If/when it happens again I'll try to keep better track of the frequencies. Since it doesn't happen very often, I can't easily recreate the scenario :(

That right there tells me it’s not a permanent installation. I get 34.7 Ka band alerts every single time I pass Lackland AFB’s main entrances. Try to find out if there’s a donut shop or police station in the area, maybe alongside city hall or something. Helotes, TX, is like that, where cops park at their little miniature version of city hall a little ways off the road, but they don’t always turn off their radar, so sometimes driving by you’ll get Ka alerts that ramp up and back down again relatively quickly.

Can you see any doppler effect, freq goes up and or down. If so, when it changes direction, that's when your closest to the source.
No, that’s not the Doppler effect (or color shifting). When your detector sees the frequency change as you drive by a cop running radar, it’s because the signal your detector is seeing was (generally speaking) originally coming from the front facing radar antenna and after you pass them the strongest signal is from their rear radar antenna which is almost never tuned exactly the same as the front. So you might see 34.688 and then 34.714, but that is just the difference in the two antennas, NOT the Doppler effect.

Understood. But the effect, or closest location, would still be indicated by the frequency change?

Interesting thread. I drive rural back roads to work and three times out of four, there is a 34.7 alert at exactly the same spot.....but there's nothing around except forest. No LEOs ever spotted. It's weird.

So I've been reminded of this thread and realized I never posted what I think is a plausible solution. There's an office for Montana Highway Patrol close to the interstate (I90) as well as a department of transportation location. There could occasionally be an LEO at either of those sites or heading to those sites, and MHP always was CO when I lived there. I have since moved to Washington state, so I no longer drive this route as a daily commute.
