Aren’t there 2 patents in question?
  1. The original (manual lockouts) GPS patent that expires next year. And the
  2. Auto Lockout GPS patent that expires sometime in the 2030s
It seems crazy that an invention using common sense can be patented. At same time, there have been poor implementations of lockouts.

Why does Uniden even need to wait for an Escort patent to expire? Can't they just create their own? Then it be theirs to use. I see zero reason for Uniden to stand at the doors of Escort and wait to use their algorithm someday. Just my 2 cents
Its called lawsuit, they are already involved in one. Escort loves to sue any company, so why they risk it until there always give the green light...

Because patent violations are worth a helluva lot more than 2 cents in actual and punitive damages (think millions)

All Participants,
The topic is *R7* auto lockouts. Stop thrashing Uniden because they don't have an open API, and are not Valentine or Escort. Stay on topic or the thread will be locked.

Specifically where did Uniden advertise auto lockouts? I saw one post by the Uniden rep on this forum referring to it, but no advertisement. I’d be interested in the link to the advertisement. I’ve read resources say it’s capable. I’ve read unofficial statements saying July 2019. I’ve personally never seen anything from Uniden promising auto lockouts with a date attached to it.
Understood.

That's why I mentioned that they should have their own patent attorneys to investigate this. I'm not going to argue this further. I own many Uniden products and it's not going to stop me from purchasing more in the future. I am completely aware that lawsuits & judgements are expensive. Thank you for your input.

The big hurdle around lockouts is that Escort has the patents on using GPS based lockouts with a radar detector. So unless you license GPS functionality from Escort:

How do you implement lockouts without using GPS?

GPS is the gold standard for location services. It has great coverage and reliable accuracy. Someone might be able to determine location based on cell phone tower location, strength and extrapolation. Perhaps tied with WiFi signal strengths/locations (but Google did get in trouble for capturing WiFi SSIDs while mapping). But accuracy would be the issue.

What upsets me about auto lockouts with the R7 is that a company like Uniden has access to patent attorneys. Don't advertise a feature and say that it should be available around June 2019 when they have the resources available to say whether this is realistic or not. When I hear that it might be available in 1-2 years, that doesn't give me much confidence in a company, especially given that they will probably have a new detector by then. Given how they are supporting the R1 & R3 since the R7 came out is a clear indicator to me how things will probably go with the R7 and auto lockouts.

We have never made a statement on when it would be available.

While I wish we could know all that's going on to disway any negative thoughts, the enemy will ALWAYS take advantage of information. It's the nature of the beast in business "dog eat dog" to beat the other dogs to the bone!

So many things just can't be openly discussed as they will be twisted with attempts for the public to micromanage every point to their own comfort zone and level of understanding.

Yes, it's an expensive detector but the production price of having arrows as mentioned in my other posts is almost the expense of two detectors as two ears "horns" & circuits are needed to determine direction in an instant.

So look what we're getting so for our money that's above & beyond cheaper high-end alternatives.
1. Arrows! - yay!
2. Stellar sensitivity rivaling the champions of yesterday.
3. 4 freq detailed numerical display at the same time if desired.
4. Other options I see on no other like altitude? Wow! That was a freebie!
5. Multicolored display with choice of brightness and color.
6. Angled display to favor driver. (maybe they can add flip display with a mount also on bottom to accommodate the rest of the world who drives on the wrong side of the road!)
7. Customization of sweeps without the confusing process of 3rd party apps & devices.
8. Other customizations such as how memory is allocated and many other unique options.

Those are just off the top of my head...

The R7 was designed to have the function and we do plan on having it.
Thank you for commenting on this. I apologize for my previous post. I believed that it came from Uniden itself but obviously I was mistaken.

No Problem. A lot of it has been speculation here, and with good reason... it is a feature people want and we have said that we would have it.
After a while, speculation gets turned into fact in a lot of peoples' minds and I don't much care to see people unhappy because they feel let down.

This is great confirming news... That means new buyers don't have to fear the need for more or different hardware with send-ins when the feature manifests.. So buying now is safe.

Oh yes it is.
How so?

This thread is in regards to Uniden/R7 models and when they may or may not receive a feature.

The topic of any other detector and features/implementation they do or don't have offer zero bearing on the topic of conversation here. This was supported by a moderator as well.

Please tell us how, otherwise merely stating :eek:h yes it is: is just simple trolling.

I can see it both ways, but my response was entirely related to this post.

The best auto lockout solution might not even be patented. A simple log on the RD side, and a documented lockout database format. Bring the RD home and post-process the log on a PC to generate the lockout database. Would be really easy to implement, and the manufacturer could just call it a diagnostic log, while the community creates the post processing software.
The intent was to say that what @mb300sd was talking about already existed and that the wheel didn't need to be invented, or re-invented. It's already a reality. I was trying to be general by saying "apps" and only one detector has an open API at the moment.
One thing to note is that there might be a way to get this kind of data. It was shown to be feasible a handful of months ago with a disassembled R3. If that can happen, then the rest of what mb300sd mentioned is possible and much more in real-time.

I was not trying to bring up something unrelated to the R7, sometimes discussions like this can lead to new stuff. :) Each reader can take it or leave it. No slight was intended.

Also, I was asking the mods to sanitize my own posts as well after post 24. (Or even post 24 if needed) I might not have been clear on that.

How is it even remotely "trashing" Uniden when they absolutely DON'T have a feature everybody wants that they said was coming June/July-ish 2019????? More importantly it is ALL about Escort because that is why said feature hasn't been activated because Escort would sue Uniden.

Just saying . . . .

Let's just all be sensitive to the fact that open discussion is encouraged.

However RDF also wants to Maintain a friendly environment to vendors so they feel comfortable hanging around answering tech questions & keeping us all updated the best they can with a harmonious relationship.

Mike V bailed the forums bc he couldn't endure the heat, it takes thick skin... but admittedly we can be cruel to the point of turning into a mob if we're not careful.

We all very much appreciate Uniden listening and being open to suggestions.

This is a win-win!

We have to trust vendors and raise questions & concerns without malice.

Sometimes easier said than done.

Fact is, without us they would suffer, likewise without vendors on RDF we all suffer too!

How lost we would all be without this great RDF platform to express our experiences, knowledge & concerns!

RDF has done a good job of not being polluted with vendor politics as many vendors feel they deserve favor & preference over other vendors of they grace us with their presence here.

We all need humility to see the big picture.

It is nice to have sneak peeks into the future but it's like giving one piece of candy to a kid, it's never enough!

As enthusiast, we all are a bit burn't from past misrepresentations and promises from past vendor debacles and deceptions after the purchase to cover their tracks and poorly implemented overhyped marketing.

*Hopefully Uniden can understand the tension.

*Also hopefully users can give Uniden a break and realize they have a great track record if you consider what they've already delivered.
They have earned trust and a good track record and do deserve patience.
