Educate yourself and make the choice that works for you. Do some research and don't just read "government agency, manufacturer, or drug company" studies. There is alot of info available on the vaccines available.

The National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC), founded under the name Dissatisifed Parents Together (DPT) in 1982, is an American 501(c)(3)[1] anti-vaccine organization which has been widely criticized as a leading source of fearmongering and misinformation about vaccines .

Your research is based on fake bullshit by anti-vax people.

Is this the younger v older generation? Is it just that hard to tell the difference between a real website and one made up by whackjobs?

It's amazingly frustrating to see how many people slurp up NVIC and other misinformation websites like they're gospel, then tell other people to "Educate yourself and make the choice that works for you. Do some research and don't just read "government agency, manufacturer, or drug company" studies.", when they haven't even done anything beyond the bare minimum of pulling up what agrees with them.

Like scientists across the entire flipping globe haven't already agreed that you should vaccinate for preventable diseases.

This is like global warming, people want to stick their fingers in their ears and go "nananananana the evidence I looked at says global warming is not caused by humans!" when that can be easily disproven with SCIENCE.

The only sites you can trust are sites like the CDC, as well as articles in medical journals that survive peer review. Even a group having one or two physicians or RNs in its leadership such as the one you linked to cannot be trusted. Let's not forget that it was a doctor (Andrew Wakefield) who started the whole claim of the links between vaccines and autism that was later debunked, an act for which he lost his medical license.

So anyway, "do your research" does NOT mean that you just type something into a search engine and read everything that comes out and try to give everything equal weight. A search for the best radar detector will inevitably reveal RMR products, and RMR's website that claims that their products scramble police RADAR and prevent it from getting a speed reading on your car. And sites like Vortex's site that prove that their claims are bullshit. Personally, I think the courts have sided too much on the side of free speech in terms of the anti-vax BS out there. Free speech is not unlimited; you can't yell "Fire!" in a crowded theater without consequences, nor can you say or write bad things about other people that aren't true (such statements are called slander or libel and you can be sued for them if it can be proved that they're untrue). When the First Amendment was written, being able to publish material for others to read generally meant you were reputable but that's not really the case nowadays, where all it takes is signing up for a hosting service and a URL and pointing a search engine at your content to get people reading what you wrote, even if it's pure bullshit. What I'd like to see is someone who read one of those anti-vax websites and got one of these diseases, or their families, go on to sue the website and organization for harm. Maybe at that point, the courts will actually do something about taking down these websites.

I swear to God, the moment I read "vaccine injuries", I just stop reading. Listen, I'm completely sure vaccines have caused reactions and killed or hospitalized people. But, stop looking at anti-vaxx sites and just look at the numbers. No, I don't care the ingredients in the vaccines. No, I don't care they used dog kidney cells. No, I don't care that something that is found already in fruits and in our bodies is used. Just look at the before and after results of vaccines.

I find it funny that people talk about "big pharma" all the time and that they make big money on vaccines. The kid that just got tetanus and it costed $1 million to treat. Guess which way "big pharma" made more money off of. It sure wasn't the kid that got the tetanus shot.

I have exema... So don't talk to me like that Jaguar...

You have no clue... Everyone can treat it and live through it. Life is not always bright and peachy... Trust me a shot or medicine can't cure everything.

That's the problem with this world. People trying to medicate their way out of pain. Taking their Ambien and Prozac. Get off your high horses people. There is pain in the world. Whether that be emotional or physical. Get used to it. You can't avoid it. That's life.

Something worth a damn that can wipe out a population is worth vaccinating for. Something menial and temporary like chickenpox, shingles, or even exema can be dealt with. It's not going to kill you. Back in the day we were taught what can't kill you will only make you stronger. Instead we are running from things that rarely kill or hurt.

Yup /peace
We aren't talking about Prozac, ambien or opiates. We are talking about scientist finding ways to make us immune to some diseases. I mean, if you could get a vaccine that would eliminate the common cold would you just not get it? Because most people are just fine. Well, except when it turns in pneumonia and kills. I can tell you right now, my dad had shingles and it was no picnic. There's such a thing called quality of life. I will be getting the vaccine for shingles the moment I reach 50.

I'm sorry, you shouldn't be allowed to go around picking up completely avoidable diseases and then spewing germs that infect other people. If that's your choice, then you should be put under house arrest so that you can't go around infecting other people. And if you should somehow manage to infect someone who can't get the vaccine for medical reasons, despite being under house arrest, then you should be liable for damages.

Don't worry, I wont be spewing the germs you speak about! I played in the dirt as a kid, my immune system is top notch!

Just to play The Devil's advocate here......... Should we do the same for STDs? Plenty of STDs are more life-threatening than chickenpox and shingles. They're also easily avoidable.

Well STDs, by definition, are spread only through sexual/intimate contact. So they're kind of in a different category in terms of how they spread. You're not going to pick up a STD at Disneyland because the person behind you in line had it (and if you did, you'd probably be ejected from the Park for indecent exposure). Everyone should be getting the HPV vaccine as well as Hepatitis A/B. But a lot of the other STDs don't have vaccines available.

Sure they are different, it takes a conscious act to spread them, so maybe the penalties for spreading them should be even more severe than your above mentioned penalties?

It’s a tough call. There was an interesting discussion recently on the Libertarian Party Facebook page about it, even. Hard to get everyone to agree either way.

However, regardless of laws or rules or what someone “should” or “shouldn’t” do, I think it’s really, really, really important to understand that confirmation bias is real, and it is strong, and going out and finding someone who makes claims you like—against the overwhelmingly massive body of evidence that says otherwise—isn’t the same thing as “do your research.” Googling up someone who makes spurious claims based on being uneasy about something they heard somewhere is not the same as decades upon decades of actual research.

Nothing in life is entirely risk-free. One of the few things that’s almost there? Vaccines. I’m sure Alex Jones disagrees, but if you spend too much time down that particular kind of alley, you’re going to wind up lost.

Personally, I know that based on the science, vaccines work and are very safe. I get my pet vaccinated as well.

What bugs me is when people start rounding up the angry mob and pitchforks to try to take away someone's free choice. Just like you noted @Deacon , even the libertarians debate this issue. I bet most of them wind up in the camp that the person deciding not to get the vaccine should only be punished if and when that person actually transmits a disease due to his or her negligence.
