Well, it wouldn't be right if I didn't RDFGSv2-bomb this thread, so... www.rdforum.org: RDFGS 2.0: What's in a name?

Waze is going to be a data source for the RDFGSv2, but the RDFGSv2 will essentially be the radar/laser/detector/jammer/hobbyist/enthusiast/general traveler/anybody's go-to product/app/service. I recommend taking a look at some of the RDFGSv2 threads/posts and lurk around - for anyone who is interested in a Waze on Steroids product - and start providing development suggestions so we can add the features of what you guys want into this app.

We ARE moving forward with this application/project (RDFGSv2), as January marches on we will have more details available.
This is pretty awesome and must be what keeps the RD CEO's up in bed late at night. Hopefully it spurs them into development and improving their products and collaborating with devs doing projects like these.

I didn't start using Waze until it was integrated into my car's screen with Apple Car Play. Now it's my go-to navigation app and enjoy having another tool in my arsenal.

I also have Waze crash out on me fairly often when it's not the app in the foreground. Not always, but often. I've even had it quit in the middle of a voice announcement "In 1 mile, turn--". It's very annoying. It's been going on for a while now, but currently it's running on an iPhone 8 Plus, iOS 12.1.2.

One great YouTube video is guy being stopped by cops for using cell phone. He asks cop “do you mean this?” as he held up something that looked like a phone. Cop sai “yep” and guy said it’s my cookie. Sure enough it was an edible cookie that looked exactly like a cell phone. Lol. I suggest people in areas with aggressive “cell police” start their own cell cookie club.

--- DOUBLEPOST MERGED ---

A little over 7% don’t use Waze. That leaves a huge number of us as users.
As the OP I said those using Waze right now are early adopters. Some folks said it’s been out there a long time (and it has). But I think if a poll were taken of cell phone users who drive, Waze users or even those knowledgeable that it exists, is still a huge minority (oxymoron?). Regardless, 93% Waze users here. I bet if you went to 100 other Forums and did this poll you wouldn’t break 30%. That would include car Forums other than those that dealt specifically with radar or tickets etc. not that it means anything but I think we’re still on the cusp of the second tech wave in our history. Interesting times in which we live. Only when looked back upon far into the future will historians put together their thesis on the social effects this has had on mankind (yep, mankind.).
I’m just jabbering away with no real purpose so bye for now.

Okay, I have a question or six. I don't currently use Waze, but would like to give it a try. Does everyone here just use the latest version and let your apps update automatically to the latest all the time? The reason I ask is because I've done a little reading, and it seems like some of the older versions worked better and had more features than the latest. (also no ads) I have my apps set to NOT update automatically on Google Play, so I want to find a version of Waze that is/was considered one of the most stable, usable, and has the best features. There are places to find the older versions, but I don't know which ones to look for. Like I said, I don't currently use Waze, so I'm not familiar with features that might have made some older versions the best. Thanks!

Naa, just download the latest version and go. Right now ! ;)
Edit: You could always downgrade later if you wanted. ???? Not sure about this one.
Also please make sure you send reports to help the community.
You will wonder why it took you so long to try it.

I use Waze on a Nexus 7 I picked up. Pair it to either my Verizon phone or a Sprint hotspot I got from Freedompop and pair the audio thru my BT earpiece along with my phone. Use a RAM mount for the tablet and one for the phone. The Garmin also runs while on trips as a back up in case I hit dead zones for data (not uncommon here) Got plenty of options for Nav and audio entertainment while on trips that way and the cheap tablet makes seeing Waze a little easier.

Along with the CB,scanner, UHF/VHF analog and digital amateur radio gear and DMR hotspot..I got all kindsa things to break the monotony of a long distance drive.

Anyone noticed the updates Google is doing to Google Maps ? They are now integrating PSL and police reporting...among other things. I wonder if Google is doing this to defund Waze ?

From what I can tell, Google Maps isn't pulling Waze data... at least immediately (running side by side). In our area, I don't even see a 1/10th of the alerts on GM that I see on Waze, so it'll a LONG time before I make a move full time.

How do you downgrade? I went to the latest version and I cannot stand the auto zoom function.

With previous versions, I kept the field of view fixed at about a four mile radius so that I had wide-area situational awareness. With the latest version, the damn auto zoom zooms the view in so close, giving you such a short view of the road ahead, that you don't learn about something until you're nearly on top of it.

When you're on an interstate, it does no good to find out about a traffic jam after you've gone past the last exit that could provide a detour around it.

This one change to auto zoom has taken Waze from what used to be a pretty serious and useful aid to navigation down to that of some kind of toy.

I know that Google just implemented new Google Maps API changes and they've been pushing them hard. It's possible that this is just an extended feature of the Google Maps API.

I can't imagine that they would want to defund Waze - since they own Waze - but hey, that'd be better for us lol (RDFGSv2)...

Google has abandoned stuff it has bought before. Picasa, Bump & Flock come to mind right off the bat. I think they buy those companies to get their IP so they can integrate it into their existing products. IMHO, Waze and Google Maps are redundant for directions, just move the crowd sourcing aspects of Waze to Maps and boom, now you're only having to support one app moving forward.

My fear is they will not support 2 map apps that do the same thing. So...which one will win ?????
Agreed better for RDFGSv2 and us if they do kill one or the other. Just my 2 cents.

Agreed. I just found it interesting that Google was adding features to Google Maps that are in Waze. To be clear I am not advocating anyone move to GM from Waze. Including me. :)

What version of VVaze are you running now? On what platform? And what OS version is that device running on?

I don't see any of these complaints that you guys are speaking about and I believe I have the most up to date OS on my device with the latest version of VVaze.

Let's see:
Apple iPhone 8 plus
iOS 12.1.3
Waze release 4.47.3.0 (the most recent version that I can find on iTunes).

I'll add that the zoom level fluctuates depending on my speed. Stop at an intersection and it zoom in to cover only about a 100 yard radius.

Accelerate from a standing start and Waze zooms out as my speed increases, topping out at interstate speeds, where I only get a view of about the next 1,000 feet ahead. If I manually increase the radius of the view around my vehicle and hold my speed steady, that zoomed out view lasts for about 10 seconds, then it automatically zooms back in to give me only the 1,000 feet ahead. FRUSTRATING! The constant automatic zooming in and zooming messes with my sense of scale. It takes time to calculate how far ahead a hazard is. It also denies me info about things going on a few thousand yards ahead...soon enough to actually detour around a bad situation.

I keep taking my hand off the wheel and messing with the phone screen every 10 or 20 seconds to keep the wide-area view I find useful and like. Knowing this is hazardous, I end up just shutting Waze off..

Thanks for your interest.

Please help!

Is there an inside joke I'm missing regarding you calling it VVaze or something, lol...?

This may sound stupid to some but stuff like this skews our forum's search function search results for people who may be trying to find out something which was mentioned in one of your posts. If they do a search for 'waze' plus another word that was mentioned in your post, in various circumstances your posts won't even show up.

We always tell people to USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION!!! for things that have already been discussed but if they aren't going to find an answer because of purposely misspelled words, it kind of defeats the whole purpose.

I mean if that's what you are going for then okay (and not sure I understand that reasoning) but if that's the case then I'd have to say that is a pretty low thing to do. I'm not saying that this is why you're doing it either - I don't know why - that's why I made this post. I'm just trying to understand as well as make people aware of the implications that aren't always immediately seen when they do stuff like this...
