I guess I'm late to the party on this compact app. Just downloaded this evening.

Does Waze need to be running in the background for this to work?

Are there multiple server choices for the "Server hostname" or just a single choice that begins with W ? I am in the USA.

Thanks to all for more cool stuff :)

You don't have to run waze in the background.

BUT! If everyone were to stop contributing to Waze, the data stream would dry up. If you are benefitting from Waze, contribute to it too!

With the Highway Radar app, as soon as I press "START MONITORING", the box at the lower left corner turns into a red box with a speaker in it and an X, sort of like a mute function. What is that? Nothing seems to happen when I press it.

I'm getting hardly any volume from the app at all. Volume is there, just very low.

I drove with this app + Google Maps today. I think this combo effectively doubles my data consumption rate, which means I probably won't be able to use it since I have a 1GB monthly limit. Will probably just stick with Waze. It doesn't chew thru much data on its own.

That is the "Mute All" button. It will mute all alerts, when multiple are displayed and alerting. It is useful when sources are close to each other, instead of tapping on each alert to mute it individually. If no alerts are displayed and actually alerting, this button does not do anything.

Yeah, someone is going to have to give you some guidance on the server name...

Just published v1.7.1 to the Play Store.

This release fixes a bug about alerts outside of the US and Canada and also applies some cosmetic changes - brighter alert subtext and wider risk color bar.

Also next day after I published 1.7 my SSD kicked the bucket and the latest backup of the application was right after 1.6 release (the alerts history data didn't suffer though). This means that I've rewritten all 1.7 features, so I invite everyone to test them again :).

Are you not using version control on a private hosted repo?

I am. Someone just forgot to git push after 1.7 -- my bad.
Actually almost everything except the Android app itself survived.

Just published v1.8 Beta to the Play Store.
NOTE: This version is pushed to Beta channel and you need to opt-in in order to receive it. Opt-in link: play.google.com/apps/testing/com.highwayradar.app
This version is focused on map improvements — the Map display mode is no longer experimental starting from v1.8.
Here are the main map changes:
  • The map is interactive now (you can drag, zoom, rotate and tilt the map with standard gestures)
  • New map style better optimized for hi-dpi displays
  • Option for automatic zoom when approaching police report
  • Better labels placement on the map
  • Fixed random map rotation when stationary
Besides this there is one more minor change about mute button, which isn't visible now when there is nothing to mute.

Since my car is undergoing ALP installation this week I wasn't able to test this version in real life so I'm publishing it to beta channel with no guarantee of 100% stable work. I'm looking for brave folks who can test it for me and give some feedback =). In order to opt-in to beta channel please use the link in the beginning of this post.
