This just broke: https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/trump-signs-order-to-protect-us-networks-from-foreign-espionage-a-move-that-appears-to-target-china/2019/05/15/d982ec50-7727-11e9-bd25-c989555e7766_story.html?utm_term=.e86a9f886b78

"Amid a deepening trade war with China, President Trump on Wednesday declared a “national emergency” to protect U.S. communications networks in a move that gives the federal government broad powers to bar American companies from doing business with certain foreign suppliers — including the Chinese firm Huawei.

Trump declared the emergency in the form of an executive order that says foreign adversaries are exploiting vulnerabilities in U.S. telecom technology and services. It singles out economic and industrial espionage as areas of particular concern.

The order authorizes the commerce secretary to block transactions involving communications technologies built by firms controlled by a foreign adversary that puts U.S. security at “unacceptable” risk — or poses a threat of espionage or sabotage to networks that underpin the day-to-day running of vital public services."

NO POLITICAL DISCUSSION IN THIS THREAD. GO TO MRGA SOCIAL GROUP FOR THAT. IF YOU CAN'T HANDLE THIS THERE WILL BE CONSEQUENCES. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. I hate having to specify this warning in threads like this, but 99% of the people on this forum are able to abide by this rule in threads like this. I don't want to hear arguments on how threads like this "INSTIGATE POLITICAL DISCUSSION." They do not - you just do not have self control. I'm sorry to say that - I truly am. I hate removing people from threads/issuing infractions/banning people. THE ENTIRE STAFF HATES HAVING TO TAKE ACTION FOR REASONS LIKE THIS. We *HATE* banning people. It's a terrible feeling for us - it ACTUALLY TRULY IS. But this has to be adhered to, especially for threads like this where there's a POTENTIAL for things to get political. By nature this subject is not political. Do not make it into a political thread. Seriously, help us out - please abide by this warning. THANK YOU.

Anyway, so that's what's going on right now regarding this - executive order declaring a national emergency regarding the aforementioned subject above.

So much news happening today, crazy world we are living in gents (and lady - seriously I think we may only have one or two of them here, )...

China has absolutely no regard when it comes to IP. I just don't understand the US companies that manufacture anything in China that has IP they don't want to get out. China sets it all up so they can blatantly steal any and all IP.

Yeah, it’s probably a good call, even if inflammatory, not only because IP is free to be stolen by the Chinese already, but because it’s appears likely that the Chinese government has its own secret back doors built into everything Chinese companies produce. It’s a great idea from their side, as they can counter any sufficient provocation by shutting down our infrastructure (and that of anyone else heavily invested in their equipment). No EMP required.

The downside is it seems like pretty much all the 5G tech is coming from China right now.

Think of all the botnets that are built on top of Chinese products. (security cams, baby cams, ...)

The IP theft is so ridiculous, it's a shame they have gotten away with it for so long.

Isn't there some agreement that companies in China have to make where they HAVE to interact/assist/work for/whatever you want to call it, with the Government of China if requested by the govt?

The best way to counter this is for US security companies and the NSA to gather (but not release) a long list of the exploits/back doors in these products, if they exist. And then one day, just dump all of them on pastebin or reddit. The market will deal with it at that point. The same should go for Chinese companies/3PLA and Cisco, if they happen to be putting backdoors in their products for the NSA to use. Each side needs to keep the other side honest.

I think it's about time for EASA to oversee Boeing and the FAA to oversee Airbus too.

Yes, China requires this and it is to blatantly rip off the IP from these companies. I don't feel sorry for them though, they should know better.

The Great Orange One vs the Red Dragon. Who will evolve victorious?
But seriously, we need some tariffs though as it can get a bit lopsided when it comes to the trade deficit. The product I move is American made, but I think is chinese steel (RVs). As long as I don't have ten of me online, I'm good.

I work with a lot of American companies, run by American families, with American workers, who are being hurt by this in a major way that would beg to differ, however, isn’t this politics? I thought this was not supposed to be discussed here? The thread is not about tariffs.

Dood, did you read the OP?

Please man, PLEASE DON'T KILL MY BRAIN.

If you can't leave politics out of this discussion, please disengage from the thread now.

Nobody has caused any issues with politics in this thread yet. Nobody has caused issues with the Iran thread yet (except Deacon but that's to be expected). Why do we have to make an issue out of something that's NOT AN ISSUE?

WHY GOD WHY!

I didn't feel it was political. It does deal with the trade issues though.

Yes, I read the OP. I said we shouldn’t be discussing politics to RadarSammach after he made a obviously political comment regarding tariffs. Why are you getting mad at me?

I'm not gonna online argue with you. Anyways the trade stuff will affect me, trump declared an emergency to safeguard our networks because of the trade issues which is the core issue in my opinion. Just mentioning the word Trump gets people all riled up so I didn't mention any country names and gave them goofy nicknames instead, chill out dude.

You move American-made networking/communication equipment? Because that's the only way this would affect you.

No, it's not.

If you have an issue with a thread, report it. If you can't handle a thread, IGNORE it. If you can't handle a section, IGNORE it. We paid $15 so you guys have the ability to ignore users, threads and entire forums. Use the tools.

It's simple, nobody here has an issue with this thread but you. And as the thread creator and a staff member, I disagree with your opinion, so please stop discussing this in this thread. Thank you.

No. This has nothing to do with Trump. You mentioned the tariffs, I responded PURELY about the same topic (tariffs) as you. I got scolded and you didn’t. If my opinion is considered politics, surely your inverse opinion must be considered politics as well. I’ll leave the thread now to avoid further conflict.

Yep, my company does, we move portable cell towers for the military in addition to RVs and other stuff.

I disagree that it was a political comment. It was an economic comment. That's all I'm going to say about that in this thread. I appreciate you looking out but there's very specific criteria and a very fine line between what is political and what is not - I don't deem his comments to be political and therefore it's not a problem. I'm not mad at you for speaking up about this stuff - I'm upset that you chose to do it in the thread instead of doing it using the report function or PM - I would have gladly discussed it with you there. Now we have 5+ posts about this non-issue here in this thread.

Your in IT. How do you think this will affect the average Joe? The extra security for networks? I used to do networking but I'm way out of date, c 2011. Think we'll block off China from accessing our bgp routers? Teir 1 networks I think is the term.
