Can I please ask why Vortex said to turn on ka bands 2,4,5,6,8
4,6 are my questions
Will turning on 4.6 slow r7 down alot?
Choose the individual Ka frequency ranges where you’d like the detector to scan for.
  • Ka 1: 33.399 – 33.705 GHz
  • Ka 2: 33.705 – 33.903 GHz (MPH 33.8 radar guns)
  • Ka 3: 33.903 – 34.191 GHz
  • Ka 4: 34.191 – 34.587 GHz (Stalker 34.7 radar guns that drift low)
  • Ka 5: 34.587 – 34.803 GHz (Stalker 34.7 radar guns)
  • Ka 6: 34.803 – 35.163 GHz (Stalker 34.7 radar guns that drift high)
  • Ka 7: 35.163 – 35.379 GHz
  • Ka 8: 35.379 – 35.613 GHz (Decatur & Kustom Signals 35.5 radar guns)
  • Ka 9: 35.613 – 35.701 GHz
Stalkers can drift high or low just like you pasted. It is for out of tune guns, most people will only need 2,5,8. However you can see a lot of people with 2,5,6,8 as most guns go out of tune up the range, and some can go down. Run highway and see what you have around you.

Everyone, just picked up my R7 and for some reason my Ka band seems as sensitive as my escort 9500ix. The warning is not that far in advance when compared to my 9500ix. I set it up the way Vortex had the general settings on his website. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Probably not firmware related, but just checking.. did you do a factory reset after updating the firmware?

I would give it more than two days to form an opinion. An R7 will be much better than a 9500ix if working properly. When comparing the two detectors, you’re not running them at the same time are you? Also how are the LEOs positioned when you’re getting Ka hits? Are they stationary, moving, on axis, off axis? What’s your terrain like?

Lots of questions, but details always help us help you better.

How are you determining sensitivity / range?

I did do a factory reset after the updating the firmware. Not running them at the same time, in fact the 9500 is already in another car. The Ka hits have been stationary most of the time, every morning i get hit with 34.676 and 34.724 in a school zone. The terrain there is fairly flat with a small up and down hill. This morning, heading on a hilly highway, i got one Ka hit then before you know it i saw the radar on the other side of the highway when i immediately got the full Ka hit. In this case, my 9500 seems to do way better. We are always looking for radar when i get a Ka hit way before i see a police office with their radar on. I don't want to jump to conclusions but i'm wondering whether i should return the r7 and get a max 360c but worried about the freezing issues and etc. I like some of the testing the 360c doesn't seem to be in the lower portion of the detectors but i would like better BSM filtering and auto lock outs is what I miss from my 9500.

Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

The Ka radars are in my area every morning. The police officers park in a school zone on a busy street to get traffic in and out of the school so their radar is always on. I just found out that their radars are 34.676 and 34.724 which i couldn't see on the 9500ix. The range is a little better but not by much. The terrain is flat with a small hill where the radars sit.

Im still on the brd delivery firmware and had a disappointing 35.5 detection...within line of site of the flashing lights..flat straight terrain..zero ramp up just full tilt...I factory reset the detector before I ever used it...I believe I'm going to be cautious with the r7 and give it sometime. Maybe another reset.

The officer was out his Tahoe when I passed so I doubt he just turned on his ka.

That's a good idea. Just know that 35.5 is very directional so of all the frequencies, it's the toughest detection I come across. I like to think of it as the laser of the Radar World. (please excuse my mild exaggeration)
That being said, you think it should have done better. So, if you would keep an eye on it and report back, that would be appreciated.

Do you have a dash cam and if not, try your best to record with a cell phone since you run into these LEOs every morning? Posting video footage on here especially when you think you’re experiencing issues really helps. It will show the exact terrain and how the LEOs were positioned. The way their radar gun is angled can make a big difference as well (straight at you or perpendicular to your direction of travel).

I wouldn’t give up on the R7 just yet but that’s up to you. The 360c is a good detector as well. The lockup issue has been addressed with firmware updates and I don’t think the lockup’s are happening nearly as much. At least I haven’t seen as many reports on here. It is a quieter detector as far as BSM goes, but you can also adjust the settings on the R7 as well to help quiet it down. Try running Advanced with K at 50%, K filter On, TSF On, K Block On. With a proper working R7, you will get better range with the R7 vs 360c. I’m not knocking the 360c, just fact. Auto lockouts are supposed to be coming to the R7, but if you want them right now, the 360c has them as you know.

Something else to do to just in case something is going on on the firmware side. You might want to try re-loading the firmware with the recovery mode box checked, followed by another factory reset, adjust your settings again, and then see if that makes a difference. Recovery mode reloads everything from scratch. You shouldn’t lose user marks or lockouts.

No video sorry..oh I'm not giving up on it by any means..just like all new detectors I know there is going to be issues/bugs..I see the potential in the R7..this may have just been a fluke with this 35.5 and it was early morning..may just be user perception error..

Thanks for your help! No dashcam footage, I will defintily not give up on the R7. There is a decent amount K band usage here in the smaller towns that I travel through so i am worried about filtering out too much K band will make me vulnerable. I would say that Ka band is mostly what I see outside of the smaller towns i drive through though.

I will do the recovery mode, should i reupdate the firmware if it takes me back to the previous firmware?

Terrain is important...any trees, buildings, other cars? If it’s flat with no obstacles, that would be due to sensitivity... Otherwise, terrain is almost always in play...that will minimize real world benefits of the higher sensitivity. I’ve done some testing myself with various ka/k guns and, even in the flat ohio, it is damn near impossible to eliminate the effects of terrain on range. Even a hill that is 10 feet high and spread over a mile could truncate the range of the more sensitive detector. Just a thought.

Thank you for your input and help. The street i am referring to is fairly flat with a small hill and the Ka's are in the same spot every morning. But I do notice they are pointed not directly at the traffic coming towards them so it is off axis. I am able to use this R7 for 10 more days before making a decision but I think I will stick to the r7.
Reading about the 360C, it is great but not too sure about the range from what I read. The BSM filtering seems better but at what cost? I don't want to weed out too much K band because i travel through smaller towns that only use K band for their radar. I do like automatic lock outs but I'm hoping we will get them on the R7 this year. I do like the fact that you can change all of the settings on an app and not the device......I'm not sure i want to sacrifice range for some options or bells and whistles.

Start Advanced where you want, 90% or 70% for K and then if you’re comfortable with it say at 70%, try 60% and then if you’re not comfortable at 60%, go back to 70%. You just have to experiment. Keep it at the PSL until you have your detector dialed in and you trust it.

It won’t take you back to the previous firmware. Just select the 1.22 firmware again and check the recovery mode box and then start download.

Best thing to do is buy a 360c & compare it to the R7. Don’t run them at the same time as you probably know, but always like to throw that in there. You make like the 360c better and there’s nothing wrong with that. What works for one person may not work for someone else

Thank you for the info above as far as settings. I may buy the 360C and try them one after the other.

My understanding is that it goes by the original filing date. At least that's what I've read on here around the time the R7 was announced. I'm no expert, so maybe @UnidenSupport will chime in.
As a general rule, I avoid commenting on anything regarding patent law unless I have information that has been looked over by a legal team.
