Alright!

Now that the holidays are (finally) over, some of the ongoing RDFNET projects are finally coming to completion, RDFGSv1 is back up, the raffle is done/in the final stages of prizes being sent out, our server has been moved to the OVH US datacenter, and I've completed a couple dry-runs of the XenForo 1.x to 2.x upgrade here at home, we can finally start talking about the upcoming XenForo 2.x forum platform upgrade happening on our production environment (and whew, those were just some of the larger tasks we've been dealing with over the past month or so, don't get me started on many of the other things happening behind the scenes)...!

So let me give you a basic rundown on what we're thinking regarding the XenForo 2.x upgrade...:

1.) Upgrade of Xenforo 1.x to 2.x will happen. This is not a platform change like vBulletin -> XenForo was, so this will not require much downtime at all.

2.) For about 5-7 days, the XenForo 2.x install will remain in a near-vanilla state (vanilla theme, with a couple modifications to the logo/etc to RDF the place up a bit, aesthetically) to ensure that nothing wonky/unexpected/whatever happens. I've already done testing locally so I'm not expecting any issues but making sure that normal use doesn't affect the upgrade is not something I can reasonably test for, and it would suck to install all the addons/everything to find out there was an issue. Again, this is just a precation, I really am not expecting any issues. This will also give you guys a bit of time to gradually work your way through the new functions/features/settings that come with XenForo 2, before we literally blow your mind with another 100+ premium/custom addons, lol...

3.) After those 5-7 days are up and show no nonsense, we will begin gradually rolling out the red carpet from addon hell (see below for a preview of what's to come). Additionally, during the 5-7 vanilla period, I'll be working on our new theme. So expect after the vanilla period is over, various changes to the looks of the forum still start to happen. And yes, I will be creating a light theme, and a dark theme, hand-in-hand. So once the theme is done, you'll be able to choose from a light or a dark RDF theme :). Additionally, XF2 has a ton of customization potential, even down to the user (you) level - so you will be able to tweak things ever further if you so choose.

4.) This step of the process shouldn't really exist because #4 above covers the end :shifty: .

Okay, in regards to us needing your input. This forum is just as much your forum as it is mine, as it is the rest of the admins, as it is the rest of the staff, so forth and so on. I'm serious about that! So if you have any suggestions on things you'd like to see as part of the forum - functions/features/whatever, suggest it! Here's a few places where you can see what is available - what you'll want to be looking for are XenForo 2 addons:

XenForo 2 Add-ons – ThemeHouse
XenForo 2 Addons | Brivium - Premium XenForo Addon / Style Club
xenmade.com: XenForo 2
XF2 Addons
XenForo 2

I've been going through thousands of XenForo 2 addons/tweaks/theme frameworks over the past couple of weeks and believe me when I tell you that we got some really awesome things lined up for our XenForo 2 setup. Here's just about 1/3 of the addons/stuff I've bookmarked which are more likely than not to get installed on our XenForo 2 board:

chromelist.png

... and the list keeps getting longer by the day. Right now, in our XenForo 1.x install, we have 109 addons installed. Saying that RDF is highly customized is an UNDERSTATEMENT, ...

I saved a bunch of screenshots of new features/addons/functions that you guys will like/may find interesting. I'm not going to go through them all and label them or anything, since this is just a quick sneak peak of certain addons that we're considering installing (holy screenshot of death warning):

Anyways, this process is actually rather simple, it's what comes afterwards that takes the most amount of time (configuring, setting up new addons, theme design).

And of course, what everyone is here for: when? I am looking to initiate this process around the end of this weekend, so let's say overnight Saturday the 12th is upgrade eve, and Sunday the 13th at 3AM CST the upgrade!

Let me know if you have any questions! Thanks!

I did successfully stand up a ZenForo2 instance. If you unexpectedly run into a roadblock and I might be able to help you, hit me up.

Sounds good, I've ran RDF's actual upgrade process in an offline VM container here at home so I don't expect any issues but I guess we'll see on Sunday ;).

I very excited about this. With all the information out there I feel the I integration of this info combined with app side of countermeasures are under built/utilized.

I think the timing of this thread got it buried.
When the time comes, one of those rare RDF all user emails would be appropriate.

Yeah once the upgrade is known to be stable I'm sure we'll do an RDF-wide email, if only to mention that we didn't get hacked or anything (going from a fully-themed site to a vanilla site overnight is SUSPECT), lol.

This situation is a bit fluid, hope to know more about what's going on later today. I spoke with someone at my complex and I guess they are activating fiber for the other half of it right now, not sure why that has anything to do with my fiber drop but they are out there at the end of the street none the less. Will keep everyone posted, it's a good thing I didn't start this the other night, might have turned into a crappy situation in regards to downtime.

Posted from my SM-N960U using the RDF Mobile App!

--- DOUBLEPOST MERGED ---

Okay, I am looking at doing this around midnight tonight everyone! Looks like connectivity on my end is not having issues anymore so I'll be resuming plans at the aforementioned time.

--- DOUBLEPOST MERGED ---

I may end up doing this earlier than later. The downtime is really very minimal - it's mainly just for the server backup (right before initiating the upgrade) - that's the longest downtime (about 15 minutes). We'll see.

--- DOUBLEPOST MERGED ---

Okay I'm going to perform the upgrade at 10PM CST. So 40 minutes from now. This will be a very short downtime - probably 30-45 minutes at most. Soon this place is going to look like this:

xf2xssx.jpg

Lol, so don't freak out. That is vanilla XF2. We will be bringing this place back to RDF-style in no time!

Ugh that's too vanilla. Starting a pill for those that don't want this upgrade.

I am temporarily disabling all caching/CDN capabilities to prevent anything from going sub-critical before I need it to be super-critical during the upgrade, so expect some slow loading of certain things, just temporarily!

I'm doing a FULL post-upgrade server backup at 6:30AM. It will take 15 minutes to do. Expect only 15-20 minutes of downtime, that's it!
