I was reading the TMG section and saw all the reports on this false. Hopefully TMG will lockout that profile for us Stateside users. It's good "practice", but risky jamming on the breaks in traffic for no legitimate reason.

I hear ya. I too wish we could fool the system. 15 oz water works best for me. I tried sipping out a little at a time, but it eventually complained. I usually have some grade pulling me to one side, so I use that to my advantage to pull back. But we could probably find a better way. Food for thought. ;)

@PHILBERT
The ONLY lidars I've ever been shot w/ in CT are a variety of LTIs & a ProLaser 3 in last 20yrs. Between Hartford & Mass I see the most Lidar enforcement on I-84. Multiple times I've seen the Troopers back-shooting from an "ON"-ramp w/ 2 or 3 chase cruizers. Lastly, the latest tactic for them is sitting parked in the breakdown lane & shooting rearward off the Drivers door RVM. The TSS is a fav for this type of sniper trap the past several months.
