I know there are several pilots on here. Any of you guys ever flown a RV? I’ve been toying with starting a RV-10 build. It seems like a real 4 person aircraft with luggage. There are so many things you can do at a reasonable price in the experimental category.

Very cool airplanes. The Van's mothership is a 12-minute flight from my home airport in my 100 knot airplane.
They all handle wonderfully, and have great slow-speed to high-speed ratios.

I dunno man. I have 13k hours TT and told myself I'd never set foot in a homebuilt/experimental. I know two people killed in homebuilt crashes, one of which was on the aircraft's maiden flight. Flying an F-16 in the mid-east is a lesser risk than flying a homebuilt. Just my 2c.

I think they have like 10,000 planes completed. The experimental category does have a slightly worse safety record. I know the the Lancair IV-Ps were very unforgiving aircraft.

On the vans forum. There seems to be a lot of cool safety features guys are adding. Dual electronic ignitions, backup alternator and battery. The RV-10 supposedly handles like a Bonanza. But, point taken.

To each their own, but you're eliminating a lot of really cool airplanes from your life.

I would like to see how many accidents are from stupid pilots. There was this RV7 or 8 that was being auctioned off near me. You could tell the landing gear had been reworked. I pulled the NTSB on the aircraft and it had been in 2 accidents. First one was the guy that built it in Texas had tried to land on a home grass strip. Floated too long, hit a fence and ditch. Ground looped it. The next guy came in and pancaked the landing gear and bent the wing spar.

Alot! There's definitely things I did in the past when I was younger which were stupid.

My dad is a retired pilot and current flight instructor (including instrument and multi engine). I asked him about these, and he said: “These are amazing. But truthfully, the only ones I would be interested in are the ones that have already been completed by a competent builder. And those run around $200k. I could get something pretty good for less than that.”

True, buying from a known builder would be an option. And they are expensive. It seems they are going for a premium prebuilt. Just looking at building one with the QuickBuild wings and fuselage probably around $175k, you get nice leather interior, 3x Garmin G3X, GTN650, with AC, 0 TT Barrett 290 hp IO-540. Most anything in the certified world is going to a 6 pack, 10 year old 1200 time engine and a 530W. And you could go with a vacuum system and legacy nav and save $35k. But, that all glass would be sweet.

The only time I have seen an RV fly was in a documentary called "Spaceballs"
