All damn good questions! All I know is this, I own the best detectors that have ever been built. 2 R1's, a Redline, V1, a RX65. and several older whistlers. If they would just fix this damn Ka /K band mixup BS, the CR97 would be my favorite one of the bunch! Throw in a little more off axis and this thing would be a full on monster!
Indeed.
I really wish Whistler to join this community and take the customer feedback seriously. I understand it takes an effort to stay on top of it, but at the end is a win-win situation for sure. Other vendors do it, and it looks like it pays off.
So, please, Whistler, join in and step up....

I agree with you! Problem is I'm not "normal'! I can't stand to run a detector. ANY detector for more than a few minutes knowing It's not running wide open! FDSr really is supposed to be for info only, but as all of us who have tried to turn it off know, it does more than that! It cut a mile of distance off of my CR95 when @VariableWave and I tested it awhile back with it turned off. It also slows it's reflexes against Q/T and I/O shots . I'd rather deal with the falses than get popped with I/O and not have the best protection! When it gets to be too much, I just flip my 3-way toggle switch and turn the CR97 off and fire my R1 up!
I am not “normal” either...lol. I like having a wide open radar detector to maximize sensitivity and warning range too, but (for now) FDSr and I have “irreconcilable differences”...lol. Every once and I while I will turn that feature on, give it another try, but I just don’t have a good experience with it. I don’t mind a little noise or a chatty radar detector, but my CR97 chats way too much with FDSr on. When I turn FDSr off, it’s like false alarms decrease by 95 percent or more. I would estimate I get somewhere in the range of around 20 times more false alarms with FDSr on vs running it off. It is a huge difference in my CR97. Maybe it is not as bad on your CR97. Anyway, I am cool with my CR97. I think I have figured it out, but I totally get what you are saying about wanting all the sensitivity and warning range that you can get.

Oh, it's bad, but I'm" sicker" than you are! All jokes aside, I live in a rural area, that makes a big difference! and like I said, I switch it up between my other detectors as soon as it gets on my nerves, that helps a lot!

Raise your right hand and repeat after me, "HI my name is Kenny and I have a problem!" Lol. ME TOO! I'm gonna post a killer I/O vid tomorrow which is a great example of why you can never have enough range! I know, I/O in Jersey?? Yup. stay tuned

K/Ka mix up is the only real issue here. If that is to be fixed, we are golden. Most likely though, it is not possible to fix with via firmware update. I suspect the nature of the design is at fault. In order to have such a quick reactivity the hard-coded approach is to scan for X/K/Ka in one round (except 34.7), which is the case here. So there is the design limit of fixing that.
If I am wrong, then the "cost" of fixing it (scan the bands independently) will be slower reactivity, as it will take longer to scan and positively confirm the source frequency. The real question is how much of a delay (reduction in range) will that cause, and it if is practical to do so???
I am not an engineer, so I don’t know the firmware vs hardware issue on the CR97 on this K/Ka issue. There may be nothing that can be done until a new model comes out.

It would be nice if they could fix the issue with a firmware update. I really would not feel comfortable selling my CR97 (if I wanted to), because of this issue without giving a full disclosure of some of it’s quirks. I have figured it out, so I feel comfortable using it.

Indeed.

I absolutely agree . I wish Whistler was active on the RDF. Getting direct customer feedback helps companies succeed imo.

Everyone who has come into contact with me on this forum knows that I have A BIG PROBLEM! You more than most because you have dealt with me personally! You would think the older I get, I would mellow out at least a little, but NOPE! I agree with you 1000%, YOU CAN NEVER HAVE TOO MUCH RANGE!!!

It was second car in the turning lane he turned left
I see it now. So yes, you picked it up from far behind while there was still straight road between, and it was reflections from vehicles in front of the LEO. Then signal was lost, as the LEO entered those bends ahead. You picked it up again once you were close enough behind. Still a good one.

I had a killer series of alerts with my CR97 on my way home from work today! They were all from behind so I've got to look at the video to see if I'll post it or not. To set the scene, There was an 18 wheeler about a mile ahead of me hooked up to a tow truck. A state trooper was behind the rig with his blue lights on, so I checked my speed and put my seatbelt on. About a good mile after I passed him, I got a pretty strong 34.7 alert! I pretty much knew it was him, but my CR97 shocked me with the strong signal it was getting from a rear alert! He popped every single car that went by me and the signal got stronger and stronger till I finally could see him closing on me from behind! This went on for a good little while and I was happy as a clam watching my CR97 eat his @ss alive on every single I/O shot! We have all vented quite a bit about the shortcomings of the CR97, but I'll tell you this, it's still a kick @ss little detector when it comes to doing it's real job which is detecting radar! I consider this a save because if it didn't start picking him up from way back, I would have been hauling @ss and he would got me from behind with that Stalker and it's same lane feature! BTW just as he got to my rear bumper he popped on his blue lights and scared the hell out of me! Lucky for me, he pulled a quick U-turn and nailed an oncoming car!

After watching the video I had to post it! Even though it is from behind, you can tell exactly what is going on! You can also see what I go through all the time with NC's finest shooting I/O! At the end of the second clip there is a bonus! FDSr### picks up a semi and mutes the sound but on the screen it showed 35.5 the whole time! Not bad range either, it was the last truck it picked up!

Awesome encounter, @Kennyc56 !
My CR97 has the same performance from behind. Yesterday morning it picked up 35.5 from more than 2 miles (same pickup truck that I have posted a video before with very strong 35.5 signal). He was somewhere ahead, facing my direction, so I had a brief alert only. Then as I was getting onto the ramp to exit, I got another alert, and I saw him onto the ramp on the other side. I turned right to go onto my way, he turned left - placing him behind me, and my detector was a full blast with no cars ahead to reflect, only some trees in the distance. He then turn onto a side road, but I was shocked from how far away I picked him up at first, with 35.5 ID. There is something about his radar, it's very strong. I have to check my video again, to see it if it's worth posting, cause he never was captured on my dash cam, but I definitely saw him...

I got a good off axis around a curve 34.7 save this morning! I was impressed with the 97's off axis range on this one! I was running 72 or so with the cruise set when I got the first blip! I had plenty of time to slow down to 60 or so before I met him. Keep in mind that he was running at least as fast as me, so he was at one hell of an angle deep in the beginning of that blind curve when I first picked him up! The ramp was also excellent on this encounter! Skip to 2:25 to get right to the action if you'd like.

Nice video. I thought that was a very good detection especially with that sharp curve.
