Good morning, all.
I had this 1.7 miles detection in the presence of dense fog. C/O 34.7 - frequency was displayed after 2-3 seconds of initial alert. I never had full signal strength, even at point black range (max was 7 to 8, you can hear it as well - it was bouncing up and down a little). That fact, and also the continued alert after I passed the LEO makes me think he was using his front antenna and shooting at the opposite direction...

In case anybody is wondering, 1.7 miles on a forward facing alert is killer! I've been in the process of changing my drive to work cars this week and so far all I've had time to do is get my R1 mounted on my perm Ebay mount above my rvm and hardwire it. I have a new dashcam on the way also. I'm going to install my CR97 last but not least! I got a 99 V6 Mustang to replace my 96 civic that bit the dust last week!

That's what I thought, @Kennyc56. Thanks for the input!
What was the mileage on the Civic (if you don't mind sharing)?

300,00 miles! It didn't owe me a damn thing! I got a great deal on this Mustang, now I have 2 of them again. It joins the Boss 302 in my stable! I am a hardcore Ford man anyway, but these little Hondas make great drive to work cars! Jane still has her 99 Accord, and I also have a 99 3.2 Acura TL that I need to put a trans in.

That's impressive. I have heard that the Hondas last quite a time. One of my co-workers had a Civic up until a year ago. When it was totally done, it was a little over 300K.

and you are still getting the punch thrus on the trucks
-- Double Post Merged: --
do you have the ka filter on @RoadDogg
Yes, I do have the Ka filter on. I was not on the RDF for 10-14 days. I am back..lol. I have been using the CR97 a lot lately. I have been getting some solid/decent 34.7 and 35.5 detections. I haven’t seen as much K-band lately.

@Bossdad71,
I double-checked the manual:
AQSPD (auto quiet speed) - 0 to 40 mph range. Mine is set to 40, which means anytime I drive 40 or under and I get alert, it will sound as your selected volume at first, and then it will auto reduce your volume to 1, and keep alerting. No filter changes are involved here.

AFSPD (auto filter speed) - also 0 to 40 range. I don't have mine enabled (selected 0). If say, I set it to 40, then anytime I drive 40 or under, it will auto apply maximum filters to all settings. By itself it would not change your volume, but if you are using above setting (AQSPD), then you get both changes. Once you are above 40, all settings are changed back to whatever you have them configured. I like this feature alot (tried it before, really makes difference when driving in TOWN, make note the key word town, not a decent sized city), but currently is off, as I am still testing my unit and want as many as possible legit alerts as soon as possible.

So that being said, here is another suggestion for future improvement: Increasing electable speed for AQSPD and AFSPD to 60mph? In cities we often have bypasses, or main avenues where PSL is 45, 50, even 55. So there the AQSPD and AFSPD wouldn't help.

Another thing I'd like to find out (if possible via your contacts at Whistler) is the AFSPD feature - when the manual says applies max filters, I understand K and Ka will be set to 5. But what happens to TFSR and FDSR? Do those 2 settings get altered or they stay as they have been configured by the user? That would help us understand how much of a delay is added to reaction time...
-- Double Post Merged: --

@Bossdad71,
Yes, I still had multiple alerts with same behavior from trucks. In fact, those were the majority of false alerts I got on my trip.
-- Double Post Merged: --

@RoadDogg,
I suspect with FDSR OFF, the trucks won't cause much of false alerts, unless they are very close. That feature does increase sensitivity quite a bit, especially on K band (at least that is my observation so far). I don't drive much on major interstates, so I cannot really compare my experience with yours in regards to BSM falses. Also, it all depends on the types of cars around, so it is pretty much impossible to compare. But I am curious - do you have TFSR ON?
@Marty K, Yes I do have the TFSR on.
With the FDSr off, I only get the normal BSM punch throughs that set off my R3s and iX, but the CR97 is a quiet detector for me with the FDSr off. I have both the X/K filter and Ka filters set to 1 normally.

