Pontification.

I do agree there are more emotional kool aid drinking supporters of Uniden. I might suggest there are more daily ER users than you think. A silent group not interested in the constant badgering and hazing by others. I also suggest that there might be large group of V1 users on RDF. Unless provoked hard, they tend to be a classy group, not as engaged in comments like yours. :)

Not much use in speculating on your theory either. Geez.

There is something causing failures and possible failures due to environmental considerations.

Makes sense on R7. I chose to get one early. Been using it almost exclusive past week or so and will continue to work worth it. So far, really like it. Do not have the issues at this time others experience.

I do get frustrated by the BSM chaos compared to others. Today had to deal with a GMC Arcadia for long enough time in a one lane 55mph construction zone, will have to raise up quiet ride above 55 to 70. :) could not get around him when in the split lane construction. BSM is the only frustrating issue. Manageable for the moment.

I said that for no other reason than not everyone chooses to report every time one goes out. In this post others have now talked about their failures with R series. Not sure they all had posted that before. Point is, we all don’t go running out and talk about every time one fails. There could be more out there than what has been reported. No agenda, just a thought.
Hmm me thinks your comment about Uniden and kool aid drinkers seems to be a non classy move.

What do guys in WI know about heat?!? :p My relatives in MI complain when it gets to 80 degrees outside...lol.
hey, we go from -40 (-60 or more with windchill, but that doesn't affect electronics) to 110 in this state, almost every year. We have high humidity, so I would take Arizona hot over Wisconsin hot most days.

I'm not convinced that it's the heat that causes problems with these detectors as the temperature in a car is usually well within the storage temp of our devices. Manufacturing defects are where I default on the source of any failed unit, but it's not very common.

Speaking of class acts; @UnidenSupport doesn't disappoint. :)

I like the use of qualifiers in your messages. Things like, "I'm not convinced..." are exactly what we need more of. It adds a lot of credibility in my opinion.

Saying "i'm not convinced..." is a perfectly reasonable response to an argument with no basis, particularly when you have a good amount of evidence and research showing it is not the case.

My R1 turned 1 year old at the end of March. I’ve not had really any Ka alerts for over a month until 2 this past weekend- but I’ve had plenty of 24.198 Honda alerts. I don’t think I’ve been around Ka sources much.

It’s concerning hearing reports over the years of detectors going dead without any visual or audible warning. My old passport 4500 if I remember displayed a malfunction code and the X50 had a malfunction code as well like service required or something.

I wonder what the failure rate on these units are like.. hmmmm
I can tell you, terrible. I purchased my R1 when they had been out for about 6 months or so, my 4th unit just quit a couple weeks ago. My first one quit detecting after 6 months and a replacement was sent. That one lasted a just slightly longer. I was out of warranty but customer service sent me a third one under warranty but said that was it as far as warranty goes. That one quit two weeks ago. I take excellent care of my units and don't leave them to bake in the sun. I told the rep that it's total bullshit that you build the longest range detector out there but the quality is junk. I'm debating on not sending mine in for repair and buying something else. The something else is the big question. There are only a few companies I haven't tried but for the most part it's been there done that. Radenso has been crossing my mind. The only thing is that k band and laser are never used in my area. I shut the k band off and the r1 never went off unless it was LE. Super range and dead quiet otherwise. It saved me more times than I can count. I'm spoiled and want the same performance. I'm not going to be paying for a repair every 6 months though.

If you don't need K band, a Redline O or Magnum STi would work very well for you with their hot Ka band performance!

Thanks for the info. I only would run k band very seldom when you're up north in tiny little towns with a local. In the very beginning I didn't hear that great of things about the new Redline but supposedly there were some updates that greatly improved it? I was running a Max 360 at that time before I sold it and bought the Uniden. Excellent when it's working. I know myself and others have questions about the new Whistler CR97. I know it's a Whistler but I've heard nothing but good things and I use to run one back in the day and it worked great and was bullet proof. I don't mind spending the money on a quality product but it has to be a quality product. Thanks

Unfortunately, the newer Redline (EX) does not have the range of the Redline O (original). Rumor has it that there are some updates available for the EX that will improve performance though not to the level of the Redline O. In those little towns up north you are not as likely to run into a lot of BSM polluters so the Redline O should serve you well. The Redline O is not manufactured any more but you can probably pick one up from the forum classifieds. Some members may sell their Redline (or Magnum) because they have too much BSM pollution to deal with and the Redline is not very good at that in large urban areas with a lot of traffic.

I wanted to let everyone know that I contacted Uniden about my fourth R1 failure. They told me after my third failure, which was out of warranty, that they would replace it but I was on my own after that. I spoke with a customer service representative and told him that four failures in two years was unacceptable and I would be taking my business elsewhere. I was put on hold for about 10 minutes and then asked if I could be contacted later that day. I received an email offering me a free R3 upgrade for my troubles and I didn't have to return my defective R1. The only thing I thought was a little petty but not a big deal was I had to pay $10 in advance for shipping. I still think they could have been able to take care of the shipping but it's only $10 for a new R3. My question is does Uniden have a high failure rate with the R1 but not the R3? This also may have just been a ploy to make me think I was really making out well because of a more expensive detector being offered. If this R3 fails down the road I'll know the answer. I could technically send in the R1 for $78 and have it repaired and put it in my 3rd vehicle. It looks like I'm staying with Uniden for a little longer now. I just thought id share that story.

I would have demanded a new R7 :)

I have 4 R1's and all 4 work perfect and are killers! My first R1 was bought from @BestRadarDetectors back in Feb. 2018, and never comes down unless I'm testing or updating it. It works just as good as it did from day 1! It works so good in fact that I got 3 more of them and they are all also kicking @ss and taking names! I must be lucky I guess! I've been pretty damn lucky with all of my detectors except for my RX65. It was a dud from day one and still is! My Redline-O had the dreaded cold solder issue-twice! But since then it's been a monster!

I have two R1's, now 1 R1 sold the other one, 1 R3 and a fairly new R7.
I live in central Florida and all of these detectors are permanently mounted and in the sun. I don't take them down
I have had zero issues with heat or screen burn in or any other issues
And no, I'm not drinking any cool aid. Just reporting the facts

In a way you are making out getting a new RD out of warranty. You have nothing to lose by taking it. Better to do that than send the other one in and getting a refurb. My R1 was from the first lot and it has been bulletproof. I run it every day. No, I don't leave it up in a hot windshield. The four failures you experienced would pi$$ me off too. But your alternatives are mediocre Escorts (mostly rehashed M4s) or their 360ci remote which is very good but very expensive. You can't get a V1 they are out of stock with no end in sight. You could try a Radenso Pro M.

I know its a mix of a Bell and an Escort but I've heard very good things about the Cobra Duel Pro 360. I've seen several comparisons with the top RD's on the market, which included the R3, R7, Max360C, and the Pro M, only to see the Cobra chosen as the best. There were many factors, range, performance, features, and price. I had pretty much decided on a Radenso product until Uniden stepped up and owned it. The R3 came today brand new in a sealed box. Only time will tell.

My original R1 I bought from BestRadarDetector a little over 2 years ago and it lasted 6 months. I swear every 6 months one fails. I love the detectors performance, don't get me wrong, and I may have just been the misfortunet one to get 4 bad ones. When everyone still had land lines for home phones I always used Unidens cordless phones and they were the best you find and I just assumed their quality would carry over.
