So I want to know if anyone else has experienced the following while driving on Stoney Tr in YYC? Or anywhere in YYC for that matter….

Since December whenever I have approached from both directions, a situation in which a police officer had someone pulled over in their patrol suv; I have not picked up a signal of any kind! Usually when they are in the patrol car with the lights on with someone pulled over I have always, every single time I have passed the situation picked up their KA band.

I understand the officer may have just turned his unit off which is fine, but only in the last little while has this happened a total of 3 times in just over a month?? Started to make me wonder if something is wrong with my R3…

Then as I was driving on Stoney the other day (it was during dawn and the sun was going down) I was cruising at 120 (the speeds 100 for those who don’t know) and I approached the Deerfoot overpass heading Westbound and saw the car infront of me slam on the breaks as he was getting towards the overpass. At this time I also slowed down and looked in the spot under the bridge and saw the black police SUV sitting there….

So I slowed right down (as I was at max 10 car lengths from the SUV) to 100km/h and passed infront of the cops who were just sitting in the Explorer with ZERO Alert on the R3!??!?!

As I looked back I saw a car maybe 50 yards behind me pass the cop at which point the cop pulled out turned on the lights!!?? Proceeding to pull the guy over!

I was utterly in shock as I don’t understand how there was no Laser, KA or K band being shot at me or how the guy behind me even got tagged?? He was literally 50 years behind me!!!

The lead up to where the cop was is as straight and flat as it gets with a slight downhill approach; but we are basically talking if a signal was getting shot I would have picked up the KA from miles and miles away…. I always have. There was another time in Dec in which I picked up a KA ffaaaarrrr away and it was legit.

So I know the radar is working… KA and K band are perfect…. RCMP KA was picked up in an insane fashion so far away, up a hill and around a corner…. All of the recent pullovers I have passed up made no alert, and then the incident in which the guy behind me got tagged 50 years back and yet the approach of 3-4 KM of dead straight I never got a Beep!!

Did the recent court case to determine the constitutional legality of receiving tickets in the mail change something about how cops can pull you over in AB?? Do they just eye ball it now? Seriously scary stuff guys… Do they have a new gun or using a new technology?? Remember these are either marked or unmarked Explorers with the cops sitting in them or driving around……

Someone help me figure this out please…

That’s some scary stories. What ever it is, please tell them to not bring it to Quebec.
@Eloi any idea what it is ?

Sounds like a Lidar trap. If you think the R3 is going to give you a laser alert, from close in, your sadly misinformed.

At 1000’, the beam is approximately 3 feet in diameter. So 500 feet would be 18”.

Guessing that he’s shooting at your front head lights or front bumper, I doubt it’s not getting anywhere close to your windshield mounted detector.

It could be a rear overpass shot and the vehicle could be the chase vehicle taking radio calls from the Lidar operator on the past overpass.

There is Redflex and MRCD in Alberta that the R3 can not pick up. But that’s Photo radar. Not something that will get you pulled over for. It’s a picture in the mail.

If you actually got a Lidar save from an R3, or any windshield mounted detector, that would be only as a ticket notifier. A Lidar save would be like seeing a unicorn.

I’d say lidar or a two LEO scenario. Especially on Stoney with all the overpasses, places to hide behind them etc.

Yes sounds like a classic laser trap. RD's are generally pretty useless with Laser, and it's not he strong suit of the R3. it's a very narrow beam so unless it's pointed right at your RD you aren't likely to get an alert. you need some laser protection.

Get a dash cam going. Could help in reviewing your encounters.

I know but I thought Laser had to be stationary and on a tripod? These cops were all sitting in their SUV's and the 3 "pull overs" I passed were random and not in a dedicated speed trap! Meaning they were either sitting stationary road side inthe SUV like the LEO I passed or moving when they trapped the victims speed.

I am assuming then that YYC police have essentially all moved to Laser for the most part?! WTF!

As for the Red Flex I am aware of those as I get alerted once im in front of the K band (kill zone) but you have to be blind as a bat to not see those. Also the R3 has had MRCD support for about 3-4 months now via firmware update 1.46 (
) even though that is not even an issue for where I drive. YYC only uses MRCD rarely and its all in innercity where i dont even speed.

Your right. The Lidar has to be stationary. You seen them parked under an overpass the Lidar can be hand held. So they possibly could’ve just been there shooting from off the front of their vehicle.

It’s kind of smart in away if you look at it that way. If it’s really sunny out, you may have a little more trouble picking something up in the shadows.

If they have 3 vehicles pulled over, how is that not a speed trap?

They do both here in Edmonton. There’s no rule. I can easily get a speed reading with a hand held Dragon Eye Compact.

I think BailyAb or Dukes had some pictures of EPS or CPS having an officer standing up just underneath an overpass shooting Lidar. Look around. The pictures are here on RDF.

I’ve seen a single officer standing on the James A MacDonald bridge sidewalk by himself and a Lidar gun as your heading west. Come down the west side of the bridge as the elevation goes down, and there cops waving you in.

I know @Dukes had a picture or video of a cop sitting on his ass with a handheld Dragon Eye doing ass shots on the backside of an overpass embankment.

Some places sit in a truck and shoot Lidar out the back camper slider window of an unmarked police truck.

Really it’s just another day in Alberta. Nothing new and no new type of radar.

You mis-read what I stated or perhaps I did not state it clearly enough... There were 3 seperate incidents on 3 seprate days of me driving past a LEO having pulled someone over... not in a speed trap, but as if they just tagged them from behind while moving, or as if they were sitting solo under a bridge with a gun out the window held by hand.

There is no LEO holding a Lidar gun on the hood of any of these senarios....

The only credible possible answer here is they all just shut off their KA guns once they had the speeder pulled over, or there was laser being shot from elsewhere which makes no sense in my case because I would have been the one getting pulled over.... Perhaps the other drivers who got pulled did get hit by a laser from elsewhere but I do extensive evaluations of the situation long before and after the location in which the speeder was pulled over. I check bridges, underpasses, enbankements etc and there was no speed trap set up....

Again, I am fully aware of all the senarios, I may not post here often as I have a life to live, but believe me I am well informed on every aspect of Radar, Lidar, and Police entrapment tactics.

I will have to assume it was either radar being turned off after pull over / possible 2nd LEO with Laser....

Guess its time to buy some jammers....

Will also hook up the dash cam (been to lazy) so that I can post video footage of all these encounters moving forward. That is the best way for me to show you guys what I have been seeing.

Either Lidar or sitting there playing with himself.

On Stony (in summer) they park their SUVs up along the bank on the back side of the overpass and shoot oncoming traffic completely hidden, then chase you down. Seen it a ton of times.

They're using lidar. Watch some vids on youtube to see how they work.
