Hi all,
Anybody have any idea why a Uniden DFR7 would be pick up any MD State Troopers? I have been using this for months, and have checked all settings, but it has never picked up a Maryland State Trooper radar (or whatever they use). I even passed in front of one standing outside his car with the gun right at me, nothing.
I am going to upgrade to a RD with arrows. Any suggestions on the best one (one that will definitely pick up the MD State Troopers)?
Thanks,
JazzyOne

If they're outside the car I'm guessing that laser was being used. Although, like other detectors, yours has a laser sensor, they really aren't that useful. To detect that, and defeat it, you will need to look at a system dedicated to defeating laser

So you are saying that no dectors out there work for lasers? I am sure they are using a laser, but I thought since I had laser dection, it would work.

It's a radar detector not a cop detector. The units you ran into did not have their radar units on at the time and they were either doing nothing or using lidar. When I drove though MD I encountered lidar from them and zero radar.

Some detectors are good at picking laser such as the V1 and some are not. The laser beam is extremely tight so when they aim for your license plate the detector most of the time won't even alert and even if it does he has your speed and you're getting stopped.

MD Troopers use DragonEye & other Lidar guns...can you describe what the gun looked like ? Could be either Radar or Lidar, were there glass lenses on the front of the device ?

So how do you detect lasers? Or what unit can you buy to defeat lasers? MD Troopers are my biggest issue.

It does technically work, some better than others, but for all intents and purposes, laser detection on a radar detector won't save you. There have been exceptions to this, but it really is rare enough to be considered non-existent.

I wish I could. He was on the on ramp shooting down the highway, I was getting on the exit and passed right in front of him as he shot up the highway. So the detector was literally three feet away from the gun, but I was paying more attention to not hitting him then i was at the gun. Just figured the thing would go off.

Please look at the other sections of the forum. It's all there
Thanks. I will dig around as I really want something with arrows anyway.

The ALP system is probably the best. TMG also offers a more affordable option that works well enough against all but the most sophisticated laser guns. They are still actively working on improving the performance of the TMG system, so that may change for the better.

If it was laser, THE very best Lidar defense is AntiLaser "Priority" model, it is the only Model that consistently neutralizes the dangerous DragonEye Lidar !

@jazzyone
* Sheesh - just saw your #9 Post...sounds like the Trooper was shooting people "in the back" then, you'll need both Front & Read laser protection in MD !!!

Thank you. One more quick question. Can laser be used from inside a car with windows up. Most of these troopers sit on side of road and not out of thier car. I would think they are using radar, but my DFR7 isn't picking them up. I doubt every one I have passed over the course of 5 months has been sitting there for the fun of it.

I don't think the TMG will effectively save him in MD. Perhaps in the future it will but, for now I believe his best defense is ALP.

Laser can be used inside or outside, but the operator has to hold it up to his eyes unlike with a radar gun.

Yes, the Lidar can shoot through glass at the cost of having reduced maximum range. (cuts range distance by ~50 %)

Thanks. So what do most people do here about lasers? Spend $1k-$2k for good jammers? I just figured my DFR7 sucked and was going to spend $600 for a good RD with laser capability.

Jazzy, if you confront lidar on a regular basis, you're going to need to re-think your defense strategy.

As everyone has said if you are facing lidar (and MD does use it) A RD is not the correct tool, the beam of a lidar gun may only be 1-2 feet wide at a distance of 1000ft and they are usually targeting low on the car so unless they happen to be aiming it just right your RD may not catch it. If it does happen to catch it, its going to alert and you will hit your brakes but it will be too late, the guns can get your speed in less than 1 second in many cases, by the time the RD goes off and you react and hit the brakes the officer will already have you at your original speed. The RD's main function is radar detection which you will want, cause radar is definitely used, for Laser you will want to look a ALP (antilaser priority) or TMG those systems can defend against the laser until you have slowed down. also realize that a lot of police will sit and just do paperwork or will be watching traffic for people weaving, using their phones, or whatnot and may not be using radar/laser so there may be nothing to pick up. Waze is a good option too as you can get alerts from drivers that are ahead of you about police. most folks here on RDF run a RD and waze as a minimum, many also add in ALP or TMG to cover laser traps that are not reported on waze. Do a little reading up here and feel free to ask questions if they arise.
