Was I out of line? Idiot shooting the gap with too little space.

I was maintaining my throttle...
To be clear, this in your mind justifies your behavior? That you’re entitled to cause problems for others and to hold a grudge and to unnecessarily screw with anyone whose detector isn’t as cool as yours?

To answer your original question: yes, you were out of line. You can try to rationalize your behavior as much as you like, but the bottom line is that neither of your made good choices, and that does include you.

Fact is if he would have hit me in the gap shooting who would have been at fault for the accident? Likely the officer is going to side with the person not in the middle of a lane change. Same with the brake check scenario.

He’s a dangerous driver.

Generally any acts of road rage are out of line. We are all guilty of it but more often than not, in retrospect it was a bad decision.

I got brake checked in a similar circumstance. Dropped the Fing Cee U Next Tuesday in front of my wife and kids. Not a proud moment. If they weren’t there I’m not sure what would’ve happened.

Dropping the M-i-L off at the airport in Vegas my kids learned some new words as I had an "altercation" with another driver. It certainly was not one of my finer points on the vacation.

Depending on what state you're in, you could be a little in the wrong for simply not yielding to traffic which clearly has the intent to overtake you.

You could also be in the wrong for sitting in the left lane unless you're actively passing someone. All depends on your state's laws and the situation.

It sounds like you had a little lane entitlement rather than simply yielding as he clearly had intent to overtake you. He took it way too far by break checking you.

So yeah, if you just moved out of the way you could have avoided the situation regardless of how much of an ass hat someone is.

100% agree and this is the problem with lane entitlement mentalities. Thankfully Illinois has strict left lane rules, but people are dumb and it isn't always enforced.

Right so if I try to pass you on the right while you’re accelerating in the left because of a prior semi blocking traffic and seeing that I am trying to pass you, you would stop what your doing and let me shoot the gap?

He shot the gap. He should have moved on. I didn’t have a problem with it... I got up to 85. Then he became the impediment down to 50ish mph.
You assume he wanted to go 85, regardless of the history you have from seeing him you're being a lane hog.

It's very clear and that's why having clear laws about proper lane usage keeps people like you from trying to rationalize behavior that's actually harmful to themselves and others.

I wish there was an app to disable people's vehicles when they lane hog so they have to sit on the side of the road and think about how to drive properly for 15min before being able to go again.

Yes, he certainly is a dangerous driver. Definitely stay away from him, weather you choose to stay ahead or behind (probably stay behind since you have more of a commuter car). No matter how one sides, dead is dead.

I have posted this before, but neither one of you want it to be this close:

who would have been at fault for the accident?
Who knows? Why would that matter, regardless? Onlookers probably just saw two phallus-swingers going at it, one trying to deny the pass and the other trying to make it. Why not drive smart and defensively and avoid the collision in the first place as well as the road rage by briefly easing off to let the rabbit run? Where is the harm in that?

This isn’t court. The specifical state and local ordinances don’t really matter. Here’s the kicker: in the eyes of the law you’re both guilty of reckless endangerment of human life. Look, you can try to stubbornly rationalize your choices, but the reality is you made a poor choice all the way around. It benefited no one, including you, and it led to the other dude pulling some stupid crap of his own and both of you continuing to scuffle instead of simply having a reliable rabbit to rustle the bushes out in front of you.

No one died. It’s not the end of the world. We ALL make dumb decisions sometimes. But we don’t get any better if we spend all our time insisting we have no culpability in the problems we cause.

Tell that to the semi’s who do the same thing for multiple miles... I was actively passing convoy... all we’re doing 65. I was accelerating. He was impatient and aggressive... I was still accelerating. No I didn’t assume he wanted to go 85. I assumed he wanted to go 90 which is what he always goes. And that’s what I was working towards... hell if he would have stuck to me I would have continued to accelerate until the semi’s were all passed. We were held up by a semi who was passing a semi. Read the story because I don’t think you have since you think I was going to go 85. Hell I went up to 125ish and passed after the brake check. He should have done what CJR is smart and didn’t do... try to shoot the gap. I wasn’t being a lane hog. I had a huge difference in speed between me and the semi. He was impatient and couldn’t wait 2-3 more seconds... but then brake checks me and loses those 2-3 seconds.

I could have escalated the situation more but I’m not dumb... I was not the one with road rage. I safely left him behind me. I wasn’t petty and brake checked him back or flipped the bird. I have far more restraint than that.

You had a volunteer rabbit who you might want other times. Let him get in front of you and thank him. Still brake checking was stupid on his part.

Lol I’ve driven in Illinois the ISP don’t really care about it... they’d rather get the speeder doing 90.

Agree and I use him whenever he’s around. But the distance between semi’s was too small.

We all hate the LLH, don't be a LLH.
If I'm rolling 85, and a 90+ driver rolls up I'm going to yield to them at first opportunity. If the right lane is solid bumper to bumper cars and I cant move over I generally put on my right turn signal to indicate I intend to move right as soon as possible. Works pretty well, just my general practice.

Except I was accelerating to 90 and I was at 65 going to 90 because of a semi that had just moved over... good lord people read the story... don’t assume

I freaking hate it when people that are going "fast" think they are fast enough to block the left lane. Really, the person that is going psl+10 can use the same justification for not moving over. I'm in a big vehicle, so I don't do much "shooting the gap". But, if you are in the left lane and it's 3-5 car lengths to next group of cars. I'm going to blast by you and probably cut over a little close so you know you are in the wrong lane.

I had a guy that was tailing me in traffic, I had 1.5 car lengths to the guy in front of me it was a solidine of traffic. He went from be hind me to next to me to try to can it, traffic was slowing as the right and center Lane's were merging due to construction so he gap closed and he couldt not fit he raged sooo hard behind me for the next several miles as we drop single file. I really don't get it if he had gotten ahead of me he would have been stuck behind the guy in front of me and the dozens of cars ahead of him... I took the left lane after construction and took off at +25. He weaved between the right and center Lane's for the next 1 mile keeping pace and then when he was exiting flipped the bird. I pointed at the camera and he dropped the bird and slinked off the highway

Seems like he was a jerk for the brake check and you were offended over his "shooting the gap".

As long as you didn't have to hit your brakes to avoid an imminent accident as a result of his gap shooting, then his move was legit.
