So in addition to doing a bunch of R7 Spectre testing this week, I also went out to go retest the R1 and R3 against both the Spectre III and Spectre Elite. I know a couple of you guys also picked up a Spectre III on eBay and were able to detect your R3's which is different from what I saw with the Spectre Elite.

To see what was going on, I went out with 3 R3's and 2 R1's and ran all of them against both the Spectre III and Spectre Elite at standard and max sensitivity levels. I'm able to confirm that yeah, while the detectors are stealth to the Spectre Elite, most of them are detectable by the Spectre III. I could only pick them up at very close range, and there was a little variance between detectors, but it does look like the III is indeed more sensitive than the Elite.

Thanks to @C2S for helping me test and bringing his R3 which we tossed into the testing mix, as well as to Radenso for loaning me their Spectre Elite again!

Every couple of months we see another disappointment from Uniden. Extra range over competition is all nice and bubbly but not being able to pick up lower k1 range / low MRCD alerts and now this. Oh boy.
What else is going on there?

Thanks for the video. @Vortex, in regards to Spectres in VA they have been using IV Elites for nearly 10 years. I don't believe III's were used in VA, or at least not in any significant numbers.

Vortex, et. al

Has anyone considered disassembling the case of their detector and attempting to RF/EMI shield the case like a mini faraday cage concept to keep from signals leaking through the plastic case and then being picked up by the Spectre?

I found some info here on shielding. RF and EM Shielding for Electronics Circuitry - Polycase - Tech Talk

@Vortex In your Uniden R1 and R3 vs. Spectre III and Spectre Elite video you pondered what RDDs were still being used in the prohibited areas. So I did a little social media research on the RCMP in my province, MB. Outside of watching your videos I know nothing about RDDs, but it would seem there is a mix still in use of some with the little shiny metal toggle switch on the front in the middle-top and a couple without. Based on your testing I'll be keeping my R3 and won't be buying an R7, and I'll be crossing my fingers I have a R3 like the first 2 you tested and not leaky sample 3 in your testing!

2016 - It's hard to tell, but it looks like a toggle

2018 - 2 with toggles and 1 where it is missing, but everything else looks like the toggle versions

Queensland, Australia I believe they run Elite's but haven't been seen in a long time, they used to be a pretty regular piece of kit in HWP cars. They might be still used in regional areas but not in South East Queensland.

@Vortex do you happen to remember if that leaky R3 was a newer or older model/serial number relative to the two good R3s? I'm curious, because I had to send my R3 (ser 8A027xxx) in for warranty repair and it looks like Uniden is now sending back a R3 (ser 8A005xxx) and I'm now paranoid.

I don't remember, sorry. I'm still not convinced that serial numbers or build dates have anything to do with it. We have wayyy too small a sample size to make any sort of definite conclusions.
