I just purchased my first radar detector, a Uniden R3. I am curious to see if there is anyone near me who is knowledgeable about enforcement in my area, I am about 45 mins north of Charlotte.

Hi! Great choice on the R3. You'll see a lot of 35.5 and some 34.7 from highway patrol. And some locals (Davidson, Cornelius, CMPD) use 33.8

Id look in to getting some jammers as well as laser is used pretty heavily too, especially once the weather gets warmer

I’m probably 1 hour north of you. Like @USAir767 posted and some locals are running K band.

Ditto....Rowan CO just north of CLT runs K and I've seen NCSP use K also...
I live in Rowan county, I have yet to get a single alert from any of the deputies I have passed since buying the detector, I'm hoping their particular vehicles either weren't equipped, or they had it off. Because if rowan county takes I/O as seriously as NSCHP does, I'm screwed. As far as notable encounters, Granite Quarry uses KA band, only seen C/O. Have not caught Salisbury using yet... Thank you for the input!

LIDAR is definitely a concern of mine. Unfortunately, I'm a full time student, and cannot afford jammers. At least not yet. Although I'd love some for sure.

Okay, nice to know, thank you. As far as Rowan County goes, passed one on Hwy 52 that was running c/o KA 35.5

I don't take a commute on 85 so as NCSHP goes I don't encounter them much. I'm more focused on CM against my locals, but thanks for the tip anyways.

You are correct
If not on an interstate your chance of being hit by lidar is limited to rich areas such as Corneilus (hit twice) seen dozens
Rear lidar hits are common on 74 and possibly on 601 and 27
Those 55 zone two lanes are not immune
It's not a matter of If but when with lidar on the interstate
Use the most sensitive detector available due to terrain

Never been to Cornelius, the interstates I traverse when I do, are 85, 77, and 485. Usually 85 is the one I frequent the most due to everything I like being in cabarrus/mecklenburg county, whereas Rowan has nothing...lol.

I've been personally shot on I77 oh maybe a dozen times in the last 2 years
Twice on 485
I85 they like to shoot you in the back from an overpass
Isnt that right @oldcelt

Yeah, whenever i'm on 85 i'm always craning my neck for on ramp hideouts & bridge lurking... that's my most frequented interstate.

I know this is an older thread but I figured it’s better to check in on this one rather than start a new one.
I’m south of Charlotte just over the SC border. I’ve been keeping a log of all legit encounters I’ve had in NC and I haven’t seen any legit K-Band at all. I mostly drive between Fort Mill, SC and Mooresville, NC. Has anyone seen K in Charlotte in the last few months? I’d really like to be able to use City mode but I don’t want to if it’s still a threat.

In the entire time I've had my detector so far, I haven't gotten hit once with K band in Charlotte. If they have K band at all, I'm guessing maybe Mecklenburg county might have a few outdated units. But that's probably still a stretch. I'd say you're in the clear to use city mode.

Over Christmas, I drove from Charlotte to Charlottesville I-77 - I-81 | Returning via Hwy 19 I-85 | I-85 to Atl and on to Jacksonville FL via I-75 & I-10 | returning via I-95 & I-77 and never once encountered LEO K band

I actually got my first real K band alert in the area over Christmas break but it was in Gaston Country near McAdenville not Mecklenburg county. I was really impressed with the range of the R3 with K at 60%. I had plenty of time and a nice ramp up so it was immediately different from a bsm false.

I think there are some towns on the north side of Mecklenburg that use K band. But, it's been a long time since I've encountered any traveling to charlotte. And there are places throughout NC that use it. It's one of those things that if you don't see it in your normal driving area, you can dial back the k band sensitivity.
