Anybody familiar with me posting knows I generally tell stories so:
Tl;dr I got nailed for 74 in a 60 but he reduced it to 65 in a 60.

First, I'll acknowledge that I failed hard in this scenario, countermeasures aren't worth shit if you don't pay attention with your EYES. My girlfriend and I headed to the Tri Cities to meet up with some people for my birthday, headed home we were going a different route just to see some new scenery (just recently moved to Washington, always interested in seeing new things). The location on my phone has been fucked lately so I haven't even bothered with Waze (Mistake 1), neither of our phones were displaying a sensible route home (not paying full attention to the road Mistake 2) so I missed a PSL change from 70 to 60. I didn't see the Washington State tax collector (when did they get blue Impalas?) until a moment before my R1 blared Ka (didn't pay attention to the frequency cuz I knew I was toast and I didn't care). GF knows what Ka tone means, says "hope you weren't speeding" but the blue lights were already on. Handed him license and registration, no sir I don't know how fast I was going, where did the speed limit change?

Anyhow: he typed on the ticket that he clocked me at 74 in a 60 but was citing me for 65 in a 60. So, about fighting this. $100 for 5 over is better than whatever 15 over is in this state, and I'm not sure what slap on the wrist 5 over does to insurance. And if I do fight it can they reverse the "generosity" and jack it back up to the 74 in a 60 if they feel like it? From what I hear about WSP I was fully expecting to bend over hard, kind of thankful it was this "lenient".

You were good either way, 15 over is considered a major violation as far as insurance is concerned. Insurance companies also do not run an MVR on all applicants every year due to the expense . They just spot check at random. I am in the insurance business and have been for 20 years.

@bamapepper are you saying because it would've been 14 over it is viewed similar to 5 over in the event insurance does check? I was looking at buying another vehicle later this year which would need to be added to insurance...It was in a different county 2 hours south, doing court would be an involved process with taking off work, driving down there, etc.

And yea asleeper, happy fuckin birthday right? We had to exit and turn around and pass him the other direction because of how/where we pulled over. Fucker literally reversed 50 yards, parked again, and brought out his Truspeed S. Another thing that's bothering me is there was traffic in all three lanes, I did not think radar was accurate enough to pick me out of that, guess I'll have to go back and watch Vortex videos again.

I got a ticket for illegal left turn (didn't see sign), on my 16th birthday, on my way to juvenile traffic court for a speeding ticket. The judge was nice enough to throw out the illegal turn ticket with a "happy birthday."

That sucks, but at least he cut you a break. I'm glad he at least did that! For just 5 over, maybe they'll just throw it right out of court? This is one time I might try my luck with the judge! Tell him it was your birthday, and IF you don't go to a NC or Va courtroom, hopefully they will say to hell with it! Good luck!

I wouldn't fight it. He gave you a break. Often if you fight it after the LEO gave you a break, the judge will then charge you for the full speed that he got you at. That's the way it is here. YMMV.

That's exactly my main concern with this. I don't want to take a day off work, drive two hours south, and deal with the courts just to lose the break he gave me. Washington is notorious for their enforcement so I could definitely see that as a possibility.

Same, I wouldn't fight it either for the above mentioned reason. Tickets suck, no one wants to get one but the cop/judge might stick it to you since you got a break already.

I've been having the same thought, good to know I'm not the only one that thinks like that. My first reaction before he was even at my window was that I was going to fight it, but after his break I really don't want to push my luck further. Who knows when I might need that for another day.

That is correct, I normally drive at 14 over for that reason, School zone excluded and I mainly drive at that speed on highway. I would stay away from 30, 40 MPH zones at 14 over. The passing of a school bus while stopped is equal to a dui fyi.

WSP had unmarked and semi marked cars for quite a while now. Part of their "Aggressive Driving Task Force".

They also employ Aircraft Patrol.

I've noticed plenty of their barely marked white cars, and knew of their VASCAR (saw plenty of lines in that actual trip) but the dark blue was new to me. Just moved to the state a couple months ago so still getting used to them. Really these are just excuses though, I missed a lot of the basics and it bit me, plain and clear :)

The one that got me was just wearing a regular pencil thin black tie, but with their level of commitment there's gotta be some bow tie wearing LEOs around here.

I’d call the local court or the number on the back of the ticket and ask if they have a “forgiveness program”. Basically they take your money for “court costs” and if you don’t get a ticket in say 12 months it goes away. Or ask for traffic school. Can’t hurt to ask they just want your money so they are likely to offer some kind of service like this if you don’t have a long record.

Example of one don’t know if this is still current:
