A proportional response will be done, thousands aren't going to die because of this, don't be melodramatic please.
Given that no one died over the shooting down of the drone, no one should die in the response, whatever it is. An eye for an eye, but if they don't kill any of your troops, you shouldn't kill theirs. If, as the rumors go, it was someone who mistakenly hit a button, then Iran is basically guilty of vandalism. Instead of taking out an equal amount of their stuff, I'd rather just have them cut a check to the US government for the destroyed property so that our government can purchase a new drone.

I said proportional for a reason...

If, as the rumors go, it was someone who mistakenly hit a button, then Iran is basically guilty of vandalism.
The rumor isn't that it was an accident like what you said, but a rogue individual in the military. There's a huge difference between the two.

Yeah but it doesn't really matter. If your property is vandalized by someone representing an organization, you go after said organization for reimbursement. Said organization can then punish that individual, but that's an internal matter.

If this was an accidental pushing of a button or rogue decision why would the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps go on TV and announce that they shot it down and issue a warning to the US? They've denied everything else they've been accused of.

Bringing law based logic into this isn't relevant.

How close was the spy drone to Iran? How close was the spy drone to the United States?

I believe that after the tanker attacks, having a drone in the straight is logical and prudent.
Sounds like you'd understand they might not make it back then.

I’d like to see the next Iranian boat attempting to attack a ship blown out of the water with no publicity and no announcement to the Iranians. A couple of marines on a tanker should be able to take out a small boat with a tow missile. Any country wishing this protection should pay us for it. And a few fighters protecting the drones could fire on any launchers that turn on targeting radar.

Yes. and I also understand that an attack on a aircraft or vessel in that area could be considered an act of war.

That doesn't matter either. If the drone was in or over international waters, then any country's aircraft have equal right to be there, even a hypothetical Swaziland/Lesotho/Bolivian ship, if they could somehow get it there.

Yep, just surround a country, throw up sanctions, build bases around it, then wait for them to throw the "first punch."

Sure, but why is our spy drone messing around Iran? We are escalating like we do for any conflict.

It really does not matter. You can't claim that I am "escalating" a situation if I am sitting on the street (public property) immediately adjacent to your house. You might not like me being there, but there isn't a damn thing you can do about it. If I cross your property line however, that's entirely a different matter.

Complicating the matter is that the Strait appears to be governed by Articles 38 and 39, which has rules that you can only use it when passing through from one international zone to another. It's similar to a road that you are allowed to use for travel, but aren't permitted to stop anywhere along its length (except in an emergency). Some jurisdictions also have rules against just hanging around as a pedestrian with no purpose.

I never thought I'd see people defend Iran, as Americans. But okay.

20 miles North of the Manson Nixon line.
After the faulty intelligence that led the U.S into war with Iraq people are less likely to jump on the "let's go to war because the U.S. never makes mistakes" bandwagon.

Nobody wants to go to war!

And there's a huge difference between "There are weapons of mass destruction in Iraq" and "Iran just shot down one of our drones in international waters."....

What if you blockade my driveway and flies drones around me?

Just pointing out we seem to find ourselves constantly pulled into conflict, while other nations do not. There is a reason for this.

John Bolton is still in denial over Iraq. Stands by the decision.
