Hey everyone,

So something myself and a few of the other staff members have been thinking about for a while is creating something that we would call the RDF Forum Network - the RDF Network of Forums...

rdfnetio.png

You may have heard me mention this idea around here every so often, asking if anyone here currently administrates a forum, or knows of any forums that are not being ran properly/still active but the staff is just losing interest, etc - or if you are interested in creating your own forum relating to any niche you're interested in from the ground up... This offer still stands - if you have any interest in becoming part of the RDF Forum Network, or know a place that would be a candidate/wants to make an introduction, please contact me via PM.

Anyway, it's really a simple concept...:
  • Our forum's user database would be linked between other forums which are part of the RDF Forum Network. If you sign into RDF, or any of the other forums in the network, you will automatically be signed into all of the forums in the network.
  • Each forum in the network would have their own individual set of administrators, moderators and other staff members - as that forum's staff sees fit. The position "Global Administrator" would be created, for admins such as myself/CJR238/etc who would have the ability to administer each individual forum in the network - this position would mainly be for tech/advising purposes. Each individual forum's staff would run their forum as they want (there would be a few global rules we'd implement, but each forum would be independent, similarly to the way staff is implemented).
That's the basic concept behind the idea. You can read some of the more specific features about the addon/system that drives such a concept here: Beta - XenCentral Multisite System 2

Quoted from the above link...:

  • Basic options setup for each site - site title, URL, description. URL is used to detect active site.
  • Cross-site login. Even if boards are running under completely different domains and do not share cookies, it is possible to synchronize login/logout between all configured sites/domains. This feature requires OpenSSL PHP extension to be installed.
  • Available nodes setup for each site. Nodes and their threads not available under particular site will be 301-redirected to correct domain.
  • Default style setup for the site, and option to force it (so the site can not be used with any other style).
  • Default language setup for the site, and option to force it (so the site can not be used with any other language).
  • Registration secondary user groups setup.
  • Site-specific statistics.
  • Site-specific search.
  • NEW! Site-specific sitemap for nodes, threads, tags, resources, medias, albums.
  • Site-specific news feed.
  • Site-specific new/recent posts.
  • Site name in search results. If enabled, and if search results contain threads not available under current domain, the name of domain of the thread/post will be shown in search results. For such nodes/threads/posts automatic 301 redirect occur and correct site is opened.
  • Administrators and moderators filter.
  • Add-ons filter.
  • Crons filter.
  • Navigation tabs filter.
  • Tags filter.
  • Widgets filter.
  • Resource categories filter.
  • Gallery categories filter.
  • Override Options. A powerful system allowing to customize any XenForo and 3rd party add-ons options for each site. Options are added/removed using AJAX and fully support original option's UI.
  • Content Replacements - Simple Replacements and Regexp Replacements.
  • Domain Members online and Domain Forum statistics widgets.
While RDF, and especially RDFGSv2 are going to be my primary projects going forward, I'm thinking about launching a new forum as a proof-of-concept/working example of the RDF Forum Network idea, which would be based around tech/hardware/software/etc. I wanted to find out if anyone here has any interest in getting in on the ground-level of such a forum (tech-related forum) - planning, staffing (we'll need admins/mods), and execution/launch/day-to-day operations of it.

Being able to launch a brand new forum with 20k members (current amount of RDF members) instantly is extremely appealing to many people - those who have considered wanting to start a forum in the past, etc. It's also appealing to other forums which have a staff losing interest but don't want to shut down their forum because it is still used, but for whatever reason the staff is just not really active anymore. There are lots of benefits to all of this.

Anyway, that's the idea and something we're now seriously exploring. If anyone has any thoughts regarding any of this (I'm just waiting for the one or two people to state 'meh this sounds dumb' or 'too much work' or whatever - guy's, I get it, it's not for everyone - if you have serious reservations against such an idea please state them in detail, not with unhelpful half-line responses, please), or my individual proposal regarding the launch of a tech forum mentioned above/if you are interested in staffing such a forum, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks!

Interesting idea, my first thoughts are that this is similar to the role that social groups already play, but I can see how if it were a distinct forum for a topic, like minded people would be more likely to join and participate. If this goes forward, I would definitely be interested in helping. Have you put any polls out about this?

Yeah, this would be a significant difference between a social group. It would be a completely separate forum, really. Just with a shared database.

We've talked about doing a tech forum just in general for a while now, hence my thoughts about doing that as a POC mentioned above.

Polls, just in general discussion/talking with people. I don't think it would be really that helpful in regards to this - unless you could get more specific on what the purpose of one would be.

so you would actually host the forum? If it's an active forum you would transfer threads from the other forum to your format etc?

Yes, all forums would be hosted on RDF's servers. All hosting would be provided by us.

If it's an active forum, their forum would be imported to a new, multisite-linked XenForo2 forum - all users, threads, posts, conversations, etc would be imported into this new, multisite-linked XenForo2 forum, at which point after the import, their user database would be shared with ours (so they could use their login information from their forum to login to their new multisite-linked XenForo2 forum, as well as on rdforum.org), but their forum (categories, sections, threads, etc) would exist independently from rdforum.org - just as it does on their current forum.

Is there a cost to this?

We would provide all server hosting at no cost. The only cost to the incoming/newly linked/newly created forum would be for an additional XenForo license (required to run XenForo on a separate domain name - you can't use a single XenForo license for multiple domains unless one is a development/testing environment and not open to the public).

Edit: These costs mentioned here are relevant to what is being proposed in the OP here, and not for commercial purposes - but for community-based websites/forums and only for a very limited time/limited number of. RDFNET is in the process of creating a service for commercial purposes/after the limited time frame (currently undisclosed) mentioned is over.

From the link you posted, it seems like this would only be 35 EUR/yr. Is this correct?
Edit- I think that's just for the updates past one year. Seems too cheap.

I'm very interested in this across the board but I'm not sure that I have the time.

First, when are you implementing the POC?

Second, when will you start adding forums?

Once the new themes for RDF are completely merged in I'll be looking at starting work on it.

In the mean time I'm gauging interest using this thread, and will be posting an official thread regarding calling for submissions of staff applications, and applications for those interested in help getting things up and running/etc. Within the next week for this thread.

Second, when will you start adding forums?
What do you mean?

My only problem is my "other" forum life is in the explorer realm, and I'm sure you don't want the people associated with that on here... Should we go ahead and exclude any Dodge Charger forums????

Great idea BTW.

Thanks, and absolutely - the point is that these networked forums will be their own forum - they essentially just share a user database with us (cross-site login capabilities). So, satanists, pacifists, explorers, all are welcome.

And lol, and impala forums.

Sounds like a great idea I’m very intrigued. I would be willing to help and assist in any way possible we’re all a family here!
