So you’re planning on using it essentially as a base station out of your apartment? I’m sure others will appreciate using a quality radio for transmission :)

Inevitably it'll go in my car. But I need to master it's features before I start driving around with it so it'll be a base station for a little while. I'm working through the manual about an hour a night. I'm usually three vodkas in after an hour so no point in reading any further as it's unlikely I'd remember anything. #StrivingForPerfection

The unit comes with the head extension separation but you can use a regular cat5 Ethernet for a mic extension with a $5 coupler. I’m running mine with a cheap CB speaker I got at a ham fest as well. I don’t have a dc noise filter on the power line but when I ask everyone says they can’t hear the alternator at all. ($30 saved)

What I do is just sit in the parking lot with it. Hitting the repeater with low power, the battery can go all night.

Maybe we can figure out how to get on dstar.

All right! Icoms are not the easiest to use right out of the box but they are good radios. Congrats. and 73 NE5XT

Congrats!
The 5100 is very user friendly with touchscreen controls and the menu drill downs are pretty straightforward if you take the time to scroll through & learn their positions. I have 3 - 2 mobile & 1 fixed, plus a compact 4100 version in my commute car. This radio is definitely one of the best and most preferred by amateur radio aficionados.

DSTAR interest faded for me quickly -prefer HF. However, I do use the dual band receive frequently. On the left is where I monitor my favorite local UHF repeater and simplex, on the right is where I scan. Scans vary depending on if in marine, road trip, known commute, air traffic areas, storm situations, event volunteer, etc.

Many people mod their units for marine band transceive use on the coast. I spend a lot of time kayaking the mangroves in Florida when I get the chance and use one of my mobiles (not modded) to monitor channel boat traffic, inter coastal and bay traffic nearby before and after put-in. Many 5100s in use by RACES teams down there it seems. I use an ID-51 and marine band HT when on the water.

Once thought I would never use the BT features but added anyway. The BT headset works great.... and the Android app is OK - more of a novelty or for playing around when bored with extra time (evermore a rarity).

My eye is on a rack mount for this radio plus a IC7300 to clean up one of my work areas. This combo is great for my office station next to the computers/monitors, other signal intercept radios, scanners, You know the things to help distract you when bored with actual desk work LOL

Let us know if you need help choosing antennas, mounting configs, etc.
I do recommend NMO for mobile antenna mounts and dual-battery (+/- solar) for any dedicated mobile systems. Saves headaches with modern car DC sensitivities, signal hums, and dealer service center perceptions plus you can use free of worry about draining the primary vehicle battery (as long as you use a good charging / battery isolator - i.e. West Mountain Radio Epic PWRgate). The AUX battery is great for powering cameras, security systems, trackers, APRS, mobile WiFi systems, etc in vehicles & boats.

Radio on...
