I was asked if there is a radar detector that detects the police radar detector detector.
I’m not sure I don’t think so but I just though I’d ask the more informed here.

Some of the older models of COBRAS, maybe escort? I think used to claim to be able to detect VG/VG2 and then engage shutdown- not sure if that actually worked. I think I read that on here, could be wrong.

Outside of Virginia or DC you're unlikely to encounter RDDs (unless being used for commercial vehicle enforcement). Technically it would be possible to make a RDDD (and some detectors do false Ka band when close to a Spectre Elite), but no detectors currently advertise that capability.

A radar detector detector detector? Maybe, but then you need to watch out for the radar detector detector detector detector. It's turtles all the way down.

A few of the old cobras claimed to be able to, may have only been the old VG/ VG2 units which are not used in the real world at this point... The only issue was that the cobras range for picking up the RDD was less than half the range the RDD could detect the leaky cobras... Wasn't a practical feature.

I had one back in the late 90s that would randomly give a tone and voice alert saying "VG2 Alert." I think it was a Bel. This is was St. Louis, MO so I doubt it was actually picking up an RDD.

In states where they’re legal, it is still possible to come across one being used. Since they are banned federally from all commercial vehicles, Local, State, and Federal law enforcement could potentially use them to focus on commercial trucks that may be operating them.

I still have an ancient Beltronics 935 in one of my drawers that has that VG-2 Stealth alert on it. It went off a few times I remember back when I used it but after knowing what I know now, I don’t know if it ever was legit or not bein’ that the only places I know of here in the states that outlaws radar detectors is Virginia and DC.

That’s pretty much the reason why I run a Redline EX in my rock truck because I have heard stories of cops asking drivers where their radar detector was. I don’t know fully how them radar detector detectors work, how much the cost, or if they’re a separate unit from police radar or not but I wouldn’t think too many cities/municipalities would invest in that kind of equipment just for CMV enforcement. I dunno, maybe I’m wrong, that’s why I run a detector that is pretty much fully undetectable.

They are a separate device than a radar gun.

Here is a video of how one would be used on the road by an officer. In this case, it is fellow member Vortex using one on the road. The device model is known as the Spectre, (spectre as in a ghost). The spectre series superceded the earlier VG-2. The latest and greatest is the Spectre Elite.

Using a Spectre (like an officer would) to find cars with radar detectors:

How the Spectre works:

And now you see how hands on using an RDD is, almost impractical. The officers has to drive and not crash, listen to the radio, watch the computer screen, run radar, and stare at the RDD while swiveling it around. There is no way they will buy and use that thing in a state where detectors are legal. At best they might stick one in a weigh station.

That’s kinda what I figured and often wonder about the validity of the “stories” I’ve heard about coppers around here using RDD’s. Maybe they’re true, or partially true, I don’t know. All I know is, I’ve run through our local coops quite often with my Redline EX ever since I’ve had it in the truck and, not an issue. Although, I haven’t gone through the super coop yet on the interstate.... I always dodge that one....

I had a couple of Cobra units that claimed spectre/vg2 detection. In reality it was just another thing to cause a false alert.

I had a Cobra ESD-9870 that purported to alert to Spectre and VG2. No idea if it worked because I never used it in a banned area, but I do remember other radar detectors causing it to false alert to Spectre.
