Since it's a new year, and a new forum platform (XF2 might as well be, compared to XF1), we figured we'd update this thread and beautify the system a bit. We do also have a couple rather substantial changes being announced here as well so be sure to read this entire post for details! Some of this thread has been spliced in with the old one where relevant.

Anyway, the first major change we are announcing here is the change to the available Premium Membership plans/the pricing for the annual plan. There are a few reasons for this, such as preventing people from just donating $1 and being able to take advantage of all of the abilities a Premium Member gets, but we won't get into that. What you need to know regarding this is there are now only two plans available for Premium Memberships - a yearly subscription for $15/year (annually recurring), and the lifetime Premium Membership for $35.

Second, when we host official RDF Raffles and Giveaways, they will now be exclusively for Premium Members only. This is how we operated this last year's raffle and barring the issues mentioned above regarding the $1 donations, it worked exactly how we wanted it to. Being a community forum/website funded entirely by donations/Premium Membership subscriptions, it makes complete sense to limit these events to those who support us financially. I've been long thinking of ways to better reward our Premium Members - this change is perfect for such an act.

Third, we made a couple changes to the way Premium Membership upgrades look. This actually takes care of a few issues we commonly have with new members, such as by educating newly registering members with some information about our rules system - i.e. access to the Classifieds section - and sparks interest about promotions etc - while they are registering (since apparently *nobody* reads our rules anyway)... so, when registering for an account, a user may now choose between these options:

114755

Likewise, for currently registered members, the upgrades page now has these two upgrades displayed similarly on it:

prem1yr.pngpremlife.png

The above images may change based on features/functions we add/remove to the Premium Membership system - so be sure to check out the upgrades page to know the latest of what is included in a Premium Membership.

This may look like a crazy paywall or something like that but don't worry, it's not - RDF is still completely free and ad-free and the above is only related to the Premium Membership system.

Lastly, soon we'll be announcing a change to the way we operate the charity/charity donation functions of the website (mainly in reference to when we run raffles) - with the addition of something we're calling The RDF Compassionate Care Fund. I'm still ironing out a few of the details/setting up the backend of the system (it's essentially going to be a completely separate funds account), but let me give you guys a quick rundown of what we'll be doing...

Every year when we hold a raffle/giveaway, we donate 50% of the proceeds to charity. This is great, however every now and then we come across a member (such as, most recently, myself relating to Tink's chemo treatment) who has a situation where they could use some help. And this community, being such a caring community, usually ends up providing some support one way or another. Again, donating to larger charities is something we're really proud of doing, however being able to help out our own members in a similar manner is something that would be so much more beneficial and rewarding to the community. So what we're going to do is instead of donating that 50% to a large charity each year, we'll be putting it into the soon to be announced RDF Compassionate Care Fund. Additionally, we'll have the fund available for receiving donations throughout the entire year as well (as a separate, always available donation drive with no goal). As previously stated, I'm still ironing out some details and setting the system up, mainly relating to the criteria/guidelines - like what needs to happen to be able to access the fund (i.e. who and for what reasons can the fund be accessed), how the community decides if a cause is worthy of being helped out by the fund (i.e. fund donors will have a say in this, etc), how to prevent fraud, so forth and so on (and before the naysayers attempt to kill this idea, please save your breath - we understand that it's not going to be "simple" - but it's doable and it's a very very good idea so we will be going forward with it)... But yeah, these are the general details regarding this idea/what we'll be announcing soon relating to this. It's just another thing that sets this community apart from the others!

So that's really it as far as the current updates/changes to the Premium Membership and Donation system goes. Feel free to ask questions/etc relating to any of this here in this thread!

And now with some previously provided information, as well as details on how you can become a Premium Member or make a Donation...

So a while back when talking about premium memberships/donations, we kept good track of our incoming donations/outgoing expenses, which was put into a balance sheet available to everyone who has ever contributed financially to RDF. With the new way we are doing things, this is now back and will be updated regularly!

