Hi!

I will be riding my motorcycle to Athens Georgia next Thursday.

My counter measures are :R3,waze and eyes !

I will be taking I 75 all the way to 441 and then north through some back roads and scenic roads, although I welcome the chance to see some back roads I realize that Waze will help will be minimal on these roads , or are they? do people use Waze around there?

what would your recommendation be on 441 ? any laser? KA?K? any towns I should mark on my map to be careful around?

Also any things I should be careful about in regards of the season on those roads?

The temperature seems to be high of 51, so pretty cold but doable with some double layers .

Thank you in advance.

Rob.

I'm not in Georgia, but I will say that, in my experience, Waze is used very little on "back roads". Interstates, US highways and state highways should provide ample Wazers. However, after sundown, Wazers have a tendency to disappear.

Based on what Georgians say, I 75 is overrun with Ka and Lidar. Watch out for I/O. @benzr travels Georgia extensively, living in the Atlanta area. Shoot him a PM and tell him I sent ya.

Do not trust Waze on the secondary roads in that area, not even on 441. Your R3 and eyes will serve as your best countermeasures (plus a rabbit). You may encounter either Ka or laser (from either local or state patrol).

Last year, @benzr ran across a county using K band. I don't know if it's in an area you'll be driving, but you may want to ask him about that as well.

Hey Rob,

If you don't mind me asking, exactly where are you coming from? How far North on I-75, there are some much better cycle roads to travel if time isn't an issue! If far enough north head over to Maryville, TN and take the Dragon's Tail (US129) over into NC then cut back country over to 441 to Athens. There will be some 4 lane rural divided highway and plenty of twisty 2 lanes (GA 17 and GA 105) between Robbinsville, NC (east end of Dragon) and US441 to Athens.

Wayes isn't much use on the mountain 2 lanes and isn't a save on Lidar either but your R3 will serve you well (make sure your K band is on because North Georgia County Sheriffs use a lot of 24.050 and 24.150 K band). GHP in mountains mainly on 33.8 with newer cars on 35.5 with Lidar mixed in.

The Tail of the Dragon is only 11 miles long, but you will love the 318 curves! The Tail of the Dragon/Cherohala 120 mile loop is my favorite spring ride!

EDIT: oh yeah forgot

I am coming from Miami, taking 441 almost at the Georgia state line,I have seen some videos of 441 and they seem like some boring 4 lane roads with random 2 ways here and there.

Lidar always scares me a bit and I have been wanting to get a ALP or similar for my motorcycle just the budget won't allow it.

I know Waze is mostly for metropolitan/interstates but I think 441 is transitted enough where it may be useful in parts.

I am considering going to tail of the dragon since it is only 2 hours north of Athens.

I will max out K band when in Georgia, thanks for the tips.

Although I am not planing to be zooming at 100 mph, a 160 HP motorcycle can jump from 55 to 80 in top gear with just a 1% of the throttle, so R3 is a most .

I was just wondering if there are any famous enforcement areas along the way.

@benzr gave me some great advice last night, but I am willing to listen to any more.

Also I am going to see my brother graduate from College from the University of Georgia, but of course it is a good excuse to take the bike out for a ride, my wife wants me to take my honda civic, but who would do something boring/comfortable like that!

Definitely pay attention to the K band. I commute Athens to Madison pretty much daily (441) and local departments/sherriffs like to use K band in addition to some pretty clever hiding spots. Haven't seen Lidar on that stretch in a long time. I'd recommend sticking to the PSL going through Madison as they LOVE bringing in revenue from through traffic on 441, especially in the 45mph zone there. Your R3 should serve you well though. As for Waze, it's just hit and miss as to whether it will be populated that day. I always mark things as I go. Definitely make the trip to the dragon, it's heaven on earth, and my go-to vacation destination a few times a year.

I know GSP used to run that stretch of 441 between Madison and Athens A LOT back years ago. There is a GSP barracks in Madison, if I remember right. I used to make it a point not to push my luck (much) when I did drive that stretch.

It's been a while but when I had my route through there, Athens used to have pretty heavy enforcement too - I guess all those inexperienced college kids made sure that the coffers were kept full.

I'm noticing that Habersham County (and GSP in Habersham County) is beefing up their traffic enforcement but they seem to be sticking to 365, which you'll be taking if you plan on staying on 441 north from Athens.

Pretty much expect I/O everywhere and relish the rare glimpse of C/O if you get opportunity.

You're correct about the GSP station in Madison. I do see them fairly frequently on that stretch of 441, but within the last 6 months it seems most of the time they're just commuting running C/O or nothing at all. Very different story on the holidays of course. I suppose it could depend on the vehicle as well with the GSP and likelihood of I/O.

ok I just came back from the trip, here is the cheese.
first on the way there.

In Florida:

multiple encounters on the turnpike north mostly marked on waze, I got a really close call on FHP instant on the turnpike past orlando abit, i was passing a van on the slow lane (it is a florida thing) and as i was about to pass him around a turn the r3 went full 5 bars on KA 34.7 , squeeze the front brake and backed off a bit, a trooper had hit the van and did not see me, was a 90 mph really close for comfort .had the van not been there I would had come back home with a souvenir .

Past the Georgia state lane on i75 no big deal, a few traps maybe one all the way up the Altanta by pass, bunch of back roads where i did not see any cops of any type.

had a good weekend with my brother and I left around 12 pm from athens

On the way back:

back through some back roads, 441 was one of them, no biggie, no cops or traps.

Then I hit I 75.mother of god... I see a report of a cop ahead on waze, so I slow down, I see a cop on the bridge, possibly targets me but R3 does not go off, ok, r3 is not great on laser, not even when targeted apparently.

Farther down another waze report, i see a cop pulled some one over, I assume that is the cop report but I am now next to a truck and I do not want to drive next to him so I accelerate to pass the truck almost got nailed by another shefiff shooting laser right next to the other cop, but i am next to him so he cant nail me, saved by luck.,

I little more and another trap reported, I see the sheriff on top of the over pass shooting laser down on drivers, no problem...

Then I hear the R3 warning for laser, I look up on the opossite side of the road on the over pass a sheriff shooting down laser on me, I look at the R3 and I am doing 84 mph, either he did not get my speed or he did not want to bother with a motorcycle, he does not go after me, I report him to waze.

Literally every over pass had cops shooting laser, I stop trying to driver over 80 mph , just slowed down to 70 on every warning or before an over pass.

I75 is saturated with sheriffs wanting to bring in revenue to their town by targeting passing motorists on I75, it is ridiculous, they can't even justify it as a safety thing.

crossed over to Florida and all is good, literally 8 hours of ridding my bike with not one speed trap on I95 .

Thanks for the help guys, my recommendation, do not speed on i75 in georgia , fuck that state and their cops.

They don't call that stretch "Laser Alley" for nothing.

Glad you made it home safely with points and self intact!!

you are not kidding! if i ever get a laser jammer i will drive to Georgia on I75 just to test it, it was ridiculous, trap after trap after trap, laser hits every 5 miles or less for about 200 miles, I felt like a deer in hunting season.

if anything it went to helped to show me how bad the R3 is on laser

--- DOUBLEPOST MERGED ---
