Any V1 users jumping to the recently announced R7?

I had Qty. 2 - R3 burn up due to the high heat in South Texas.
That’s odd. I’ve had no issue. I keep mine hardwired high and tight against the headliner and behind a 5% tint eyebrow strip. I wonder if it wouldn’t fare as well mounted down in the middle of the windshield baking in the sun, maybe? Is that how you run yours?

The downfalls that I have seen in the R1/R3 Unidens still concern me.
1) OLED screen burn in. (I drive 5,000 miles per month, I'd wear that screen out.)
....
I DO NOT want the detector to light up for any reason.
These seem to be conflicting statements. I had no issue with my preorder R3, but I run it in dark mode, which means it lights up only when there’s an alert. And with the R7’s ambient light sensor ideally it will only have as much brightness upon alert as appropriate for the situation.

You also said you didn’t want a plastic case, but I’ve had no problem with my R3, and I love how lightweight it is. To me that’s a non-issue.

I think if you look at any of @BlueV1 's install threads you may understand what he was trying to say, or what I believe he was trying to say. Is V1 is more of a black box, he has a custom display on his dash, a remote display that is. He is also used his electronical brilliance and rewired factory switches on his car to do really neat things. He is one button and every single countermeasure in his car turns off. but he doesn't want his radar detector have any lights coming out of it. If I'm wrong I'm sure he'll correct me.

That's how I run my detectors as well. I'd think that would help. Still, it's enough of an issue with R1/R3 that people defend their practice of removing their Rs when getting out of the car, etc.

I'm all for the ambient sensor which the V1's have had forever. I do think that will help but the best option would be to use a display that doesn't degrade with use in the first place. OLED doesn't seem like the best choice. My old Galaxy S4 had OLED and has permanent VVaze images on it. :)
My current Motorola doesn't and won't.

Furthermore, with a non-OLED display, there's no need to shift the image around, dim if you don't want to, etc.

You also said you didn’t want a plastic case, but I’ve had no problem with my R3, and I love how lightweight it is. To me that’s a non-issue.
Personal preference. :)

It's actually one button to activate after starting and 2 kill switches for VA, or LEO contact. :D

I would definitely have a difficult time with a display on the front of my detector after about 19 years of Concealed Display and app use!

FWIW, I don't know that I would ever want to give up JBV1's extra features. Last night I was heading east and saw this wall of precipitation on JBV1 and decided to stop in OKC.
It's little stuff like this that has really spoiled me!

Are there any new Radar threats in my area that the V1 can't handle? hmm...

As a longtime V1 user, tried the Magnum, Redline, R3 - all after joining to forum to see what (if anything) I was missing... sold them all shortly after testing them. V1 still permanently mounted by passenger visor. NEVER look at the V1 display as the V1CD and V1RA (remote audio provides the alerts close to the driver and does not annoy my passenger!) in my instrument cluster provides ALL information I need to react appropriately. Remote mute button on washer stalk provides an easy mute option.

The V1 is awesome where I do almost ALL of my driving. It has not let me down, and I dont feel the need to move to another detector JUST because there is a new detector available.

Concealed display is a MUST HAVE for me. If I do move the V1 to a loaner or rental, I have a spare V1CD ( and soon a V1LE) in my travel kit,

V1Driver and JBV1 are icing on the cake! I use them for gps muting (V1Driver I feel has the better algos on this) Their logging capabilities are awesome (great to review frequency alerts and traps after the fact) and I will use their frequency displays to see what I am being hit with. the capabilities to box mute, etc are well beyond any other RD can do without an external interface!

Until a new threat appears or leo tactics change in my driving area, or my driving needs change . no need to upgrade.
Moon sniff were great with the R3, but in my driving areas, they were soon classified as FALSE alerts, as they did not help find an LEO that would be in my driving path.

I also have dual NR-DSPs installed, which get run on long highway trips or out of state where different Radar tactics may be in play. (it is overkill on my daily drives!)

