Just curious... was there a tipping point that made you pull the trigger on a dashcam setup?

For me, I had spent a few days browsing r/Roadcam and saw a bunch of insurance scams and sketchy road rage incidents, so I was already doing some research on them.

Then, that same week, my wife and I are sitting in the car at the interchange to get on the highway. There are three lanes: left to get on the eastbound highway, right to go westbound, and center to go straight through into town (south). We were in the center lane to go straight, with a red light, and some guy in a huge SUV is behind us in the leftmost lane laying on his horn. I glance back, and he's trying to cut in behind me to get on the westbound highway. He rolls down his window and starts yelling at me to move up... which I can't do, because I'm basically bumper to bumper with the guy in front (OK, I may have had a little room, but I like to keep a safe distance even when stopped -- never know when some joker is going to rear end you).

Anyway, this gentleman indicates that if I don't let him cut through, he is going to throw his iced coffee at my car. Somehow, he made it through to the right lane -- I think the guy behind me must have backed up and let him in. And he promptly follows through with his threat, landing his extra-large Dunkin squarely on my front passenger side fender, and then speeding off onto the highway.

The wife and I were a bit shaken, but unharmed, and the car was fine after a trip through the car wash (joke's on road rage guy, I have an unlimited car wash deal). But we both agreed that a dashcam would be a timely addition to our vehicle.

The next day, I happened to find a sale on the Roav C1 bundle (with SD card!) at Walmart, so off to the store we went. Been running it ever since. Haven't caught anything quite that exciting, but it's good to know it's there just in case.

I got mine after being pulled for speeding when I wasn't. Cop lost sight of my car and the guy he was after when a semi got in the way for a bit... he should have grabbed the other black sedan but grabbed mine (it was a rental with out of state plates so easy money) after that I wanted a dash camera to be able to have evidence in court if needed. I've caught 3 accidents on camera thus far... and it saved me $1200 dollars when someone reversed into my car at an intersection. she was nice about it at the time, but when she decided that she didn't still want to go out of pocket she told her insurance I rear ended her... dash footage was submitted and her insurance paid the full bill. The cheap cost of the camera is worth every penny when there is an accident , a traffic stop or an altercation with another motorist. I have front and rear cameras in both cars at this point, my parents both have cameras as does my mother in law (and the second day of having hers she had a tractor trailer roll over on the highway right in front of her). when I travel the dash camera comes with me every time.

I got mine after getting sick of saying, “ughhh I wish I had a dash cam,” usually after seeing a driver doing something stupid on the road or a nice detection by my RD that I’d like to share here.

When I first installed a dashcam, it was because of watching radar and laser save videos on the other forum back in 07 and 08 onward and I wanted to show my own encounters over here as well cos I was seeing some serious laser action back then.

Unfortunately, dashcams weren't even for sale anywhere online back then so I had to follow the instructions I saw on another forum back then. This included buying a Sony CCTV camera, a DVR, an audio mic and power couplings etc etc and hooking it all together. It was an extremely crappy video quality and the sound wasn't great either but it did beat trying to attach a camcorder to my dash somehow and trying to keep it charged etc so I stuck with it until I saw Blackvue cameras being used around 2012 and their quality was waaay better so I bought one of those and stuck with the brand since that

Me trying to capture things with my phone, countermeasure and non countermeasure related was getting out of hand so I got a cam to make life easier and have a lot more professional looking videos.

I really like the a119 for the price but I’m mad at myself for cheaping out. I want to upgrade to quality and upgrade to something with dual channel and parking mode.

I originally purchased mine to provide videos on here. However, the value increased exponentially when I was involved in a hit-and-run accident. My insurance company wanted to charge me the $500 deductible; the video proved my innocence and didn't have to pay that. I also provided the video to the police and received a letter a couple months later that I could attend the trial of the person who hit me. He ended up going back to prison because he violated his probation by taking off. I've also gotten out of two stops for ostensibly running a red light. In both of those cases, the cops had a change of heart when I informed the officers that I'd be bringing my video with me to court.

That sounds like a fantastic setup. Reminds me of a post (I think it was on a Slickdeals thread, actually) about a guy who had a similar setup with a GPS speedometer set up in the video frame as well. Said he used it to beat a LIDAR ticket where the cop targeted the wrong vehicle. (My apologies if this was a RDF member!)

Same, especially after I found r/roadcam. Even still, I don't know how many times I've been riding with someone who doesn't run a dashcam and said "too bad you don't have a dashcam!"

I’ll admit.... my original reason for a dash cam was RDF envy. I wanted to share my experiences with undisputed proof.

Now, in addition to my original reason, I appreciate the feeling of knowing I have proof in the unfortunate event of a traffic accident.

Like everyone else I wanted to capture RD videos for the forums. I had gotten by with snapping videos with my phone for a while but one day I was involved in a wreck on the highway. By the time I could exit my car the driver of the other vehicle was jumping over the highway wall down to a side road and running away. Turns out he was a homeless man who had stolen a car. Insurance of the vehicle at fault was unsure how that man ended up behind the wheel and tried to get out of paying me. Luckily I got taken care of in that situation but I said I needed a dual set up so there’s no conversation needed God forbid something happened again

I was driving one day and saw a big meteorite, and I saw some Russian videos of some meteorites. You never know what will happen! You could see Bigfoot! Or a ufo! Probably also all the aggressive drivers flipping me off, I wanted video of it.

I also have a very high quality recorder on my phone lines. Companies always make promises but never keep them

After spending too much time watching Russian dashcam videos on Youtube, I am now completely paranoid and have a dashcam mounted (one week ago now). I still need another one in my other cars, and rear cams, and higher resolution, and, and, (they're coming to take me away to the funny farm soon, I know. . .)

Actually the hardest part was overcoming the fear of taking A-pillars and other parts off to run the wiring and then not being able to get things put back together!
