I am 4-days into a 2 week round trip from Chicago to Dallas. There are lots on “photo enforced” construction zones on the interstates.

My Pro M is currently set to Radinso’s recommendations with FW-16. Overall it’s a great RD and has been very quite , giving timely notice of LEOs, but with a few stray K and Ka that I can’t justify beyond BSMs.

What additional settings, if any, should be considered in these construction zones and how are they monitored? Does the “photo enforced” frequency vary between states, or is standard?

Slightly OT. While traveling west on I-44 in Missouri I saw a LEO sitting high on an eastbound on-ramp shooting at the backside of passing vehicles.

Thank you in advance

I have similar cameras here in MD. The ones here are Poliscan, the Pro-M does not detect.

Not much you can do filter those construction zone speed cameras (or even the drones). My understanding is the speedcams are lower in power so they won't annoy you for so long. The drones I will pick up a mile or two away at least. The best you can do is to mute them. There is no standard frequency being used. The drones use regular police radar guns (mostly K band IME) so no way to filter them out.

Beware, those shots from behind you see on the entrance ramps could be lidar!

Drones? What drones?
Not airborne drones, but simply unattended radar guns possibly hooked up to a speed display as you enter a construction zone.

The Pro M has not alarmed in these zones, so either there are no cameras present or the RD default settings don’t include these frequencies.

Yes, all the construction zones have the typical speed displays prior to entering the zones, but the “photo enforced” signage are posted after you pass those speed signs as you enter the reduced lanes.

Are “photo enforced” cameras using MRCT or MRCD? Are they located in a vehicle?

Or are they really even there at all? Has anyone here on the Forum ever gotten a ticket from a "photo enforced" construction zone speed sign?

Here's a thread to the dreaded photo K band van used by the Illinois State Police:

RDF Photo Radar Encounter

And a news article with a video showing the equipment:

Interesting. On my annual runs through IL, I've never seen a van like that. But I have seen plenty of construction zones with K-band speed signs/drones with signs that say the speed limit is photo enforced. Just have never seen anything that looks like a camera.

How often are these used on Illinois highways? I only drive through IL 2-4 times a year and have yet to see one and there are a lot of construction zones. At least you have higher speed limits in your construction zones. Indiana is just ridiculous, but NO speedcams. We fought them off for another year.

Can't say I've ever seen it either. Looks like it's used in the Central and Southern parts of the state, not near Chicago.

So far, Illinois is the only state I’ve seen using these signs.

Thanks for posting the video of the van being used to monitor speed in construction zones. I’ll be looking out for it on my return trip and see if the Pro M will gives a corresponding alert.

Found this interesting tidbit about Illinois photo enforced construction zone speed limits....

"When would photo speed enforcement be in use?
Photo speed enforcement by an automated traffic control system may operate only during those periods when workers are
present in the construction or maintenance zone, day or night."

See: http://www.idot.illinois.gov/assets/uploads/files/travel-information/pamphlets-&-brochures/workzone il fact sheet.pdf
Also note that two radars are in use, one for the speed sign and a second for issuing citations to motorists that don't slow down. That implies that the kill zone does not happen right when the speed sign is showing your speed, it is some later. From the same document:

"Do I have an opportunity to slow down before the camera takes my picture?

Yes. In addition, the vans will have a speed indicator device that will be triggered by a separate radar and will communicate the vehicle's speed to the motorist. This will give the motorist one last opportunity to slow down before the camera radar is triggered. If the motorist does not slow down, the camera radar will be triggered. A photo of the driver, vehicle, and license plate will be taken. The time of day and speed will also be captured."

Only 124,000 tickets here in Maryland in the first year of use on the DC beltway:
