I can't even remember when I last got a speeding ticket (and I have been doing 25k miles a year), but I just bought a 2019 Mustang GT and it is so quick to go into what might likely be deemed reckless driving territory that I'm considering it might be prudent to pick up a top notch radar detector. I've had my eye on the R3 and it's frankly about the limit of what I would consider to be reasonable in price. I just can't personally imagine shelling out $600-$650 on a radar detector.

I've seen the news drop on the Vortex Youtube channel that the R7 is coming up and the departure of the staff at Uniden though and I'm curious if those who know about these things would still go with a R3 at this point? Would there perhaps be a price drop on the R3 very soon with the R7 coming to market? I do see the posts about the used market value likely dropping.

I haven't owned a radar detector since probably the 80s. I really only remember the Passport and Escort being the big names. I think I did have a cheapo Uniden. For some reason I just thought radar detectors became outdated vs what the cops use these days. I had no idea that they have become so complex to keep up with the complexity of the systems used to catch people speeding. I'm still not 100% up to speed, but I believe the R3 seems to cover most of the bases. I am seeing the false alerts with Acura and Honda's being a weakness.

I'm in Oklahoma City btw. I see what I think are a lot of motorcycle cops (state and city) using laser around here in the city, but I'm not sure that's what it is. I'll have to pay closer attention now that I've seen the Vortex video on how laser is held vs radar. I don't think we have any speed cameras here. I did actually catch a ticket in Dallas not very long ago from a camera now that I think about it and I was really sweating it that another one might have popped me not too long ago. I like to travel as much as possible - so, I wouldn't buy strictly based on the local scene. I'll probably be taking the Mustang over to Arkansas to hit some of those incredible driving roads when it warms up. I may even make it down to South Texas to hit the Hill Country, Three Sisters, etc.

My guess is that the R3 will still hold its own for some time to come? Is it too far along in the product cycle at this point to pay $400 for one? I would hope firmware updates will not be interrupted if needed, etc.

My opinion, if you need lockouts, go R3. If you can go without. R1BBY is 179USD. Same detector with no GPS.

The Uniden R1bby if you do not need the GPS and take the rest of the money you save and put it towards a laser jammer to defend against that

Get an R3 and never look back. It's one of the best and being able to update the firmware, you won't be outdated any time soon.
Pays for itself weekly.
Good Luck.

The R3 would be a very nice choice.

I had this same concern when I got mine 2 weeks ago. The thing is that the R3 wont be valueless in a year, it will still be worth more then the DFR9, maybe you lose some value when the r7 comes out but thats still a $600 dollar RD. If something new come out sell your r3, even if you take a $100 loss you still got a year or two of good coverage.

If you wait for a ebay sale or a rakuten sale you can get a r3 for ~300.

BuyDig via ebay also has no tax in NY which is a huge deal.

At the moment, the R3 is still a top pick. Excellent range, responsive, decent blind spot filtering, gps lock outs, and can detect most low powered k band sources. None of this changes with the recent announcements. Since you don’t want to spend 600 on a detector, waiting for the R7 is not an option. While recent changes at Uniden bring some level of uncertainty, this is a well know company with a big presence in the market and it’s hard to believe they won’t continue to support their products and continue what they have started. I would also encourage you to use Waze and look at laser protection. Radar is and will continue to be used but laser is becoming more and more common. There is a section on this forum to help you look determine if laser protection is needed in your area.

Bought a R3 to hold me over till the R7 comes out. can't say enough great things about it. Range is amazing and I get very few false alerts. To me the GPS features are well worth it mainly for Q-ride. I got a refirb one for $299. Uniden isn't going to discontinue these either after the R7 so you will still get firmware updates and support.

Thanks for the replies and the reminder about the R1BBY. That extra $100 off really, really makes it a tough call. I've got a $100 in rebate cards that I sort of consider spent money I can apply toward this purchase. So, it's essentially either a $95 R1 or a $335 R3 with tax. Is the R3 worth 3.5X as much? I do have 2 cars currently - so, I might actually make use of the case and extra mount to move between vehicles.

I can only imagine that it is super helpful to eliminate as many false alerts as possible around town, but it's somewhat of a matter of not knowing how bad it is and if it's worth twice as much. If I am even going to use it around town that much too frankly. If I traveled to Dallas more regularly the red light and speed camera alerts would make it much more compelling to go for the R3, but Oklahoma apparently doesn't allow cameras currently. I do see there are a handful popping up around though so maybe that is changing.

I'm pretty sure that one ticket from the speed camera I got in Dallas nailed me for like $140 and it really pissed me off to get it. So much so that I would only imagine I wouldn't blink an eye in getting the R3 if I were still feeling that mad about it. I considered risking not paying it since I don't live there and they can't really do much about it.

