I like my max 2, got it on sale for 300 bucks. They discontinued and brought it back think now the regular is 400 but the auto lockouts are nice and filtering is as decent as can be with all these bsm cars.

You didn't say what state you're in. Without knowing makes it sound like you have mrcd since you can't use an r3. In that case, pony down the what 4-500 and get the pro m

300 was enough for me, but really, one ticket and it's paid for. By the time you count your insurance going up, points, having tickets on record, etc....

Range of a R3 in Arizona would be outstanding. Not sure how the low K band would be handled, but Ka and normal K would be some kinda long range. Pro M would be the best for you if you have to deal with it constantly.

I'm actually not all that impressed with the KA detection range on my R3, my STi-R usually sniffs KA out at greater distance.

STiR is no slouch on range. The R3 should be as good or a little better. The problem with the STiR is almost no BSM filtering.

I'm with @OBeerWANKenobi on this one, being in AZ with a $400 budget, I would jump on a Uniden R3 or find a little more scratch for the Radenso Pro M then run Waze on a mobile device with whichever one you decide to purchase.

A very important thing to remember, for anybody that tends to exceed the PSL, a Radar Detector is more of an investment than just a car accessory. A $400 budget is a great budget to invest in some real useable protection.

Yeah, Canada I knew was lower range, forgot all about Redflex being in AZ. I thought that there was some law that passed forbidding the speed cameras, but I see that has all been changed again for the worse.
Taking all of that into consideration, I think I'd go with the Pro-M as a first choice and the R7 as a second choice. I know both exceed your budget but Redflex detection seems prudent. It'll be a while before any good R7 deals show up but every once in a while a used Pro-M comes up at a reasonable price.

@drtoddw nailed it ^^^^.

If the discount is REALLY good, the R7 should be on shelves in best buy on Monday. It will go low enough in frequency. That being said, so will the Pro M. Also, if they are fixed locations, most GPS detectors will warn you because they have a fixed location camera database. The biggest reason some of the Canadian guys need the good MRCD MRCT detection is because they run mobile traps up there.

Just found a Valentine 1 for sale locally for $125, I just emailed him asking for the serial number.... Any thoughts? Worth picking up? Also, I've heard V1's are a bit chatty, is this true?

Thanks!

I just sold my 9500ix, loved the GPS and auto lockout . In the same boat looking for a new RD with good range and BSM filtering. The DFR9 for $199 is my frontrunner. Trying to figure out why the R3 is worth twice that.

I don't have one, but really wouldn't mind getting one. Howerver that being said, I think the price for a used one that you can update and run an app on your smart phone seems to me a good deal. Maybe a V1 user can interject.

Looks like the $199 price was for the weekend only.

Just checked, back up to $329 on that site.

LOL....yes, can I help you? ;)

@FineVisionz that could be a great deal or an awful one. All depends on what the serial shows. But the vast majority of used V1 deals out there are poor to terrible. The general public knows the V1, but they have no idea that it’s changed so dramatically over time, so they constantly overpay for used units. The people selling it sometimes know this and take advantage of the buyer’s ignorance, but I’m willing to bet a lot of times the seller is just as ignorant and all they know is it goes off too much and they want it gone.

If it’s current or nearly current, and the V1 is the right choice for you, then it’s a great deal. If it doesn’t have it already, you’ll want to order stuff like a hardwire and the BTLE dongle from VR. An upgrade could cost as little as $79 ($204 total), which would put you way ahead of the curve. Or it could be $289 ($414 total) which wouldn’t make any sense.

Right now VR is not offering new detector sales or the $289 upgrade for very old units (where they just ship you a whole new package as a full replacement). It could just be a temporary components supply shortage, but there’s somewhat reasonable speculation it’s actually because they’re gearing up for a new revision. If the detector you found for sale is current or nearly so, then it’s probably still worth picking up regardless. They’re still offering the $79 upgrade to get current, and if it turns out they do release a new revision shortly, then the upgrade price will be higher than that but will still probably put you ahead of the curve. Hard to say for sure.

Once you get the serial number from him, plug it in at Radar Detector Upgrades | Valentine One | Radar Detectors and share what it says.

What kind of thoughts are you looking for? It doesn't sound like for your needs an R1 is a great option. You said you generally just flow with traffic, so you don't need some sort of crazy range, and the R1 lacks GPS capabilities for Quiet Ride speeds and locking out stationary falses. Your best bets at a max of $400 are going to be something with "good enough" range and are fairly quiet to BSMs, like a used Pro M or V1. I love a V1, but a Pro M has better BSM filtering. If you can get a Beltronics GT360 for the right price, allegedly they're good with good BSM filtering as well. I think they've been discontinued IIRC, not 100% sure, but you should still be able to find them somewhere.

Or stick it out for two or three weeks and see what happens with VR before making a decision?

Just to conclude, I ended up with getting the R3 from BB. I went over budget and hopefully worth it. Thank you to the people on here giving their advice, very helpful.
