Starting a new thread because this looks interesting: #1 Head-Up Display For Your Car | HUDWAY Drive

112400

Seems to be designed as more of a stand-alone device with it's own processor and memory compared to the HUDWAY Cast. The addition of a video input port is also interesting.

Available for pre-order now at $169.

Question: Do you have to run your phone in landscape mode to use the screen cast feature?

Looks like the Drive supports 3 different connection modes: BLE, screen mirroring through the app, and Miracast/AirPlay:

I wonder how "hackable" it will be?

You can have your phone in portrait, just smaller screen displayed. I personally have tasker running to force my phone to landscape when Bluetooth for my car runs.

The CAST uses Miracast, so that's what I'm used to. For the Drive, the Bluetooth will be for the supported Apps, I'm sure JB will figure that out. But using Miracast, I do not use any Hudway app unless I want too check firmware.

I also like the mount better for the Drive....

I'm not sure the timeline of Drive at $169, but at $189 for the Cast, cheaper than I got it during the Kickstart, I'd be happy with a Cast again. I have a year running it. @johnboy00 had been nice to include features on JBV1 to make my Cast more useable for me.

Tempting... especially if it will have some level of JBV1 support!

I like the mount design and how it's easily removable, but it's not clear how the display unit folds up for storage. Does the screen just fold down? Makes me worry a bit about durability.

Estimated ship date is 7/1.
I bought my Cast in July 2017 with a 11/1 ship date, and each month they would delay a month, and I finally was able to receive it March of last year. There is a possibility that lessons were learned from the Cast and 7/1 will be the receive date. They will update the current ship date on the website.

A lesson I learned from the Kickstart days was they respond quickest to Facebook IMs. If I bought a Drive today, I would IM them and ask for a current ship date and then each month ask for an update. Also let them know you are from RDF have potentially a lot of customers here (Even if they just Cast Waze)

Also, I am glad I have my OBD cable for my Cast, it provides power and will send info to the Cast if I do no have JBV1 connected via the Miracast, my car gives MPH and RPM.

But $169 is a great price! It will go up to $299 like the Cast did. With the Cast at $189 they are still going to want to get rid of that stock. I may purchase a Drive then sell my Cast. I do like the Magnetic mount and would I hope Hudway sends you the API info.... Talk about amazing Situational Awareness!

The Cast Screen is extremely durable. It does fold down, but you can see right through it, no need to ever fold it.

It will display anything on your screen with the Miracast connection. Once I have one, I can start looking around for documentation on making it compatible with their app(s) for BLE connections.

I don't know why you would choose this over an android auto or apple car play? Then again I don't like things in my eyesight. Anytime I drive a car with a hud I usually turn it off.

Having the Cast, I was surprised how much I was looking down at my phone before, and now my phone is in my pocket. It is low enough that for me that the screen sits 'Virtually' on the hood of my car, it does not block my view. I never need to look at the radio, or my phone. I know I am safer with my Cast.

I do understand not wanting anything in your eyesight.

I rely on mostly audio alerts. only when I marking cops on waze or changing songs do I look at my radio. I guess I have never experienced useful info taking advantage of the hud to see if it would actually be worthwhile. The factory is always showing speed or radio stations, I don't think I have seen a factory hud even use GPS yet. I also like my interiors to look rather stock so Android auto is really appealing a works well on most cars. The one that I have issues with is Cadillac.

Having the Cast,
Can you comment on how it works in different lighting conditions? Hudway doesn't have great reviews on Amazon, so I've always been a little leery.

The Hudway app is terrible! Using Waze, or even better JBV1 makes it amazing. That is why must reviews I've read complain.

There is a light sensor, some nights driving on the highway where I'm going under lights to dark to lights, the screen can be seen adjusting itself.

I don't like being in a car without my CAST.

The number one seller for me right now is that the plan on making an IR camera to go with it. This could be the solution I've been looking for.

You could get a raspberry pi zero with the ir camera and a set of ir blasters and cast to the hudway.. Won't be thermal but would be night vision
That's where I was heading until I came across this. My coworker already turned me on to an IR light bar that he mounted on his side by side. He uses it to hunt pigs at night. I thought, "that's funny, that's what I plan to use it for too."
