So my Beltronics RX65 that I bought new about 4 years ago for a secondary vehicle has spent the last 6 moths in the glove compartment. It worked great, it just was getting a bit long in the tooth. I need to use it in one of my vehicles now. I have a Invisicord that was designed for a V1 and BT LE module hardwired in that vehicle that was not in use. I saw Vortex tested power cable cross compatibly, and V1 power cables should work fine on Escort/Bel. It fired right up, no problems there.

I drive the car for 2 days and hear a strange tone out of the RD and “SELFCAL” is displayed on the screen for about 4-5 seconds. I thought that was strange and immediately googled it and looked over a bunch of old threads mostly pertaining to slightly different messages like “selfcal4” and messages saying to service the unit. To be clear, I did NOT get those messages. So I figured I would wait and see if it happened again.

The next day, I’m driving in a K heavy area and I noticed the detector is silent. I immediately drive over to my testing area, the Home Depot. I parked in front of the Home Depot and the RD is silent. I turn the RD off, I turn it back on, and instantly it goes crazy with K band alerts. I decided to try the reset sequence for the detector. I then continued to drive away. Later in the day, while at a stop light I got the “SELFCAL” message once again, immediately followed by K band alerts that the RD was probably missing right before the self calibration. Yet later in the day I pulled into another parking lot that has a lot of K band, and again the RD was silent until I restarted the unit.

Is this thing a paperweight?

It's done. I don't know if Escort will even service it anymore.

Well I wouldn’t want to pay Escort to service it, I was hoping someone could advise me on how I could service it. If there’s a common failure point that’s known about that could be physically repaired, or some magical combination of button presses, or some magical incantation I could use to make it work right...

I am afraid it is a paperweight! IIRC they will not service them anymore. Maybe you should check e-bay for a Magnum. It is much hotter than an RX-65 and it will do better with BSM with TSR + Auto. It won't be like an R series or Pro-M though. A 980 or 985 would be good too but not so much with BSM.

I have better RDs, but not enough for all the vehicles. I mostly use a V1 now with V1 Driver. I just didn’t want to buy another RD for this vehicle unless I had too. I’m going to open it up and have a look around. I can’t stand to just throw things away unless they no longer were serving their purpose.

Yeah I’ve been considering that. I have another thread asking some questions about that. I was really hoping to hold out until Radenso comes out with a new RD with arrows and then do the RD shuffle and give all my vehicles an upgrade. As far as it not serving a purpose, it worked fine for me. 0 tickets in the 4 years I used it.

Took it apart. Not much going on here. I don’t see anything obviously wrong. Horn is secure, solder looks fine, not cracked, caps are fine no dust. Anything else I should look for?

My Vector940 went that way last year, started with the selfcal and calfail messages (and once it had one of those errors it was silent until powercycled) and then eventually it started with service required messages. Not worth fixing.