@RoadDogg, I had mine like that about until 6 weeks ago. Indeed, with TFSR ON and FDSR OFF (also default filter levels of 1) it was very quiet. I liked it alot, but the concern was I/O and Q/T. I did a test with Stalker SL Ka 34.7, and it would only detect the radar if it was transmitting for at least 1.5 - 2 seconds! 1 second shots or quicker were 100% NOT detected.
With TFSR OFF, K filter 3, Ka 1 - I still get 3 out of 5 of the half second shots. Straight flat road I had 1.5 mile detection for K band speed sign, and 1.1 to 1.7 miles range on 34.7 over hills / around slight bends...

@Marty K, I actually turned the TFSR off today to try that for a while after seeing that you had it off to try that as I have pretty much had TFSR on for the most part since I bought the CR97. I really didn’t travel anywhere today other than to my daughter’s basketball game and around town, but I am going try TFSR off for awhile with FDSr off, X/K filter 1, Ka filter 1, Ka Max id and see how that works. Thanks for the information and suggestion.

No problem.
Just keep in mind that it will get noisy. It's a very sensitive detector. So with the TFSR OFF, you will definitely want to bump up the K filter couple of notches. I know it may sound counter-intuitive, but it's the design of the settings that makes sense:
TFSR is just ON or OFF. When ON - adds ~550 ms delay to reaction (in reality is closer to a full second, based on testing);
K or Ka Filters - 1 to 5, with each step adding 100 ms delay to reaction.
So at the end is whatever combination you find acceptable as a balance between noise (falses) and reaction time...

Finally my first Ka...an acceptable alert on c/o Ka today. (No video). It was OK
for a mellow 'drop anchor'. NYState trooper shooting on eastbound side shoulder but I didn't know that at alert time. I was on westbound, 2 lanes each direction pretty straight but little hills with a grassy median and metal guardrail between us. I got a half mile detection going about 60 in a 35 (ridiculous limit on what is a great hiway for 55 or 60...no redlights /no exits...just a speed trap). I had TFSR on, ka norm, all filters at 2. I think going forward I am going to keep TFSR off, run filters at 1 each and put FDSr back on. Even with volume at 1, the beeps are loud. Now trying highway mode with full auto quiet. Seems to only give one beep at alert instead of several beeps in city mode. The k/ka mis-id's seem less on Ka norm but the K/Ka thing is the reason for putting FSDr back on. If they can fix it that it would be great. The Ka alert just puts me in panic mode. All in all, I like the '97. Here on Long Island the gps redlight camera db is pretty accurate. Those cameras are sprouting up like dandelions here.

I have run mine with TFSR on mostly, and I just turned it off yesterday after reading what @Marty K suggested. I am going to try it that way for a while. I haven’t really had many radar encounters with police except for one 35.5 detection but I turned left before I encountered the officer. He was probably at a regular spot on that section of the street where they hide in waiting. I will X2 on the red light camera database being accurate on the CR97 in my travels in Memphis. I live outside of Memphis, TN, and Memphis has at least 30 if not more red light cameras. My son received two red light citations in the mail from the city of Memphis at $50 a ticket within 4 days (One was a Christmas Day ticket...Merry Christmas from Memphis...lol). I am thinking of hardwiring my CR97 or one of my R3s in his car if for no other reason than the red light camera database. He didn’t have a detector on either red light ticket in his car. I have tried many different filter settings, and I prefer (as of now) both the X/K filters and Ka filters at 1. I cannot run FDSr on mine as it significantly increases false alarms on my CR97. I hope you have a better experience with the FDSr on than me. I hope you enjoy your new CR97.