My apologies for openly debating this on here. $95 is almost nothing and seems like not much risk to see how it works vs. $335 being a chunk of change that I'm feeling might drop to less soon, but if the R1 is so bad I don't use it half the time it might not be nearly as worth having.

Bad in what regard? I've never had a Ka false with band segmentation. I run with k band off as I dont really ever see it. But others can attest the quietness with proper k settings.

The r1 is just more noisy, thats really the only difference. If a few extra chirps dont bother you then the $95 for the r1 is a great deal.

If you have the money, wait for the R7. If you only have 400 then R3 for sure.

I have R3 and DFR 7 . After a few reviews of R7 and little time. I will be getting and R7 if reviews are as expected. Till then I would not hesitate to get R3.

Well, this is sort of the dilemma that I find myself in - I don't know what I don't know when it comes to all of the filtering capability and how effective it might be in my primary environment. If the R1 is so sensitive that it just constantly false alerts around town even with the best filtering settings turned on and I just don't end up using it then it becomes a tool that I will only use on trips out of town and is not as valuable to me, but for less than $100 it's easy to argue that it's still very much worth having for that purpose and it's totally worth the gamble to see.

Another element is that I am hesitant to leave a $400 radar detector hanging on my windshield while I run to the grocery store, etc. and I question if I will actually put it up and take it down every time I make a run around town. This reminds me of watching a super cheap radar detector getting stolen out of my car when I was like 16. I was several stories up in a hospital looking at my car and watched thieves pull up and break the wing window out on my restored classic 1970 Porsche 911and proceed to rip out my sun visor along with the piece of junk radar detector. It probably cost 5x as much to repair the damage as that worthless piece of junk radar detector cost.

I do sort of enjoy tech and I really do appreciate the added benefits of the built in GPS - low speed mute, camera alerts, etc. I'm in a situation where another pricey material possession might be cause for me personally to have more caution than the average person about having a top end product vs the bargain option that might accomplish much of the same objective. I hate for it to have to be any factor in making a decision about things.

I appreciate everyone's opinions on it. I know people have their own bias toward what they chose for the reasons they chose it. I just can't see forking out $600 on a radar detector in the case of the R7 or the Escort 360c. I'm sure it will be brilliant though and I will watch the reviews. Maybe if it's a huge success I will consider the prospect of the value it brings to the table at some point down the road.

I'm also considering that at least while I still have my Honda as a second car I've got the opportunity to run a prospective R3 around town and get all of the lockouts programmed and just generally evaluate how it performs while I'm far less tempted to do anything that would get me a ticket, but that's sort of grasping at straws for justification.

Thanks!

Mount your new one on the visor or at the top of the windshield in the tint strip. It's barely noticeable to would be thieves.

Don't do your Mustang the injustice of not getting an R3. I was in the same boat as you. Bought a new car, and would find myself +15 of PSL in no time so I went the R3 route. Have you looked at the DFR7 as well? It has the lockout capability with GPS, and won't break the bank. That can get you in the door with some protection, and then see if you want to step up your game down the road.

I would stress the importance of jammers as well.

I don't think laser jammers are legal here, but I'll look into it.

It's a done deal. As stated, I need some protection and the R1 has all of the sensitivity of the R3 without the luxury features and for the price I can't imagine that I will regret not picking one up until I see how the market unfolds in the near future and gauge my own needs with a little more familiarity of usage. I might be looking to pick up a nice used R3 from one of you guys when you move to a R7 possibly.

I bought a R1 from Best Buy a few hours ago and took a drive around town. In straight out of the box city mode it still does false on K band, but so far the only cops that I've seen are using Ka and it alerted me to several just on the drive home. I'll have to research this, but I might not need much K band here IDK. I can turn it way down possibly, etc. It doesn't just go off constantly even in regular city mode though which is a relief. I was afraid that sensitivity might mean it was a huge pain constantly. I can definitely understand the added benefit of the GPS.

I also need to get mounts for my phone and start using it more effectively. I was never a Waze user before I got the Mustang. I've had built in nav and used Google Maps some, but just never felt compelled to get a mount. The Mustang's infotainment allows me to use Android Auto and have Waze displayed on the 8" screen which is nice, but not always convenient to be locked into using Android Auto. So, I've got to get on the ball with phone mounts in my cars and start using Waze more. It's free and it should pick up the slack of the R1 with speed cameras in Dallas, etc. for the time being.

I'm sort of excited to get the firmware updated and go out for a drive and see what I find. I didn't study this like a finals exam before pulling the trigger so there is still much for me to learn about what to expect and how much I can afford to throttle down the K band.

Thanks everyone!
