It's been a little while since the DR900 came out. Seems to be the only true 4K player from a trustworthy mfr. I can see so far. I would have thought more by now.

It is safe to tread into the DR900 pool yet? I see FW has been updated recently. Any other major issues?

My thoughts from this thread still stand: www.rdforum.org: My Blackvue Rant

Been having another issue with the wifi since writing that.

It's nice but frustrating. Doesn't feel like it should cost more than $300

Worth it, if yours doesn’t rattle. Had to exchange my 900 due to rattling noise, all is well now.

Do you want/need and can handle 4K?

Well, I don't NEED 4K. It's a "nice to have" which is why I started looking around again.

I don't need cloud functions. I don't intend to use wifi except for aiming and changing settings. Don't need the parking functions, either.

It would be NICE if we had more model choices! For now, it appears this is it in 4K land.

I also like the Blackvue tube shape for a slightly better mounting position in my car. Right now my A119-series camera is slightly offset from center to avoid shooting the rear view mirror. I've been able to mount Blackvue cameras with the lens centerline with the car.

I would say just as long as you live in a area that never gets above 74°F you are good to go.

Wow... so heat is an issue, huh?

I think I'll wait till there are more options!

Yes the camera will shut off if it gets too hot. Unfortunately, its set at a very unreasonable temperature (all things considered). I believe, however, that they were going to address this in a firmware update which may or may not have happened yet. Not 100% sure.

Overall I personally really like the camera. It's not perfect and no dashcam is, just like with radar detectors, so at the end of the day I guess it comes down to if you want its particular set of features and compromises.

Yeah it shoots 4K for the front camera, the parked recording is some of the best in the biz, the cloud stuff is the best around, and the tube shape is really nice. It's got a very rich featureset, you can have it record your GPS speed but not display it on screen if you'd like to see how big of a save you got without always having that embedded in the video. Not everyone needs all those features though which is totally understandable.

In terms of downsides, it can overheat in hot weather and a few people have reported a rattling sound. Mine rattles a little if I take it out of the mount and shake it, but I haven't noticed it otherwise. Oddly enough I do have a slight rattle in my convertible top release button that can get annoying so I don't like rattles either, but nothing from my dashcam. Oh, my iPhone can't use its data when connected to the dashcam's WiFi, so I just have it not autoconnect and that works fine.

It was well above 74 degrees here all summer and I only had an issue once when parked in direct sunlight so my experience has been different. The DR900S does have some overheating issues which are being worked on and have already been improved upon since the initial release, but it's not triggered every time it's comfortably warm outside. :p

Overall it does sound like the DR900S might be overkill for you @wirelessandy since you're not using most of the features. If you'd like better detail, why not go for the A119 or A119 Pro? I do notice a difference jumping even to 1440p over 1080p. Here's a quick screenshot from a video I'm about to release.

Do you plan on using parking mode? If not, it will not be a problem. I use mine strictly as a standalone camera (no cloud streaming and wifi is off) almost exclusively while driving. I have used parking mode a total of about 1-2 hours in 3-4 months. And even when I do use parking mode, wifi is still off. I haven't had any issues with heat.

Bump in resolution is my primary thing. Thankfully I'm not itching for a new dashcam.

You'd think we'd have more 4K dashcams by now.

My friend I love the dash cam. I love BlackVue and Blackboxmycar. However mine shuts down every time when parked in the sun with a temperature above 80°. Every time. Without exception. Now one could say don’t park in the sun but I live in Florida. That would be in impossible request. Of course I have not used my dash cam for the last two months because I am in a loaner car while my car is in the shop so perhaps they’ve come up with another firmware correction. I hope so because I really want this cam to work.

Of course you would never have an issue with heat if you don’t use it in parking. :)

However I want my dash cam to be used in parking mode. That’s 50% of the reason why I invested in a dash cam.