Each month we will have a donation campaign created based on the upcoming expenses due at the end of the month. These numbers vary based on the month because some things are billed to us quarterly/annually as well as monthly, but either way you will now be able to see the breakdown of the places we are using donations/premium membership subscription revenue at. Again, these will all be detailed each month when the new donation campaign is created for that specific month - and you can see the details and breakdown of charges in the description of each donation campaign.

For any month that receives more than the target donation amount, those funds will be rolled over into the next month.

The current month's donation campaign is also tracked in the sidebar of the forum.

So with all this said, donating/grabbing up a premium membership is easier than ever!

To make a donation, go here:
https://www.rdforum.org/index.php?dbtech-donate/
To purchase a premium membership, go here: https://www.rdforum.org/index.php?account/upgrades

As always, thanks to everyone who has ever provided us with support! It's because of you that we're able to keep this place completely ad free (and it will stay that way forever) as well as provide various services/features/functions that many other forums do not offer.

Feel free to ask any related questions in this thread or via PM!

Thanks again!

UPDATE (May 6, 2019):
Premium Memberships can now be gifted to other members - you can gift overtly or gift anonymously as well. To gift a Premium Membership to someone, head to the account upgrades page - here: https://www.rdforum.org/index.php?account/upgrades - and go to the bottom and you will see a block where you are able to gift to people.

UPDATE (June 6, 2019): TAXES ARE GONE! As of today all taxes have been removed from all payments towards RDF donations, memberships, services and etc. I've been thinking of a way to deal with taxes and finally thought of one (they will be handled at the end of the year (in a slightly different manner) instead of on individual transactions), so they are gone! What you see is what you pay.

Is it possible to have a different color banner for lifetime premium member? I went to purchase the lifetime again and old age is kicking in as I already have lifetime. It will let me purchase an annual but not another lifetime.

Yes, the new theme stuff will have this as well as a different colored banner for preferred vendors/MFGs vs normal vendors/MFGs.

And if anyone has any suggestions of additional stuff they'd like to be given as a Premium Member, let me know - I'm always looking for extra stuff to give to Premium Members.

Maybe a Lifetime Member banner... I'm silly enough that I would keep purchasing the annual premium just to get the extra banner, even that as 'extra stuff' would be enough for me. There is a reason the military wears ribbons on their uniform.

You joke now, we have people hit limits all the time.

Hell, look how many PAGES of PMs I have:

Do you still have a personal life?? Haha! Maybe brew some beer in the background for yourself. It might be ready by the time you've finished sifting through the workload. I reckon I should probably stop posting now and let you get back to it.
I like the membership idea by the way.

I haven't had a personal life since 2015, and I don't plan on having one again, it was such a terrible decision,...

For this well thought out Forum to be as big and around for this long to be Ad free is a great accomplishment plus speaks volumes about the Forum’s Community Support and your management of RDF!

I'm just the sysadmin, like I said it's a group effort - including the community itself!

Would agree that there should be some sort of additional benefits to being a lifetime vs 1-yr. Nothing fancy.

Thanks for the announcement, and took the plunge on the premium. Its been almost a year since I've been on RDF, and probably time I should realize I need to put a little skin in the game...

Signed up for lifetime. Not necessarily because of the benefits offered but because I value the information that has saved me money in tickets!
Thanks, and that's generally what we're hoping for/generally why we created Premium Memberships to begin with - to help support the forum's finances (same thing as the donation drives do) while giving some extra perks in the process.

@xydrine not sure if this is the correct place to inquire about this, but when I attempt to embed videos into threads I create, I get an error message, "oops we ran into a problem." If I try to attach the video, I get, "The uploaded file is too large for the server to process." I see with a premium membership the total attachment size limit is 10 GB. The video at the moment I am trying to upload is 535 MB. I have another video that's 88 MB and it uploads fine. I also embed a video a week or so ago that was 173 MB with no issues. The videos are all MP4 extension if that helps. I can upload the videos the Youtube way, but I prefer to embed them due to the compression Youtube does. Thank you in advance for any information you can provide on this.