SO, even though I may pick up an R7 eventually (after initial testing by other RDF uniden fanatics) to test for myself, Based on what has be presented by uniden, I dont anticipate it replacing my V1 just yet.

Say what you want, but ultimately every driver has a great selection of available RD's to them, which will best meet their driving style, location and situational awareness needs....

Definitely! The difference is that assuming the R7 is otherwise well behaved, you can shave or in fact chop the sensitivity down to V1 or lower levels with the ability to let it out of the cage when appropriate. There are certainly long distance interstate drives I do occasionally with a high probability of I/O threats where I’d love a moon sniff blip or two to let me know someone out there’s is gunning for us.

The V1 came out like four presidents ago. Just saying. :)
Three. The last isn't.

Uniden isn't beta testing the R7. They have a platform to build off of already. The R3 and R5 were beta tested. They're coming in with experience now.
It's a new design. With plenty of scope for a whole new crop of QC problems.

As a tech nerd I just love all the data JBV1 provides me with the V1. It would be hard to give that all up. The R7 would make for a great candidate in my girlfriends car. But I don't think I'm ready to part with my V1

I'll be checking on R7 problems after release, there'll undoubtedly be plenty. But even then I'm unlikely to change. For the simple reason that the R7 will not give me what V1 and JBV1 has.
Not least of which will be the ability to have a totally hidden installation but being able to keep a full info display if and/or when our safety Nazis ban detectors.
Then there's build quality, V1 is made of proper materials. Like a good tank.
As I've said before, 500 - 700 metres more range, if the R7 actually has that, is irrelevant for me.
For my purposes the R7 will be closer, but no cigar.

Has the Holy Grail finally been achieved? Could be and the other arrow makers might be shaking but I dont think I'll replace my V1 just yet. I've been running one for sooo long it's like a good pair of shoes. It's ramp up is ingrained in my subconscious and I just know how it works. With JBV1 it's unparalleled with information and my other CMs on my car. So I'll wait a bit, let the R7 shake out the problems if any. My GF might want to trade her R3 for one, but we'll see.

If/when the safety Nazis ban radar detectors, the Spectre will still be able to sniff out that V1 because VR refuses to incorporate LNAs on K and Ka band circuits (or an alternate design that minimizes RF emissions). Agreed about the build quality it is very good.

I guess when people are used to RD's that only beep or brap, they don't need no stinkin' remote display! How will the R7 deal with a dark display? Dark arrows are sort of useless....

Different tones for front and rear would work.

For those that enjoy the company of a talking RD, it can say Ka Band Front, Rear or Side, but I cant stand it, and that is what I dislike about ALP Connect and the NR voice....

I was thinking more along the lines of changing tones... like a low tone to high tone when it's behind you and then a high tone to low tone when it's in front of you. Instead of different pitches you could use completely different tones one after another also.

I'm not a big fan of interrupting the ramp with voices myself. I do use frequency announcement for my R series detectors but only so I can catch the frequency on the video later.

Hey @Deacon I used Blendmount rear view mirror mount for my past R3's.

And still use blendmounts for the V1's.

Even on one car where it failed due to heat I had a sun shield up that blocked like 75% of the direct sun light. They just hate the heat and have no protection.
Again never an issue with Escort or V1.

Nope! I love running my V1 high on windshield in dark mode with CD in the instrument cluster and V1D in my pocket doing its thing automatically. R7 just won’t have that and it looks too darn big to put anywhere on my windshield. Seems like two V1 stacked on one another. Even if they had a CD there’s still no good place to mount that thing, even in the E-Class without taking up a lot of real estate on my window.

The ramp, arrow accuracy and transition, filtering (3.8952), respectable performance, and just overall solidness of the unit is really unmatched. Don’t see myself dumping my V1 until there is a monumental shift in how police obtain a vehicles speed.

I just returned home from a thousand mile round trip. V1 did great. I may change my mind, but for now, I will not be switching to the R7.
