I'd stay with the V1 as well unless the R7 outperforms it (and the R3) by a considerable margin. For the money, the R3 is arguably the best RD out there although it does have its flaws, most notably the inability to sweep the lower K band range.
The R7 will sweep lower in the K band range.
-- Double Post Merged: --
I remember how excited I was the day my V1 arrived. It was like about 30 Christmas' wrapped up into 1. I couldn't decide between a V1 and a Redline, so I ordered both, but there was just something special about the V1 that I couldn't wait to get my hands on it.

I have a R3 that I mostly use now, and I've ordered an R7, but I am still patiently waiting for a new V1. I've been waiting for 2 or 3 years so my patience is running thin, but I'd still be the first in line for a new V1 the day they're available. The build quality on my V1 is awesome. I'd be perfectly happy with a new V1 just having the same look as they have today, but with longer range (and preferably a built in way to lock out falses). I hope one is coming.
I agree the V1 is a work horse. Mine is 14 years old and still works great. It is in bad need of a update but I will not update it until they come out with something more recent. I can't justify spending the money on a 2 year old upgrade that doesn't detect MR**. Really like valentine though as a company they build their detectors here for one and they allow you to upgrade no matter how old your unit is. I'm fine with how the V1 looks. I actually really like the display it gives me what I need and is easy to read. Just keep hoping for a update from them.

I'm going to put both devices through testing. I have never had a V1 so I finally bought one while I wait for the R7 to ship. We will see if the R7 is worth jumping for.

I hope you bought the bluetooth module. It makes it much easier to set custom sweeps (which you should do) and allows for the detector to be paired with your phone so you can use different apps to reduce falses. V1Driver is the app I use, and there's another one out there that many like but I don't remember the name of it. I could be wrong (please don't persecute me if I am wrong!), but the one I can't remember the name of is for Android phones and V1Driver is for iPhones.

Yes I got the V1CLE with it. And the app you are thinking of is JBV1, however V1Driver exists for Android as well. I have both iOS and Android so I will be making use of them both. Glad to hear good things about V1Driver as I was just getting ready to purchase it.

Yeah, I've used V1Driver since it was first released. There was another app before JBV1 that many liked (can't remember it's name either!) but it was just for Android, and V1Driver was the first app for the iPhone that provided similar functionality to it. I'm not sure if all of the apps have auto lockout functionality, but it's something that I really liked about V1Driver.

Lol maybe YaV1? But yeah as far as I've been reading, on Android JBV1 seems to be the way to go and V1Driver for iOS. Excited to try them both!

Yeah, YaV1 was what I was thinking of, and I agree JBV1 is the way to go now between those two. I'll be interested in your thoughts on the V1 in its forum once you get it and play around with it for a while.

I'm gonna give R7 a go. I've been a V1 user since 2004 and have had every hardware/firmware update since - I've got a V1 for each of my two vehicles. I've been happy with its performance, but I'm ready to try something new. If the R7 doesn't work out, I'll either sell it on eBay or use it for rental/demo cars for work or when I travel.

Do we know for sure Uniden is not offering concealed display? That’s a deal breaker for me.

Up to now Uniden has not offered a concealed display so it's doubtful there will be one in the near future.

To be fair Uniden wont offer these extras because even uniden doesnt see the R7 as something you keep for a long time. They are just building it good enough until the next iteration comes out. So on and so forth. to compare it to the V1 is like comparing apples and oranges in-terms of company philosophy.

Agreed - hopefully at a minimum, Bluetooth and an app are in the future. R9 maybe?

The sooner they put out an app the sooner it will be a valuable asset. i doubt the first couple versions will be smooth sailing.

Not to mention the R7 cost $200 more. In terms of value/performance/long-term cost of ownership the V1 is probably the best RD out there. You can always trade it in for an upgrade or sell it. as the V1 tends to hold it's value. As for the competition, some have better sensitivity or filtering but lack in other areas. The V1 has it's strengths, most notably accurate arrows and the ability to fine tune it via apps. To say the V1 is dead is understatement and even without any major hardware changes over the last few years it has stayed competitive.

Even if they did an app, it's unlikely to be anywhere near as good as JBV1. They will not put in the hours JB has done, nor be a receptive to ideas. They're a business.

As long as what we really need and want included a broad 33.8 sweep.
FYI - being that i encounter very little legit 33.8 in a few know areas I muted 33.700 to 33.900 with a PT of >3 dots on JBV1. I havent heard a cobra false in months.. Looking back through my alert log data on JBV1 for several months, i saw that the cobras i encounter rarely go above 2 dots and never over 3. Just last week, a leo from another town that has 33.8 was traveling through my town for some reason.... i encountered him head on, on a 2 lane hilly highway, i got nearly 1 mile warning on him and the ramp up was immediately apparent to me that it was legit and not a false. I was like WTMF?!! :shifty: as i slowed until I saw him and saw that he was from another town because there is no 33.8 where I drive.

Point being if you don't have a lot of 33.8, since we don't have the option not to sweep for it, you can mute box it out with a punch through window like I did and have a quiet ride, while still easily being able to pick out a legit threat.

Sidenote: This is why despite what anybody else says in this entire damn thread, whether you think V1 is antiquated or not, the fact remains that you flat can't do this with any other detector and why V1 is still in the game.

I have been running a r3 but have been considering moving back to the V1. I miss the arrows. I know it's in my head but the arrows make me trust the detector so much more. The V1 just has a history of being solid. The R7 is tempting but considering while I drive a lot my commute in my actual car is really short or I ride the grom which I would be amazed if I could get a speeding ticket on I don't know that it is worth it. I may try to sell the r3 and pick up a r7 in a few months when they start popping up on the used market.
