I like running with the normal display view. But, sometimes I'm curious where an alert is. It would be nice to be able to click on the alert and have the app flip to the map view with the alert centred on the map, along with a toggle button to get back to the normal display view. This isn't a urgent request, but something I thought would be handy.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I travel to Washington and have personal experience with VASCAR. This is the last thing I need to nail down to have a little more peace of mind when travel in that state.

I would gladly pay for this app.

Is it possible to have this app override CarPlay when an alert happens? For example, when I plug into CarPlay, my iPhone screen goes blank and CarPlay takes over unless I interact with my iPhone. I would like to not run a second device.
Trust me, I know what that's like — I've lived in a VASCAR/ENRADD state for a long time. I will look into the CarPlay override; #1 priority is to provide an identical experience as ferius's Android app and get it out to RDF users as quick as possible to get feedback and continually improve the product.

P.S. How to remove an option from the poll? Don't see any way to do this.
There should be an edit button on the poll. If not, report this post and write in the report what poll option you want removed and I'll do it for you.

Just published v1.2 to the Play Store

In this version I've added quieting alert sound down after several seconds (1-10) and organized settings in two levels.
Also there were couple stability improvements and bug fixes.

Note, it may take some time for the update to be delivered (sometimes up to 24h).

P.S. I keep adding new options to the "next feature" poll, so it may be a good idea to re-check it periodically.

Hey Ferius!
The app is coming along nicely!

I'd like to elaborate on the auto-start concept.
As you work with that feature, perhaps you can include the ability to allow specific calls from Android to perform startup with monitoring and shutdown.
I can start the app (but not start monitoring) with an automation program, it would be nice to be able to shut it down with the same automation program using broadcasts. :)

I love how you listen to our suggestions/ideas for this awesome app. These updated gets better and better! We look forward for the improvements and use this app you designed for all of us. It's always nice to have an extra counter measurements/aids while driving esp for long distance. Thanks as alway!

If you put an auto-start feature [I can go either way with this one], you could split the mute button into mute and settings button.

Another feature that I came up with would be to flash donuts on the screens of all LEO in a 5 mile radius followed by discounts for a limited time only. OK, I have a weird mind.

I think you should already be able to stop it by broadcasting com.highwayradar.app.STOP_SERVICE intent (haven't tested it though).

lol =)

@ferius you should be able to edit your poll by deleting the full text in each poll option text box.

After I moved to the US four months ago, I tried to use Waze as a primary navigation app. It does a great job on speed trap alerting in more or less urban areas but doesn't work really well on inter-city highways for two reasons:
  • it often alerts too late,
  • it doesn't know anything about VASCAR patrolling from aircraft (possible in WA, where I live).

Play store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.highwayradar.app
Web site: https://highwayradar.com/
An chance we'd see this most excellent app on ios APP store?? (in future??)

I totally agree that Waze is delinquent oft times and any additional help to supercharge it would be welcome. I often use it in FL to see "groupings" of Blue Hats in one area (concentrated) to figure out that they're using aircraft, BUT it's not foolproof. Using ADS-B is an excellent way since if you're the first guy in line at the white measuring lines, there's going to be no one else to alert you to the presence of AC. Your app resolves this issue nicely.

I'd love to hear from @hiddencam as to how the droid app is currently working for him and how "fresh" the alerts are??

Thanks to everyone for the first feedback!

I'm Windows + Android user, so, unfortunately, iOS development is very complicated for me (buy iPhone, buy Mac, buy developer license, pray not to be kicked out of AppStore). If anyone wants to take this initiative I'd be happy to help.

This is a really nice proposal. However, it doesn't fit well into this app's concept. I'll think about implementing this as a separate service (Messenger bot, email or so), might be really useful.

I thought that adding 0.25mi option to the alert distance selectors would be a good idea, will prioritize this.

Hm..., never thought about it. I'll add a settings option to make it darker.

This is a good suggestion, I'll put adding a volume control to my backlog.
Curious as to whether George could do this with his V1 app (V1Driver for ios)..........

I don't have any Apple devices in my fleet so the entry bar into Apple development is too high for me (and also no reason for me to work on an app that I won't use).
However @m3o is working on porting this application on iOS afaik.

Actually, that's BOTH funny and intuitive (ELON???)......

I'll buy you an iPhone if it will help your development.

Serious thought here. I'm not sure if waze would share data of known locations historically LEO locations and I'm pretty sure that no one else has plane info like this but is there anyway that we could store the locations and share them to a collective? It would be the perfect map for locating speed traps. And if you need any database help, I'm a professional data nerd.

I had this idea of scraping Waze data to estimate potential threat at every point of the map at any given time. If you want to build a threat model I'd be happy to help you with gathering Waze data and integrating this into Highway Radar.

I also think of adding RDFGS data to highway radar sometimes in the future.

Yes, they are quite touchy about their data.

Looking at them quickly I found:

FR24 claimed 1500* of 13,536 aircraft in a map of US - Washington State to Cuba and a bit out in the Atlantic.
Opensky-network claimed 2524 planes out of 3971 in a similar view. (oddly higher in US but far less overseas)
adsbexchange claimed 4482 out of 7718 in a similar view (it took a while)

So that leads to some odd findings if the data is correct.

adsbecxchange has the most US coverage, 2nd place in global
Opensky places 2nd in the US, 3rd in global
FR24 is 3rd in the US*, 1st in global

* FR24 1500 seemed oddly round. Zooming in a few levels let me see 1500 for 2 or 3 zooms and dropped to 1390 at a final level (zoomed into the NE Corridor) Based on this it looks like FR24 might take 1st in the US if they allowed all the flights to appear.

**Note: All based on the plane counts for both shown and total from their Web interfaces to my anonymous browser (not logged in).
An interesting observation here: I usually test the application by teleporting it to LA and FR24 usually reports 4x aircraft there comparing to ADSBx. However, all extra aircraft are grounded and every airborne aircraft reported by FR24 is also available in ADSBx report.
