I have noticed lately that this forum causes high GPU and CPU usage on my computer.

My system is:

2018 Macbook Pro 2.7ghz quad core
16gb ram
AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 eGPU with an Akito Node Pro and Caldigit Thunderbolt 3 dock
OSX Mojave

I have verified this happens with both the eGPU and the internal GPU. The behavior only happens when the forum page is in the foreground; if I leave it open and switch to a different tab, the GPU usage immediately drops to near zero. Further, gpu usage doubles again if I have two instances of Chrome open side by side. The usage is significant enough to spin up the internal fans and affect battery life.

Hope this helps,

Thanks

It's the snow. I've noticed this also. My MacBook goes from 3W of power usage up to 55W. Thankfully I haven't noticed this on my main pc desktop.

 yep I've noticed this too. Perhaps I'll toss in a toggle switch for the snow for you guys.

But, we run a lot of addons/javascript here, but I can tell you, you guys will LOVE XF2, it's extremely optimized when it comes to the latest HTML/CSS/JS standards, very big CPU usage difference in general when using XF2 vs XF1.

I love the snow and see no issues with my 2011 Macbook pro-----let it snow, let it snow

I made a few changes to the snow script, clear your cache and reload a page and see what kind of improvement it makes to CPU/GPU usage please.

It would SEEM to have helped, as when I open an incognito window in Chrome the gpu usage is significantly lower. However, despite clearing cache in Chrome when I am in a regular window the usage is the same. Even stranger, I can get gpu usage to drop to zero by scrolling to the end of a page. For example, when typing this the gpu usage is virtually nothing. If I slightly scroll up, even if the snow is not in view, it climbs back up to 20-30% again.

--- DOUBLEPOST MERGED ---

This is regular vs. incognito gpu usage.

Safari is better, but still has high gpu usage on this website.

I wish I could switch to safari, but the lack of extensions is a problem for me. I am tired of Chrome killing battery life in general, but I simply can't g et work done as efficiently in Safari.

I figured it out, it's not the snow. It's the charity auction timer. That's why it's not happening in incognito mode. When I use adblock to block the charity timer gpu usage drops to zero.

Okay, refresh the page, does the new countdown timer fix the issue?

For me, it's still the snow.
On my desktop PC, it uses around 10% of my GPU and the GPU clock goes up to maximum. On my Macbook Pro, it forces the discrete GPU to fire up. The new countdown timer seems to have reduced the power consumption to 35W from 55W for now. Turning on the profiler shows snow2019.js to be the primary CPU and GPU consumer.

Okay I see, Cloudflare didn't purge the js file before so the snow tweaks didn't even take effect before. Derp! My mistake.

Refresh the page/clear your cache now, and let me know how the performance is now.

Much better now. 5% GPU usage with a lower clock speed on my desktop PC.
On the Macbook, it dropped from 35W to 12W.

It doesn't follow my mouse anymore. And the snow doesnt stay on the groun. lol (Not a complaint)

Yeah, those were some of the things I tweaked to cause less resource usage. I may increase/re-enable them after we figure out what is spiking resource usage. Let me disable GPU acceleration and you can try again and let me know how it is... *done* try now please (may need to clear cache again).

Down to 8W on the MBP.
No GPU usage change was observed on the PC.

@xydrine I just wanted to say thank you for taking care of this so quickly, it is really impressive how responsive you were. My browsing experience is now significantly improved thanks to your fix, just in time for a long plane trip where I will spend the entire time silently thanking you since I will not have to pull out my power brick.

He gets a telepathic notification any time a bug report is submitted. Should it go unnoticed for more than 37 minutes, his heartbeat turns irregular and its all downhill from there.
