WASHINGTON — A U.S. official says an American military team's initial assessment is that Iranian or Iranian-backed proxies used explosives to blow large holes in four ships anchored off the coast of the United Arab Emirates.

The official says each ship has a 5-to-10-foot hole in it, near or just below the water line. The U.S. military team assesses that the holes were caused by explosive charges.

The UAE asked the U.S. to help investigate the damage, which Gulf officials have characterized as sabotage.

The official was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The U.S. has warned ships that "Iran or its proxies" could be targeting maritime traffic in the region, and America has moved additional ships and aircraft into the region.

Ugh. I’ve been bracing for the fallout of installing an extremist hawk like Bolton as the National Security Advisor. Between him and the likes of Stephen Miller, you’ve got so many Wormtongue-esque figures whispering in Trump’s ear, coloring his vision and feeding him what they think he needs to hear so that he orders their bidding done in his name.

Whether it’s instigating trade wars with China or instigating real wars by violating our treaty with Iran and now holding them at gunpoint, these kinds of actions may grab headlines and distract from subpoenas, but I can’t see this kind of continual, unfocused provocations ending well for the world, much less America. When you seek to cow the world by a crass show of force, upending alliances, throwing up a middle finger at diplomatic channels, and generally doing whatever you think will get your tweets the most likes from your followers, you’re writing extremely large checks, and we’re the ones left having to cash them. It’s not clear we can. And the last thing we need right now, with both Russia and China devolving to autocratic dictatorships, is to gamble our own future for temporary political distractions and give them the chance to swoop in and play hero.

The whole thing makes me nervous and frustrated, as I don’t have any great confidence in some sort of genius master plan behind it all. It’s all very crude and ham-fisted and reactionary, and we’re all left sort of biding our time, hoping this erratic chapter of our history book will end without too much fundamental damage to reckon with later.

You're not going to get my thread moved Deacon!

Iran is a stain on this Earth, however.

Iran is a place filled with mostly good people just trying to live their lives, like anywhere.
Oh I have no problem with the people of Iran, they should rise up and overthrow their terrible government which is absolutely working against their best interests.

So yeah, keep this thread on topic - about the escalating situation regarding the US and Iran.

If you find it hard to keep politics out of this section, don't post. There's your warning.

We have by far the most powerful military in the world. Second place is a distant second place. I don’t think they will start a war with us and if we preemptively attack them it should be over before the media can screw it up. However I don’t think this or the last administration would preemptively attack. It’s just not necessary. Besides Iran always causes trouble and has since the late 70s. Nothing new here. If they were truly serious and had any balls they would attack Israel.

I agree however that’s irrelevant. Germany had “mostly good people” too. Just saying.

****, Iran put a bounty on our heads (us soldiers deployed to Iraq) while we were deployed. Imo, we already have been provoked. Their government has a lot to answer for.

I agree with you 100%. We probably should’ve taken them out in the early 80s but we have a problem. We will never be successful at a war again because the media won’t let us. Every war we’ve been in since World War II we could’ve won very easily but the media put a stop to it. So I suggest that we never ever ever ever ever preemptive attack anyone again even if it’s absolutely the right thing to do. We absolutely would’ve lost World War II had today’s media existed back then. As it was Roosevelt had to strictly enforce secrecy on the media back then and it was very difficult.

So while I completely agree with you that Iran is remarkably dangerous and has provoked aggression from us in my opinion, backed by past observations, it’s futile to attack them.

I disagree, I think we should reduce them to a stain on the earth and let their people rise up and create free Iran.

Media has zero control over war. Honestly the msm has very little control over anything anymore.