Good morning, all. I have been seeing this for awhile, but I believe after this encounter I can tell that this is consistent with the CR97's performance:

A legit Ka detection maybe displayed as 34.9 or 34.0 when there is a BSM present. On the video, my initial alert started as generic Ka. Couple of seconds later it displayed 35.5 (that is a legit source, you can see the LEO at 0:54; he's a local and I have detected him many times around the neighborhood). Then, with the ramp up it displayed 34.9 and few seconds later locked it out as K band BSM (double beep by the FDSr), but continued to display Ka 34.9. When I was about 2 - 3 seconds before passing by the LEO, it did display 35.5 again until the remainder of the alert:
Note that when I was very close to the LEO, my detector did not ramp up again. This is due to the BSM source interference. I cannot tell which vehicle trigger it, and how close it was at the end of the video, but the CR97 was still affected. I have seen this several times already. In most cases it is able to successfully alternate alerts between 2 different sources (one BSM, one legit), but its performance is unreliable then, because it either displays wrong frequency, or the ramp up is inaccurate. There has been a time or two when it actually stopped alerting altogether. There's been couple of times where it would alert to generic Ka full strength and it would lock up like that until I power cycle (that has happened with FDSR ON and OFF). There's also been a time where it would continue to display Ka alert long after the source is non-existent, but that was also in the presence of a BSM - see this test at Walmart's parking (I used the automatic doors as continuous false K source, and a Stalker 34.7 radar):
So the 34.9 can be displayed when the source is either 35.5 or 34.7 - I have confirmed both options, more than once. The 34.0 has been very rare, maybe 3 times since I have had the detector. That one I cannot say for sure, but I think is due to BSM false from some vehicles that are also detected as Ka 33.8.
The bad thing about this whole situation is that the CR97 also alerts to some vehicles' BSM as Ka 35.5 at first, then switches to K. In fact, I had a BMW cross-over that did exactly that - alerted as 35.5 Ka, then locked it as K band ####. So when you get such alerts, you cannot tell for sure if it is a false, or there is a legit source near by...
@Bossdad71, I hope you can pass that info to your contact at Whistler...

so just doing a little math in my head, well not really, i got the ole calculator out. it was around 23 seconds when you got the second alerts, and if you were going 70mph that's around 104 per second, times that by 23 seconds, so around 2,392 feet. Just shy of a half miles, in fog. i wonder where the kill zone was for you...

@Bossdad71,
Yes, all my videos are on my youtube channel.

I would imaging the kill zone was at the point I crested the hill and had a visual on the LEO (same on his perspective). But my impression is that he was targeting the oncoming traffic with his front antenna...

I was finally able to get my CR97 up and hardwired in the Mustang I got to drive to work! I hardwired it along with my R1 and new dash cam. I used an on/off/on toggle switch on the ground side of the R1 and CR97 so I can run 1 at a time without having to turn each detector off or unplugging them. I now also have a kill switch just in case I ever need one! All I have to do is switch it to the center and everything is off. My dash cam is always on however as long as the car is running. I missed my CR97 last week! I am going to run it this week and see what happens! My R1 kicked @ss last week and was as quiet as a mouse even with TFS off and K filter off on highway mode! I am running 1.48 on both of my R1's and loving it!

i see that now, i was speed reading. so you had a few seconds before you crested that hill, minus that long range detector when you first got on the ramp. thank you for sharing. im pretty sure i subscribed to your channel

Yes, I see you are subscribed.
And yes, when I saw the 34.7 on the ramp, I knew he was up ahead, on the usual hiding spot. Last 2 times I passed by him (both times was raining, last Thursday, and this morning) my radar was totally quiet. He was positioned exactly as on the video. I am guessing he was very selective, as oppose to running C/O on the day with the dense fog...

Yep, FDSR was driving me nuts this morning driving in packed traffic. I shut FDSR off. I also decided to shut off TFSR, bumped K filter to 5 and Ka to 1 but put back Ka max. I have noticed that the ka/k issue has not reared its ugly head yet. K isn't a real threat for me here so k5 sounds scary but it works for me. I wonder if TFSR is somehow partially behind the ka/k issue. I paased my normal k sign and it seems ok at k5. Also, more BSMs but they show as k and not ka. More driving needed, but I think I am getting this unit to where I want it. I am pretty satisfied with its overall sensitivity.
