I’m testing IOS 13 beta. Good news! You can now run phone apps without interrupting CarPlay functions.

Meaning... Waze on CarPlay and Escort Live (Or RDFGS2 perhaps? ) on the phone. CarPlay no longer defaults to the selection screen when the phone is opened.

WooHoo!

That’s great news! I’m also testing the beta and loving it so far! Unfortunately I don’t have CarPlay currently, but good to know this is now possible.

Let me ask you this. It seems most of the time when I’m playing iHeartRadio it stops and kicks back to iTunes. Is that what you’re talking about? Will IOS13 help with that? thanks

Now we just need to get more auto manufacturers to support wireless CarPlay (and AA) from the factory.

My short amount of testing shows that when you plug it into the car it reverts to the last audio app used.

I read that the new dashboard view is locked to only Apple Maps. If true, I hope they open up this feature for use with Waze/Google Maps.

I totally agree and that is remarkably frustrating. So even if I put iHeartRadio on it’ll automatically switch back to iTunes regardless of how many times I start the iHeartRadio app. I have to reboot the phone and then it will work.

Could be just a beta thing... like the multitasking ability they put on iPhones beta at one time. We’ll have to wait for the gold master to get released to see what sticks.

That’s odd. I haven’t seen that before. If I get in the car with an app playing audio, whether an Apple app or a third party, the app continues to play when switching to Bluetooth or CarPlay. The only time it’s been different is when it’s been a while since I had anything playing on the phone, and it starts playing something from the Music app instead of the Podcasts app that would’ve been the most recent to be used.

I don’t know why it’s doing it on mine. It just started I believe after the last update and if not since then then only a few months before that. Sometimes I think it could be the computer stereo in my car but then it’s the Apple device that determines what it’s going to send through the Bluetooth right?

Correct it’s locked to Apple maps. You can still use other maps, but not with the split screen.
Hopefully they later allow Google/Waze.

Yeah, whether Bluetooth or CarPlay it’s still the phone that decides what to play. CarPlay (and AA I believe) is just an extension of the phone, like a monitor and mouse hooked up to a laptop, not itself a smart device. If the car’s infotainment system switches to some native app rather than Bluetooth or CarPlay, that’s the infotainment system’s fault. If the phone starts playing from a different app, that’s the phone’s fault.

Downloaded and installed the public beta today. Liking it so far. It really is so much more convenient to keep the carplay display up while I bring up another app on the iphone.
