Hi there, I'm new to this forum. Just wondering why I can't find much information on the Whistler Z31R+ detector. I ordered one about a week ago because it also had GPS. I figured it would be better than my 6 year old cheap Cobra. Anybody have any idea how good or bad this unit is? What it would be compatible to? Thanx

@TroyB, I am not too familiar with the Whistler Z31R+. I think Whistler sells the Z series a lot at auto parts stores like Autozone. As far as how it compares to other Whistlers and other detectors, I am not sure. I think it is Whistler’s entry level GPS model. @Bossdad71 @Kennyc56 , do y’all know anything about the Whistler Z31R+ ?

No, I don't have any experience with that unit. @Bossdad71 might be able to help out on this.

hello, first of all thank you for joining the forum. I have not used the detector that you mentioned. However, I have used a AutoZone detector and compared it to the cr97, or the 95 i believe @Kennyc56 has too, and the over all range is better. I filtering wise the 95 and 97 is a little chatter out of the box, but I think that is because they made them more sensitive, but it is able to be quieted down some.

Will it give you better protection than your Cobra you had for six years, ummm imo it will still be close, but maybe a bit.

As good as the CR95 and 97 are, I would get one of them. I own both of them, and they are equal on performance. I would give the nod to the CR97 however since it can be updated. BTW, They will both murder your Cobra!

That's the only way I roll Mike! The truth will set you free! Like we keep saying, if Whistler would just fix a couple of glitches these detectors are in the same class with the best detectors I've ever seen!

I like my CR97 and I feel safe in it at 10 to 15 above psl in the proper road conditions. I have an older XTR series and the 2 are like night and day with the '97 being more sensitive across the board.

OK UPDATE IN REGARD TO MY RADAR PURCHASE-- Whistler Z-19r+ Radar Detector

I had to take an emergency trip to AZ from Castle Rock Colorado !
Left at 3pm to go to Tucson – 15 min notice
I grabbed some pants and clean underwear! to put in the glove box
“don’t worry if you are under the age of 30 you do not get the reference”
I stopped by my local Walmart to pick one up for the trip because I knew I could return it when I got home.

Whistler Z-19r+ Radar Detector

VG-2 Detection did not try

Colorado – Laser - I have state trooper that lives at the end of my street he said that all their cars have laser and some secret tricks too. Not sure if he was jacking with me for the other stuff he says he can not talk about.

New Mexico – KA – K- X all the bands alerted
I got hit 1 time with a laser must have been the supervisor LOL
AZ- 1 time coming in to the state Laser and leaving the state laser could have been false
Commonsense saved me in AZ and a dummy speeding in the fast lane alone so alerted from behind.

New Mexico – this thing saved my life 6 times or more it was Johnny on the spot every time.
The dark mood was awesome since most of my driving there and back was at night.
If I would have not stopped and got this radar, I would have for sure got a ticket in New Mexico
Information is on my own personal exp only have no exp knowledge. (Still taken baby steps)
If you live in New Mexico this one is for you along with regular commonsense you should be fine highway driving.
If you live in Colorado & Arizona – This thing Sucks and I will be returning this week.
When I got hit with laser alerted 2 then blast at 4 – I think they were doing what I have read about turning it on then pulling the trigger – almost zero time to react – I try to keep it 15 to 20 over so that saved me on the laser hits.

So I will have to do more research for the best laser detector for me in Colorado – I also did not like how it would not give indication that there were law enforcement in the area. I past a couple state troopers in Colorado and AZ just seating in the median and she was silent as a mouse.

When I get my next one I will try to do a better job giving everyone good information. This was such a last min thing. I also would like to get a dash cam as well.

My best friend worked for Laser Technologies in Denver (Sales) but understands the technology enough has really good information. Knows nothing about radar detectors just the units they sale to law enforcement. HE did say trying to design hardware to combat detectors was not worth there time because of all the human factors and that very few people use them based on their data.
Just the messenger no exp knowledge here !

He said you will not win with speed with laser you have to count on range conditions weather, traffic, clear line of sight of metal availability on your car. get a Detector with good range and hope he hits the car in front of you so you have proper warning.

He said he was going to get me some of his training material to read. I just need proper warning I am not trying to do 110 in a 55.
But 75 on open highway sucks !

Below are the 2 top company’s in the country based on sales for Radar to law enforcement not in order

I am just trying to contribute because i have gotten good information from this forum

Please be careful talking to police and also LTI. Remember that "loose lips sink ships" in this cat and mouse game. I know us mice would be interested in seeing that LTI training material around here though.

From what I have found thus, the ZR31R+, appears to be based off the CR93 and olde series vs the Change(s) made to the CR97/95. The ZR31R+ is the ZR19 R+ , but with GPS and sold in stores like Walmart and other Auto parts stores.

If this is true, just be careful with Ka 35.5, as @Kennyc56 and I tested his CR88 which give near half the distance to that Frequency. Depending on the Cobra series you have/had, this series of Whistler might just be better.

@TroyB, Did you get your Z-31R+ yet? If so, What are your initial impressions of the detector?
