According to my best guess math there are about 18,300 unique profiles currently on this forum. Some of them could be repeat registrations using different email addresses after leaving and starting over.....but even if not, I'm guessing that's a drop in the bucket of the market that radar detector companies are seeking to sell their product to. If the new R7 was purchased by every member of this forum for $599 it would gross Uniden $11,000,000. After costs associated with manufacturing, R and D and advertising, it's pretty obvious that while this group is incredibly fanatic about the products, in order to survive the detector companies have to find a way to appeal to the larger market, especially if they don't sell other products like Uniden.

I'm sure that Valentine has his own ways of controlling overhead differently than the other guys because of his total control, but still, he's got to hit the non enthusiast market to survive right? Realistically, if he's asking $400, using the same numbers he's at $7,320,000 minus overhead. His upgrade revenue would certainly help, but I'd love to know cost to manufacture vs selling price. Plus with no "new models" relative to the other guys he really has to capture his fan base to stay loyal with the upgrades.

Have a look at it this way.

Now I have no idea what world wide radar detector sales are. But I ll just throw a number of 1,000,000

Say VR has 1% market share that would be 10,000 V1 sold world wide which would $4,000,000 in gross sales no idea how many employees he has of how much they get paid but say 10 employees at 100k each. 1M in salary. Since he has been in business for so long with the same product. His r$d costs are pretty much nil now. Even if his material costs is $100 per detector. Mike would have $2M to pay rent and taxes.

Add in upgrade money and sales from accessories. I’m sure mike is healthy in the green each year.

These are just wild numbers I threw out. Would be cool if someone who actually had an idea of what the market really is to set us straight.

thanks

for all the fish

Is there really a reason to call?
That kind of attitude keeps manufacturers away from forums, and makes them unwilling to share any information...

Say VR has 1% market share that would be 10,000
Based on V1 app downloads alone which totals roughly 15,000-20,000; I'd say that number is much higher. Just a data point. :)

While I posted that comment in jest, and I am not disagreeing with you, I have to ask, why not?

They are a company that basically sells one product. If your not selling your 1 product and no one is calling to ask why or when it will be back in stock, as the business owner, I would be concerned.

Also, on that point, if showing interest in a companies products by asking them when I can buy it displays an attitude that keeps them away from the forums, or interacting with their customers, should we really be buying anything from them?

I guess I can always call to ask about K band muting and slyly slip it in :)

Besides, the management team might have given the phone people permission to divulge more information..

Dammit, I just want a new V1!

Sorry I meant those numbers as yearly sales. I have always wonder what VR sales numbers are from year 1 of operation. Just because of their interesting business model

I'll take a bet that SOME of those downloads were from people who thought their phone would turn into a V1 just from the app alone!

This is actually what made me very interested in Valentine as a company. They dont have varying degrees of what they produce to hit certain price points. They dont dumb down their product to offer less range etc. They have 1 product that they put their name on and its the best they have to offer.

Story time: I have a friend who is a damn fine mechanic and does alot of other jobs car wise. He recently got into painting as a side gig and he has a hard time knowing when to stop at a certain level of finished product. He just has a hard time as a perfectionist letting something go out of his shop that isnt perfect. his product needs to be the best because its a reflection of him and his work.

So back to Valentine, This isnt a company that produces radios and has a side gig of Radar detectors. Its very much a company that produces one product and you get the best of what they develop. Now that the competition has caught up i hope to see Valentine step up and best the market.

VR isn’t any company. Before you make assumptions and demand your rights as a consumer, listen to the people here who have experience with VR bc they are a small company that has shown to be sensitive at times. We just got a crumb of info. about an update people have been waiting 10+ years for, thats how they operate, i dont think you want to piss these ppl off or even risk it.

Lol remember this:

I actually wanted to buy one so I could compare with my R7 as the R7 is my first “arrows” detector and when I went to pull trigger on V1, it’s out of stock.

Just thought the timing was a bit odd.

I did call and the woman I talked to basically made it sound like they just ran out of parts and there is really nothing new coming.

She made it seem as if V1 is greatest thing on planet and they have best circuitry and no one else is any where close to as good.

She said it will be a couple weeks before they have it back in stock. I really don’t get the feeling that any improvements are being made to the V1 soon.

Made it seem more like Radenso hit the nail on the head and V1 is left scrambling to find a new manufacture for certain parts...

X2! Exactly what I got from my phone call with them early last week and dealing with VR for 27 years!

I highly doubt anything major will be modified with this next run of units (no additional range, no added features, no additional capabilities) IE the next run will just be a restock run and not rate additional older versions being added to the upgrade list. Their is an additional rumor that the display could change, but again, that is also just another unsubstantiated rumor.

I was figuring there was nothing new, but if there were, I felt it was mostly cosmetic... as in a new display. Looks like Jon's guess is probably the most accurate.. an actual problem with sourcing existing parts... Still seems crazy it would take a month and that they hadn't been better prepared for something like this. Especially since they rarely make a change to the V1.

There's old saying about a man who owns one gun,

He has that already, V1 is an iconic name in the non fanatic market. Even down here, I see more V1's on mid to high end cars than anything else.

I did in a way. I was using the Uniden section as a sample base since we can't go poll the general public, even thought that would be awesome to do.
I don't think the Uniden forum is a source of rational analytical thinking on detectors. Whenever I go in there I always trip over the confirmation bias.
Just look at the ravings over a detector that hasn't even been released yet.

The BMW CCA website and Roundel magazine are still full of V1 ads :)

But Still no GPS built in. Wonder why? Keep cost down maybe?
Because Escort is suing every detector manufacturer that has GPS lockouts built into the detector. Valentine gets around that with 3rd party phone apps that Escort can't do squat about.

So, IF there is a new V1 coming out, I wonder if there is an open place on the PCB for a GPS chip that could be added in an update in the future or if there is one already there just waiting to be activated once the GPS patent has expired.

That might require an "open place" in Valentine's manifesto as well. Then there's the changes to the website, and... ;)
